Thailand's health minister and DPM Anutin Chanvirakul has once again been bigging up his own efforts and that of Thailand in general when it comes to Omicron and the pandemic in general.

He told Sanook that strict entry requirements were in place. These were stricter than other countries.

He also said that the Thai people were following the DMHT recommendations to 90% - again much better than abroad.

This refers to things like mask wearing, hand washing and social distancing.

In addition he said that Thailand had more than enough locally produced medications at its hospitals and plentiful supplies of vaccine.

He was commenting after 104 cases of Omicron were found in Thailand.

Dr Suphakij Sirilak, director general of the Department of Medical Sciences said all of these were connected to people who had come back from or from abroad.

Anutin spoke of one such family who had been abroad then travelled between Kalasin, Udon then back to Bangkok. He said that everyone who was a close contact was being traced and said it was not a big deal.

He noted that initial findings of Thai medical services indicated that Omicron was faster spreading but no more virulent than Delta.

This mirrors information coming out of Europe so far, he noted, but that time will tell if in fact this is the case.

He anticipated no major changes to the protocols and regulations in place in Thailand.

That's odd, I still see Thai men at my office not washing their hands after going for a pee.

Just my luck, I guess. Seem to meet that other 10% all the time. Or maybe putting 3 drops of water on the tips of fingers with no soap counts as washing hands, and chin warming classifies as wearing a mask... As for social distancing, the moment I try to leave over a meter of space between me and the one in front of me, some donkey rear will overtake to fill the gap.

It doesn't matter where they came from, the fact there are over 100 identified cases, despite the attempts at borders, suggests that those attempts are futile.

It is here and it is likely going to spread like wildfire, though I am sure Anutin will still tell us what a wonderful job he is doing.

illegal border crossing is what brings mutations. They are opened, with thousands crossings every day in every direction.

the second, samut prakan, wave caused by burmese workers.

the third, english one, came to the second government house in thonglor with gamblers going for weekends to poipet casinos and khmer hostesses.

the forth, delta from india, through burmese refugees.

Wonder. What makes him so sure that he can stop the next wave. Before that he said "no problem" and Thailand still had its C19 waves. That the foreigners are to blame for the next wave, he put that little plant back in the heads of the Thais now. That the virus knows no borders and that it is a global problem, that all the measures are only a time delay, and that he is actually powerless, this man would never admit.

I cannot help but think of the rabbit of caerbannog in Monty Python and the Holy grail

The knights could not handle the rabbit without the holy hand grenade - Anutin's holy hand grenade appears to be the 'Holy Shut Everything' grenade

So the Knights of Nee it shall be.....Anutin must cross the bridge but first must answer the question of velocity of Omicron....

He sure seems very smart and has done a wonderful job with the pandemic.

He is makes PM, he could potentially become one of the greatest leaders in the world.

Uk had 100,000 cases in one day but Thailand total of about a 100 so far.

Clearly Anutin is using his magic powers to sustain a near Omicron virus immunity for Thailand, or could it just be that foolproof tried and not tested policy that sustains the the illusion?

his mouth

You can hardly blame Thailand for its knee jerk responses to the new Covid variant, as many countries around the world are also pretty much at a loss as what to do next other than shut borders, booster shots and isolation, and poor Thailand is between the rock and hard place, on one hand they're dying to get more tourists in and on the other is this, what to do with this Omicron thingy?...

He has done no worse than the UK, USA or Australia.

Good job thailand.

That it’s in your country and has come from abroad means your strict protocols have failed. They’re all in quarantine, I hear you say? Pffft. It’ll be everywhere. To quote Colonel Jessup, “You Can’t Handle The Truth!!”

Thailand will too soon. It will have the same level of colds among the population as anywhere. Test and they’ll find out.

Omicron turned me into a newt!

I got better!

Does this inept know, the foot in his gun's sight, is his own?

Major UK news outlets, across the political spectrum are reporting scientific studies confirming that Omicron seems to be less serious, less hospital usage, less ICU admissiom etc etc with the figure of less than one third as dangerous than Delta being touted..Perhaps Anutin is right but the problem is many expats want him to be wrong

Very clever Mr. Anutin, "Thai people following DMHT recommendations to 90% - far better than abroad" kind and calculating words to help pad future votes ( if there is votes ) on his PM ambitions.........

He would do well to keep a low profile. Comricron knows no borders and spreads extremely fast.

It's in over 100 countries now and he's going to control it? Omicron is so spreadable it's increasable like a girl I use to know.

I think what he really said is this:

Only Thailand is able to handle Omicron variant

...and then along came an editor
