What can you do in an accident when the other guy flees the scene?

Anyway, I may have done the wrong thing from a legal standpoint, but I'm pretty sure it was the simplest solution for us both and probably the right thing to do morally in the circumstances.

That's pretty much how foreigners should handle this situation in Thailand...stay away from hassles...just the price of being a foreigner here.

Totally agree, take the path of least and legal resistance.

For example, much is being made of faded number plates and police inactivity regarding this issue. The reason the police may only issue random warnings about getting the plates replaced and NOT a ticket is because it's a problem caused by the Transport Ministry's chosen plate manufacturer using rubbish paint.

I was pulled over on the Mitrapharp around 10 p.m. only to be advised by the cop that I should get my unreadable, faded plates replaced. I went to the local LTO and initiated that a couple of days later, getting brand new plates about three weeks later. I doubt the indolent locals are about to break a sweat and do that to solve what they see as someone else's problem.

Nope..

No way to get anything over Class 2 + money at one age and class 3 + money at another.. The age is dependant on the company and if you were insured with them over years..

10 years back I had a 1996 VW golf.. at 15 years old there was no insurer who would offer anything good. Same when I had a 'beach jeep'

Have a retro / classic merc 500 of mid 90s.. and you have to run around on base insurance even if the thing is worth 500 600k.. I have no idea how the multi million baht classics get covered, I have asked every insurer I spoke to and no one can refer me to a specialist for classics, I make the assumption one has to exist but I have asked.

I am insured by Axxa, have been since day one of my then new, now 12 year old, Vigo truck. Never a problem to renew, nor with the very few claims I have had - none of which are down to me, I might add. Indeed, their service has been above and beyond the cover.

They are faded due to a rubbish paint job at the plate factory.

Vehicle licence plates with faded characters can be sent in for repainting, free of charge until the end of this year, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) has announced.

The conditions required for a free repaint are that the plate letters must be "3กก to 4กฆ" -- issued in Bangkok and other provinces between Aug 1 and Dec 31 in 2014, DLT director-general Chirute Visalachitra said on Wednesday.

The colour of the paint on the plates issued during this time was found to have faded faster than expected, potentially the result of a mistake during the colour mixture process.

. I just didn't see any point in taking it further as he had no money and no documents and I wasn't going to get any compensation so why get a young guy in trouble, maybe cost him his job in these dark days, when I've got first class insurance and can claim? In the end, I had to pay 1,000 Baht excess on the insurance policy, and although the annual premium was supposed to go up to reflect the fact that I'd had an accident the next payment was actually quite a bit less than the one before the accident. Don't ask me. Anyway, I may have done the wrong thing from a legal standpoint, but I'm pretty sure it was the simplest solution for us both and probably the right thing to do morally in the circumstances.

And there you have the nub....it's ok, you ran into him but he ran the light. Had he done this to another person, injured or killed them? No insurance, maybe no license, maybe no redress to the injured party.

Ah, but it's ok, this is, after all, Thailand.

#1 - First Class Insurance

#2 - Stop worrying

Everybody knows many have no insurance, no money, they can not pay you.

So, Cover Your Ah Sole - in this as in all things

I had the same with a different insurer - at about 15 years they downgraded me to third party fire and theft. On the upside the premium was lowered by about two thirds.

I have been with the same insurer from new and they continue to give me First Class cover for a fifteen year old vehicle.

Since this is a "national sport" in Thailand, so "hit and run",
there is only one way to protect yourself from damage!
A 1Class fully comprehensive car insurance!

Maximum excess 5000.-THB

I do so for 30 years!

Only way to go

They did offer full insurance for the 11 year old car I bought, and I continued that insurance for 8 years until I sold the car.

Exactly this.

There's a good reason that it's called bail insurance in some quarters.

When I had an accident the police were going to fine the motorcyclist 400 Baht but decided that cuz he was poor they didn't. I had to claim off of my insurers.

Just a word of warning. If the changing of fluids ie oils have to be renewed for a repair they are not covered by your 1st class insurance. My Toyota dealer who did my repair wouldn't release my repaired car until I paid.

another reason not to drive a cage
