A day or so ago there was an obscure little news article informing that PTT, the blue chip oil and gas energy stock of Thailand, is allocating millions to the development of a telephone app to manage people queing for food. I spoke to my broker here and they confirmed the news was true (and have just announced PTT as a buy because of it).

The food supply crisis is going to get a lot more serious than you currently think. It is not just going to be about high and rising prices, it is going to be about there is just no food to buy.

Governments will keep this issue as quiet as possible for obvious reasons (insert links to current news stories of food riots in Sri Lanka).

As an investment theme, lithium is done for, and most tech for that matter, in the short term. No one is going to want to buy an electric car or fluff about on social media when they have to dig up the back yard to make space to plant potatoes.

Last week I bought myself a large sea fishing boat here in Thailand. I bought it because I love fishing and diving but being able to more effectively fish for food was also at the back of my mind.

What are you doing to ensure that the integrity of the food supply for your family?

And what are your suggestions for food integrity stock plays on the SET, DOW and ASX.  This will be a global crisis.

We get everything from village market everything animals and veg and fruit is grown loyally so not much in difference of price or shortage because distribution costs are minimal and not much of factor.

If the price of food around the world rockets AND it can be exported easily AND Thailand is dumb enough to export all its food, then we might be in trouble.........otherwise we are never going to be short of food in Thailand.

I bought myself a 250 Rai farm.
I love Mangos and Papayas.
That's the reason.

I think Thailand produces more food than the people here consume, so prices might rise, but there won't be food shortages.

Most people have enough fat reserves to survive a few months on reduced food intake anyway, some people years.

It is funny that you guys are posting off hand jokes and nonsense.  You need to flag this post.  In the near future you will realise that this is a real and very important issue.  It may well be the most significant catalyst for China moving on Taiwan also.

Really? I think you might want to check on that. Sure, there's seasonal produce, but over all there's plenty of fruits and vegetables coming from China. There's also this misconception that meat sold at farmers markets is coming from small artisan family farms when in reality most of it comes from industrial producers like Saha Farms, Betagro, etc. The local vendors buy pork by the side, and then butcher it themselves. I don't think things are quite as "local" as you imagine.

Anybody who follows the news should be aware that food insecurity is a growing concern worldwide. Most foreigners probably imagine that if things ever got bad they could just hop on a plane and head home until a crisis passes, but that may not necessarily be possible if the SHTF. I maintain about a three month supply of food and drinking water as a precautionary measure.

I'm very surprised as well Adumbration. OK, in a food crisis, Mr. Farang Deep Pockets might be able to outbid the starving peasants for a while, but what if there was no food at all? Farang-y boy is going to be at the back of the queue, big time. As far as Thailand being a big food producer, true enough, but most of that is rice, corn, cassava and production which could easily be severely crimped in a major drought.

45Kg sack of rice in the cupboard for a start.

Then a few swords and machetes to fight off the Zombies.

Don't care if the grid goes, I make my own electricity.

Plus plenty of cannabis plants so you don't really care about what's happening.

 

And a very last resort, I can eat the Buffalo in the field behind my house.

Ridiculous.

This is a very good food producing country available for people here there will not be a shortage of food.

Ground water is severely depleted in many areas. Extreme weather is making droughts more frequent and severe. You can't grow [expletive deleted] without water.

Ground is a bit soggy up here in Chiang Mai, klong behind my house is full to the brim.

Don't eat meat, so that is of no concern......and pretty sure all our fruit and veg is local......I see an endless stream of Toyota Vigos driving passed loaded with produce from the farms surrounding us and then being sold from mats on the floor of the village 'high' street.......doubt China gets a look in.

So, its never gong to get any rain again? Well I never knew that! 

 

Anyway, most farms around us have very deep boreholes. And Thais are expert foragers.

Some of them have never been to a supermarket.

from what i read in a few other topics there will be lots of dog meat to eat.

We started an organic farm over 10 years ago and we grow most of our own veggies

and fruits.

We have 2 fish tanks,chickens and a deep well and some solar panels.

I think we can manage.

Judging by the size of a lot of the expats I see, a food shortage could be a good thing...

Cannot sleep with worry , what if all the chickens get chicken flu ,

the pigs get swine fever, the cattle foot and mouth , the rice crop

fails, the rain stops falling and there's no fruit and veg, only one

thing to do find out where Adumbration lives as he is sure to have

plenty of fish , but would he share it ?

 

What if all the banks go belly up and I have no cash to buy anything,

if there's anything to buy. would Gold be accepted , nobody going to

accept Bitcoin ,don't have any anyway.

I notice that a number of the posters pooh-poohing concerns about food security live in the northern provinces which do enjoy a climate more conducive to fruit and vegetable production, perhaps contributing to the perception of endless food abundance in Thailand.

 

Suffice it to say that there are many areas in Thailand where agriculture is under more stress than in the North.

 

I'm not some prepper proselytizer, but I do think some of you are underestimating your potential vulnerability were a genuine food crisis to emerge here.
