Thailand detects first case of Omicron variant

…….and when pointed out he chooses to post a pathetic “laughing emoji” Moronic indeed

As an American, I know a lot about how Americans have been behaving during Covid.  The behavior of many has been atrocious, as having the world's worst Covid record of any country indicates.  So I stand by my comment.  Let's see whether it emerges empirically whether this person who might have introduced Omicron to Thailand has been wearing masks and social distancing since he arrived.

Since he's an American, you have to seriously wonder whether he's been wearing masks and social-distancing.  I fear not.

  • He's not a doctor, he's a retired nursing teacher.  His videos are good, but he is not saying this pandemic is going to end.  Don't post misinformation.  It helps no one.

  • what part of "may well mean" don't you understand? Anyway, what's wrong with hope and optimism? The pandemic will end one day and for the past year and a half professionals have been saying the way it

I wouldn't say far from it. There have been studies showing a virus with many mutations tend to kill itself off.

Can you link to an appropriate study to confirm? Here is one that says this is not the case:

Reminder - it is not an inevitability that viruses mutate towards becoming less pathogenic and virulent. That idea (that viruses inevitably become more infectious but less virulent) has been circulating this entire pandemic but it should really be put to rest.

Dr. Fauci made a similarly positive observation today:

Though it’s too early to really make any definitive statements about it, thus far it does not look like there’s a great degree of severity to it,” Fauci said.

“Thus far, the signals are a bit encouraging. But we have really got to be careful before we make any determinations that it is less severe, or it really doesn’t cause any severe illness, comparable to Delta.

This is going to be bad news for those who think that Covid is a government hoax.

If Omicron turns out to be similar to the flu in lethality, then I think we can vaccinate our way out of this.

And others show exactly the opposite.  We just don't know yet.  We do know it's more transmissible as shown by the HUGE increase in cases in SA and the 400% increase in hospitalizations.  That's not good.

Viruses don't "kill themselves off". Like everything else in biology, they work on selective advantage. A virus that mutates to become more transmissible and less lethal will have an advantage over viruses that are less transmissible and cause their hosts to become very ill and die, because that is when they can no longer make make copies and infect other hosts.

That is why this virus may have a significant selective advantage over Delta. It seems to have a much higher rate of transmission (R0) while causing only mild symptoms so that it can make more copies while the host continues to move around and shed viruses which infect others.

This could permit Omicron to outcompete Delta and become the dominant strain – a strain with which we may be able to live with. But the drawback there is that with hundred of millions or billions of people walking around infected with mild or no symptoms, another mutation could occur which results in a variant that is lethal, transmissible and refractive to any natural immunity that we have.

From my limited understanding of virology, I believe viruses do not discriminate based on a potential host's nationality.

They do in Thailand… ????

Your broad stereotype of all U.S. citizens not wearing masks is way off base.  Sure we have a vocal MINORITY who are anti Vax and/or anti mask....but it is far from the majority.  With the only information of this person being an American citizen, you cannot extrapolate details.

Jeez.  This has been debunked here many times.  Go back and read the posts.

Nurse John Campbell does indeed produce some informative and entertaining YouTube videos; however, I would not place him in the category of epidemiology experts who are qualified to draw any conclusions regarding the fate of Omicron at this early stage. I don't think anybody will be able to do that for at least two or three weeks time.

Come on.  Don't deflect.  YouTube is a terrible source for information.  Especially for those who like conspiracy theories.

Wait…are you implying I can’t lose belly fat while sleeping like Dr. Oz promised?

Not so.
Even if 1/4 of Americans are idiots or brainwashed parroting ideologues,

that still leaves 3/4 who aren’t.

Don’t tar all with same brush.

It must be of concern as ‘our family doctor’ sent a LINE message to all his registered patients saying ‘it’s here’ and to be extra careful…….

We have booked two weeks in Kanchanaburi starting late next week…….all paid for…..

what he does is gather research from around the world from the experts and produces it for the benefit of us all - he does not claim to be and expert

Social distancing may take a whole new meaning with Omicron. Two people staying in a Hong Kong quarantine hotel in separate rooms contracted the Omicron variant. They never left their room (as per CCTV recordings), nor had in contact at anytime, so they suspect it happened during food deliveries.

Hmm. But you can find every expert on planet earth all over YouTube, right. So, I guess what you're saying is that you don't trust the so-called experts. One has to ask... then... who do you trust?

At last, the new virus is detected... Thailand want to be a part of the world and without Omicron it could not be.... Now they think about the next step... First end of year celebrations and than maybe again precaution measures.... we have to wait and see
