Daily News Thai Caption: Make 'em squeal

Top investigator Pol Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakpan did not mince his words when saying he intended to see a full investigation at the Immigration Bureau from non-commissioned classes to the generals.

He is investigating links in the IB ranks to the granting of favors to Chinese nationals looking to live and do business in Thailand.

He was speaking at RTP HQ in Bangkok yesterday after a three hour session with his chief, General Damrong Kittipraphat.

He said the investigation has progressed but they were still looking into the transfer of money.

Some crime could probably be traced abroad but there was as yet no evidence of that in the inquiry.

He called on Chuwit Kamolwisit to present more evidence if he has it intimating thanks for previous help received, reported Daily News.

Surachate was asked to comment on implied criticism of his capabilities by Chuwit brushing away the firebrand's concerns.

He stressed that it was important that everyone worked together and that evidence was at the heart of the investigation.

At the moment 27 IB police are in the frame for having committed criminal offences.

Among these are former classmates of the charismatic cop named Big Joke.

  • Only 27?  You are not looking hard enough.  I would think the number of corrupt IO's run into the hundreds.

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Some just don't know when not to interfere beyond the call.

I suspect that he really does......easier guess to suggest that this is a rhetorical publicity and image stunt.

Part of the show.

by far the biggest corrupt practice involving IO I have observed over years is when people use agents to circumvent the financial requirements for 12 month extensions, pretty much every person I know uses an agent and does not meet the financial requirements "in Thailand" for either bank balance or income, bribes are paid to circumvent the rules

Quite, although agents do business with IO's, this is not what 'Big Joke' is after?

He is after Chinese gangsters and illegal businesses, like casinos?

In another thread on AN......."Recent raids and investigations in Thailand have highlighted potential links between Chinese gangsters and Thai local officials"

This is not a few thousand baht, or hundreds of thousands, they are talking about Billions of baht?

'Big Joke' is not investigating agents who facilitate retirement visa extensions. He is investigating evidence that has been presented to him by Chuwit Kamolwisit and other much more serious visa infractions by wealthy chinese/thai businesses to facilitate Thai ID cards and visa extensions and illegal businesses amongst other corrupt practices

That’s a very dangerous statement to make since your identity can be easily established.

not so when he does  the ext. himself, but only when @smedly  would be using one of the agent services I guess

How much do you think bribes for extensions bring in nation wide a year? Hopefully he will get round to the corrupt offices raking in millions via agents, and the fraudsters having thier extension cancelled.

How? I doubt Smedly is a real name and that he is using a VPN and could even be posting away from his home.

When he has done with rooting out the bad Chinese will he move onto the bad Indians, Russians, Brits, Aussies, Koreans, etc?

From today's news it seems that Japanese gangsters are next on his hit list. Yakuza beware!

Let’s just wait and see how it all turns out I mean at the wrong they still can’t find the Red Bull kid. He’ll be back as soon as all his crimes are over due to statute of limitations. TIT.

I really don't know, but whatever the amount, its a drop in the ocean compared to what the Chinese businessman/gangsters are turning over?

Top Investigator role will be hard to fill!

Who is next? Maybe he could start the new year investigating the RTP, they are as dirty as any establishment if news reports are correct.

What defines a poor person more.... an inability to find 800k baht to tie  up and pretty much  be unable to use for a long term, or one who can't afford to pay 15000 baht each year for something?

Agreed. The agent's skivvy bowls in with a dozen passports and the IOs drop everything for them. Same with driving permits. It'd be hard to find one, apart from BJ, who isn't on the take.

You are being generous.

I would have said thousands.

Just wish he would take a look at my iO. Even filing a 90 day report requires an "unofficial fee".
