the Thai's are cowards. not only can most can not drive, but they will not stop a red lights for most pedestrians. they will not stop to render assistance.  hate them.

Wow, that's a lot of hate..

And you certainly do not honour the victim by spreading that here.

Careless driving and reluctance to render assistance after accidents, is not exclusively a Thai phenomenon. I've seen that in Asian, African, South American and in some Western countries too.

That Thais will 'not stop to render assistance' is simply not true. I find the Thais to be among the most caring and helpful people I've ever encountered.

That doesn't mean, though, that I don't see enormous room for improvement in the road culture here.

I remember years ago an accident in Phuket town where a minivan ran the red light and a friend of mine who drove like a lunatic slammed straight in to the side of the van, The van driver had no insurance just coming back from a visa run full of passengers, the police were trying to blame my friend.

Known Zoe for years, what an absolute lovely woman that didnt deserve this, another act of "im above the law, i do what i want" attitude by another brainless psychopath.. rest in peace Zoe..

As William Munny (Clint Eastwood) said in "Unforgiven"

"Deserve's got nothing to do with it".

Cars run red lights in every country.  What's newsworthy is the blatant negligence (corruption?) of the investigators.  Perhaps there will be enough pressure to open this up and have the driver charged.

Poor woman, The driver should do the right thing and turn himself in, and the police hang their heads in shame

That is one of the problems here, they have no shame. R.I.P. to another innocent victim who we all know will never get justice.

The culture is different. Drivers often flee back to their own village, lie low for a couple of weeks, then turn themself in when the heat dies down.

It seems to be acceptable, and people who remain on the scene and do what we see as being the "right thing" are usually punished more severely.

We're not in Kansas, or England or Canada anymore. The rule book is different here.

How could the police test a hit and run driver for alcohol and/or drugs?

The refusal to look at nearby cctv footage is a strange one. It would be interesting to know the thinking of BIB on that one.

Traffic light cctv not working…..par for the course.

"Tourist Authority of Thailand"  take note,  ... Police  not interested if /when a foreigner dies in Phuket,  all they want to do is make money from traffic stops,  I hope this makes International news ....

RIP Zoe,

Gone too young for the stupid actions of a speeding driver.

The Police obviously not interested. No cameras and declining to take footage from local store owners, no check on drink-driving, nothing......... It stinks.

Will we have the outrage at the death of an innocent woman or the involvement of the interior minister asking questions about policing in Phuket?

We had it for weeks when a woman was kicked in the back by a foreigner, heads rolled all over the place. A trivial incident that made international news and drew the nation's ire, carefully choreographed by the media to whip up anti foreigner hysteria.

Or is this another road death not newsworthy enough, as it involves terrible driving on the part of Thais as usual.

What’s required is some mobile phone footage filmed by a concerned citizen, followed by some moral outrage by outraged netizens. They police this country these days because without that the police don’t care.

Seems to me as if the van and driver is too well known. So, he can get away with the kill😳

I have referenced many times in this forum the red light jumping and specifically in Kamala. It is outrageous ... nobody respects the lights and absolutely nothing is ever done. Its not a daily event ... its every single light change. This is not an accident ... it was a deliberate run through a red light. Tragic. And it will happen again.

The same thing happened to my wife in Greece almost 13 years ago, just three months short of her 65th Birthday. Drunk driver with his foot in plaster. The difference then was that the driver owned up to been at fault. These types of incidents show that how easily life can be wiped out by carelessness and stupidity.

More and more you get a sense of racism.

I know, it's not since today or yesterday, it is deeply rooted.

Mai Pen Rai, it's just an old farang, not much we can do about it now, (must have been the thoughts in the

In my opinion, the governor of Phuket need to to sackall the commanding officers of that station and make sure personally that all cameras and other safety equipments are in working order and that someone will make sure that it will stay in working order...

Unfortunately, that would involve diverting money away from his personal ventures, and that would never do!

My sympathy goes out to this ladies family as I know exactly how it feels to lose someone like this.

How long do you stay in los?

Maybe after 25 years you'll change your mind.

They stressed the need for traffic-control measures, such as speed humps and proper signage, to control speeding vehicles and prevent further catastrophic accidents. They asserted that the cost of implementing these safety measures was insignificant in comparison to preserving human life.

Police are worse than useless, won't help. The populace would rather speed and risk killing people. 100% chance this happens again.

Did any reporter ask the police why they refuse to even look at the CCTV that is available? You know, like reporters are supposed to do.

Reading the story it said the van she was driving was hit by a other vehicle 😳

I take it she was. A pedestrian who was subject to a hit and run

Incident

The amount of  accidents and deaths involved here in  Thailand does not seen to be a priority to the police authorities

More action is needed

RIP to the lady

Agree with you here on both counts.

I think the source of the story are local expats, and think there will soon be an update.

Tragic. Hope there are consequences for the driver.
But she is not entirely faultless. Having been here so long, she knows not to trust traffic lights, esp when there is little traffic (otherwise how could the van have been speeding?) and everyone knows that people drive like crazy.

Funny you should say that, as it is exactly 25 years since I first came to Thailand. Been living here the last 15.

Our experiences clearly differ then. Have never lived on Phuket, though. Visited it a couple of times, years ago. Didn't like it then, and from everything I've heard since, I don't think I would like it now either..

Regular Thai drivers are bad enough. Those commuter drivers are insane even by Thai standards..

One could only hope, that this will hit international news just as hard, as when the swiss guy gently kicked the female doctor away from "his" stairs!

A country with such a negligent police force, deserves to be avoided by many tourists.

And let the wider world know how they behave and what they prioritise.

Instead of policemen running around like headless chickens to shut down bloggers on YouTube, based in Thailand, and threatening them with blacklist and deportation, for expressing their views.

Remember, your life is cheap in this part of the world.
