NEW YORK (NNT) - The Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations has expressed support for a diplomatic solution regarding the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Permanent Representative Dr. Suriya Chindawongse made the remark during the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly. He said Thailand has been following developments in Ukraine with deep concerns, especially the escalation of tension threatening international peace and security.

Dr. Suriya said his delegation agrees with the Secretary-General’s approach. He said the method would see dialogue conducted in accordance with the Minsk agreements and other mechanisms, with a view to de-escalating the situation and finding a solution.

Turning to humanitarian concerns, he called on parties to refrain from the use of force and to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Since when has Thailand cared about former USSR countries?

Thank god for Thailand. A diplomatic solution !!

Pure genius. Why haven't they given this a try yet  !!??

Oh....they have for quite some time now.

Doh !

Probably as long as there has existed some  unheralded  if not discreet trade to mutual advantage.

"Former USSR" countries abound ! Therefore so does accumulative trade potential.

It doesn't at all of course...

However, when something as huge as this is happening on the global stage, those in Thailand in position of power start salivating at the potential optics of playing international ‘big-shots’... It just looks too good in the Thai Press and those who don’t know any better will think their leading hero’s have not just ‘controlled covid-19’ when the rest of the world couldn’t... they can also prevent warfare half way around the world....

What a brilliant idea. Nowbody ever thought about this  bla..bla...bla :clap2:.

Mr. Dr. S, can you deliver some details how to solve the war problem?  I'm afraid, NOT.

how about a brown envelope to Putin so he backs off, or a plastic bag on his head might persuade him.

That's is somewhat what Thailand did in the second world war. They were with the Japanese until it became clear that Japan would lose, then switched sides

Most thais won't even know this man.

Thailand has done better than most, however down to personal space and indirectedness.

Empty, but of course obligatory tat as with most countries. Putin can’t be talked to or reasoned with. The guy is inhuman and has no integrity, as Macron found out.

A resounding condemnation.  Very similar words to those of China. Hmmm.

just a time of time! none of the concerned parties will listen at that appeal

We will know what's what, when TAT says no more Russian visas or no more Ukraine visas.

Funny thing is that Thailand's main tourist targets are all the people causing problems in this. They want tourists from the aggressive Russia, and tourists from India and China who veto anything against Russia ! Pretty clear this is all just talk from thailand as action against them would hit them harder than covid !

Sorry guys. Thailand no longer possesses any moral authority. So, this is simply lip service, and means nothing to anyone.

So, how to contain the Russian madman? Any ideas?

Ultimately this isn't even about Ukraine or Russia, it's about China, it's about Russia and others like LOS positioning themselves for a world where China gradually and eventually becomes the hegemon. When that finally occurs Russia and others will have their own niche, and in the case of Russia that means they shouldn't have to put up with an armed proxy state of NATO on their very doorstep--which is what Putin kept saying but the weaklings in the west kept insisting he was really interested in something else. Keep it simple stupids.

And what has LOS or anyone else done about the civil war in Burma? It's fine with China, so the rest of the world will do nothing.

It’s pretty obvious after the UN Security Council meeting that it is a complete farce, they would have known beforehand that Russia were going to veto, but I guess another couple of days of 5 Star meals and accommodation trumps a war I guess.

  • Popular Post

Thank you. The whole world has been waiting for Thailand's response.

The Ukraine is an independent country that bothers no one. Then it gets invaded by Russia.  Probably because they are concerned Ukraine will become part of NATO.
As for the comments Thailand made regarding the issue.  I personally think that was a very nice gesture.
It’s not uncommon for governments to express concern about a crisis.  Even though they are not directly involved in it.

There need to be exceptions. Somehow Russia vetoing it's own expulsion lacks a bit of credibility. Kick them out. Barbarism should not be tolerated.

Dissent from within?

Thailand has been welcoming Russian tourist for years (God knows why !) and they have been trying to get them to come, despite Covid. Now they are slagging the Russian government. Thailand the hub of back stabbing and brown nosing.

Exactly. I bet if we were on, say, a Ugandan expat forum, we would be discussing what their government had to say.

Essentially, Thailand has through its silence sided with Russia.

Ukraine invasion: Singapore’s condemnation aside, rest of Asean’s ambivalence is ‘shocking’.

Singapore, Indonesia condemn Russia’s assault; Malaysia ‘sad’; Vietnam wants diplomacy; Philippines, Thailand focus on their nationals; Myanmar’s junta backs Putin.

Southeast Asia, which has long called for big nations to respect international law, now seems largely silent. Oil and the South China Sea partly explain why. But silence has a cost too.
