A Swedish tourist was brutally attacked by a gang of young men after he tried to stop them from harassing a waitress at a karaoke bar in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, on Friday. The gang also stole the victim’s gold necklace before throwing him into a canal.

Yesterday, police arrested three men of Thai Yai ethnicity at a construction workers camp in Doi Saket district and detained them at Sam Kamphaeng Police Station under suspicion of assault. Police charged three suspects – 22 year old Sa Ong, 25 year old Daeng and 25 year old Angkham.

The suspects admitted to assaulting the Swedish man but denied stealing his gold necklace. They said their alleged harassment of the waitress was “just a joke.”

A relative of the victim’s girlfriend posted photos of the Swedish man’s injuries on Facebook with the caption…

My mother and her boyfriend travelled from Sweden for a trip to Thailand. On Friday (07/04/23) it was my mother’s boyfriend’s birthday. We arranged a birthday party for him at home with the family and then we went to a bar near our home in Sam Khamphaeng district, Chiang Mai province.

“Near the time we were going to leave, my mother’s Swedish boyfriend went to the toilet where he saw a group of men harassing a woman and trying to pull her into the bathroom. He went in to help and as he was making his way back to the table, the men followed him and attacked him.

  • Farang really should steer clear of these sorts of places, most of those rural karaoke bars are nothing more than shanty brothels with the roughest types of clientele, as was the case here with Burmes

They have probably already sold the necklace.

And if they lost face over "just a joke" that makes their vile behavior even more pathetic.

Let's hope the police deal with this properly instead of handing out a "joke" of a punishment.

Farang really should steer clear of these sorts of places, most of those rural karaoke bars are nothing more than shanty brothels with the roughest types of clientele, as was the case here with Burmese laborers dragging a girl into the toilet to pack rape her. You'd think the Swede's Thai GF would know better than to take everyone there for a birthday party.

Beating someone and throwing them in a canal sounds like attempted murder. Throw the book at these spineless vermin.

They sleep as dogs and they attack as dogs ... in packs.

Good on the Swedish bloke, and the cops, that arrested these thugs quickly.

Getting involved in Thailand is always dangerous.

I was told when I first moved to Thailand, to never, ever enter a Karaoke joint without a group of Thai men. Applies even more if the place is rural. And you cannot just approach a group of young men, and defend a woman, unless you are armed, a 6th degree sensei, prepared to die, be locked up, or get seriously hurt. It is just basic survival instinct. Few like to see a women being hassled, but he had absolutely no idea of the circumstances, and this was 80 levels beyond dumb and naive.

Moral of this story never get involved with a Thai Fracas you will come out the other side defeated.

That's debatable.

These Thai punks & thugs have zero to lose, while most foreigners have everything to lose and nothing to gain by getting involved.

⚠️WARNING⚠️: Steer clear of all Thai males of all ages at all times. No good deed goes unpunished rings especially true here in Thailand.

Probably drunk and/or high on yaba, so they were on another planet and had no idea what they were doing. The Swedish guy can count himself lucky they didn’t pull a knife or a gun on him, and that he’s still alive to tell the tale.
Hopefully these cowards (who said that harassing the waitress ‘was just a joke’, yeah right) will end up in jail for quite some time.

So you would stand by and allow a possible bashing/rape/murder take place... mmm looks like this gang of thugs aren't the only non-men.

I must be a lucky one as I have entered many karaoke bars both in Thailand and China. Yes, even a handful or so in Chiang Mai. And the only issue I had was being overcharged a few times.

I had to smile when it said they threw him in the canal, must be my black humour.

They are using up the bad air that I breathe…

very bothersome is the attack on the girl and if nothing else an assault charge if not worse…this sounded much more than just harassment

hang-‘em and hang-’em high

Kudos to him for assisting a young girl in trouble but he got off very lucky indeed.

Usual Thai odds at least 3 onto 1, the whole nation are the biggest cowards on the planet. Not a real man amongst them

30 years here. Not drama, reality. It's Thai life and oftentimes it's brutal...or worse. But up to you, bud.

Best of luck! ????

They can always claim "Thai people don't do that", as the perpetrators were Tai Yai = Shan = originally 'from Myanmar'...

Hard call to say not to intervene when you see a woman being dragged into a toilet with a group of men.  Instinct says she was likely going to be gang raped and bashed. Who knows what badness they were going to inflict. Hard call to just walk away from that. Even if she may be a karaoke hooker.  She doesn't deserve that.

Sure, intervening can have dire consequences.  All I can say is the Swedish man is a real man with balls.  Definitely not a coward.  Bravery medal for him.

The cowards of course are the Thai men who fight in packs, like wild dogs.  Primitive behaviour.  Evil mindsets.

Pretty good start point IMO.....  add the exceptions later.
