The latest report from We Are Social reveals the top 20 most-visited websites by Thais, showing a notable presence of adult content sites in the rankings.

 

Despite the wide range of content available online, it appears that websites with adult material continue to garner significant traffic in Thailand. The recent findings by We Are Social, covering the period from December 2022 to November 2023, sparked discussions among netizens and professionals alike, highlighting the enduring popularity of such websites among Thai Internet users.

 

Renowned IT influencer and presenter Phongsuk Hiranyapruek, better known as “Nui” to his followers, took to his personal Facebook page to comment on the issue. He pointed out that the search for explicit content is not only common but also prominently featured in the country’s top internet search queries.

 

“This report goes global… ‘Thailand’s Internet Usage Report’ I haven’t read other countries’ reports, but in Thailand, the term ‘X’ is ranked as the 15th top Google search. We have porn sites in the top 10 and two in the top 20… Who isn’t ashamed? I am! Whether you read it to feel embarrassed together or to study behavioural patterns, it’s all worth knowing, folks. We can apply this to our work, understanding these behavioural details.”

 

Phongsuk’s statement underscores a broader concern regarding the content that dominates online searches in Thailand. His remark, “Who isn’t ashamed? I am!” reflects a sense of personal and perhaps national embarrassment over the prominence of adult content in online searches, suggesting that while the presence of such material is not new, it remains a sensitive topic.

X is a single letter. I don't believe anybody is putting that term into Google hoping to encounter a festival of debauchery-laden websites.

 

To put the "renowned IT influencer"'s mind at ease I just put X into Google myself and the first page of results were almost exclusively from a single social media website, along with a couple of results about the BMW x Series. So even if people are using the term to search for porn, they're likely being disappointed by the results...

I suppose that's why they'll deny entry at immigration if you posted a negative comment on Twitter/X about long queues at their check point in the airport, but porn, shame? not a problem, come on in! Yeah, covering up shameful government actions is par for the course. They would be ashamed of it, but refuse to admit it exists, and stamp it out when it might see the light of day, that way there's no shame to be had.

VPN's are the way to go for a lot of websites that the Thai government finds objectionable.  From X-rated sites to criticizing the government, VPN's feel a void.

Living in a residential , upper middle class area, I cannot stop noticing that within a diameter of maybe 2 km there are no less than 1 dozen curtain hotels that do thriving business daily, these hotels that foreigners rarely know about and where one can drive his or her car into a port, the employee pulls a curtain in front of it, hands out condoms und unlocks the door to the dimly lit room , often a jacuzzi and the TV with porn movies .....well, the quality is rather rabbit style, Pornhub is better, but then again the attention is more on the......jacuzzi of course. Years ago I remember, there were even motif

hotels with rooms like Snowwhite , Star Wars, Dungeons and Dragons, Little Red Riding Hood (hope there are no Texas Chain Saw Massacre rooms) and the like.............of course all this was not for Thais, they would not know what to do in all these places 😜 and would shudder at the TV program😃 and call for a monk to let the bad spirits out. It is time for an asteroid to eliminate the dinosaurs , the pope and the talibum would be proud of you guys (yes, almost always guys with almost always mia nois from some school or uni).

Isn't the term 'adult content' a little ambiguous...I always thought that it had a range of meanings, from the bloodthirsty gory to nudity. I would distinguish between these and pornographic. Why didn't they just say porn websites if that's what they meant...it isn't against the law the say 'pornographic' ....or is it?
