How do Thais stay slim?

Featured Replies

How are there so many slim, petite, slender Thais?

Especially compared to westerners. I don't get it.

-They don't fear carbs.

-They don't avoid sugar.

-Most of their food is stir fried in bad oil.

- They don't do keto or any other fad diet.

They don't prioritize whole grains or greens.

- I don't think they count calories or out any effort into staying slim

-They don't have a fitness/exercise culture.

How do they do it? It is just good genes?

They pretty much live off lots of white rice, sugar, and oil with some meat and fruit, while never exercising.

Any insights?

I know a lot of thais who drink beer daily, eat like pigs and are stick thin.

Are you referring to the younger age groups?

Because when I was in my teens, twenty's and most of my thirty's I could have eaten everything you mention by the bucket load and never put on an ounce of weight.

They probably have naturally very fast metabolisms.

Indeed they are.

Screening Thaifriendly on a weekly basis for potential victims I notice 60kg is now the new 50kg.

Look at Thai meals, usually very small portions. Also no puddings, no cakes, no sweets and (until recently) no fast food.

They eat badly --but--they eat  little.

I Remember taking a Thai girl to a Sunday roast --her asking , "do we eat all this today"  -Yes and Pudding after.

My wife eats 2 - 3 times the volume of food I eat.. Day and night, wake up for a mama noodles late evening just before bed, instant food the second she wakes up, 5 plus 'meals' a day.. A bowl of noodles every trip out of the house, a couple of dishes grabbed as a snack between meals..  Yet shes 45kg and fits the same jeans she did 20 years ago in her 20s (she just found a pair recently, not an exaggeration).

She is active and hard working for house work and garden etc, shes 'busy' but the sheer volume of poor quality food she consumes is truly crazy. Shes eating now as I type this !!

I often think it may be to do with chilli and metabolism.

hmm.. I eat Thai potions.. possibly 2 times a day.. Compared to her 5 plus, a portion every 2 hours or so all through the day..

They spoon sugar onto and into everything.. Sure its not 'dessert' but 2 heaped tablespoons on top of the phad see eow, balanced out with vinegar and fish sauce, is still 'in' the dish..

Do Thais stay slim???

Really?

Too many topics here where many members moaning about how ladies here have gained weight (compared to the 80's and 90's)

Sorry to OP, you got this totally wrong.

Edit: also Thai Press has written about the obesity problem, multiple times.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity_in_Thailand

Obesity in Thailand has been flagged as a major source of health concern,[1] with 32% of the population identifying as overweight and 9% obese.[2] With reference to 2016 data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Thailand has one of the highest incidence of overweight citizens in the South East Asian region, second to only Malaysia.[2] The Thai National Health Examination Surveys (NHES) found that obesity in Thailand more than doubled during the period 1991-2014.[3] This spike in obesity levels has been largely attributed to increased access to junk food,[4] and unhealthy switches from active to sedentary lifestyles.[5] These factors are closely linked to economic growth in the country.[5]

I think it depends where you are in Thailand.

In the tourist areas there are a lot of slim, healthy looking people.

Where I live in rural Kanchanaburi, there is a very large percentage of the under 40 group who are obese, or even morbidly obese.

Young children of obese parents are invariably overweight as well.

IMO the issue is cheap fatty & fried foods, and sweet 'milky' drinks and soft drinks.

soon to be 73 in a few years. then  83

then, well, you get the picture.

mrs. smith is a right plumper these days.

she wasn't when I met her though...

That's a generalisation as none of the Thai girls I fed did that.

If they stay slim ( lots don't ) it's because they ain't gluttons and they are more active than western equivalent.

The motor bike did its part. Unless they are at the mall, they do not do much walking anymore.

Problem for the young generation is snacking after school, when they head to 7 11 or the food cart for unhealthy food.

Their mothers probably didn't have the money to do so or had to work after school.

Lots also ride m'bikes to school instead of walking.

I don't get how bread and potatoes are worse than white rice?

Thais very much have a sweet tooth. Have you ever tried one of their coffees or teas?

Okay, I agree with you on smaller portions probably.

Unless, they work in a field or construct site, they definitely do not move more.

Where I come people actually walk as a mode of transportation. Thais just hop on a motorcycle

go down my local 7/11 early morning and see the kids buying the junk, like a load of little puddings on their way to school,

I think he meant back in the kitchen. They add sugar to offset the salty fish sauce

Come on!

On my way to work this morning, I lost count of how many women I saw with 28 inch waists (and a sugary drink in hand) and I didn't see very many men with big guts either. A lot of slender chaps my age.

Compare it to the West.

just the other day I was out walking. I did about 20km in an afternoon.

Went for a massage after it and the woman asked why am I so sweaty? I said I have been out walking for the last 4 hours. She said 'Thai people dont like to walk'.

So yeah, it would seem that walking is something thais do not partake in with any degree of vigor.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen a Thai do anything with vigor.
