I pay 90 percent in cash. For big items, I'll use a card but it hardly seems worth it for small purchases and I'm not interested in fiddling with my mobile phone and QR codes at the register.

  • What the f-k is wrong with you? Why would I have 10k baht in wallet for ladyboys of other sexual services? Are you basing that on your own preferences? I was thinking, when you are out and maybe

CASH is king! Cash is ay least something you can use in case the "lines" break down, which they sometime do even here in Norway where I am now! Then you have to leave your groceries and leave and wait for every thing get on line again!! Norway even made it law for all businesses to accept cash or they will be fined! Imagine Thailand and how many times internet and electricity break down during bad weather and floods!! Cashless is brainless! Stupidity and ignorance, and maybe some lust for power over each and every one of you!!

In my case, always in Cash.

Exception:

Cost of passport renewal at my country's embassy in BKK.

This way, risks of skimming will be minimal.

In recent years, I have heard of quite a few cases where customers' money is stolen  from the account liked to the online payment systems.

When I book my airline ticket, I am willing to pay B300- fee to the kind local travel agent.

As the cost of financial safety and peace of my mind...

Pettie benefits from non-cash payment don't interest me.

Saw an article saying Thailand could be cashless by 2028. Don't believe this will happen so soon, but just interested in knowing how most people here pay for things nowadays. Shopping, taxis, apartment etc. Do you use debit cards, Promptpay etc? I personally still believe cash is king and we should always have options.

Cash

100% cash in Thailand. The Thai wife is a little more sophisticated and does a lot of online payments and the occasional debit card in-store.

Just try using a credit/debit card in any shop in Thailand.  "No like, No want"  is the usual response, followed by over-charging to cover the car company's fee.

There's no shortage of businesses that will happily accept payment by card and there is no merchants fee for accepting a debit card.

The only really annoying place I know is starbugs. Even for one coffee, no cash. Annoying. Another reason to avoid that place.

Not all Starbucks have that policy, maybe you should patronise one of the hundreds that does accept cash?

At the moment I don't have any payment service on my phone....I don't even have banking information, the reason being that it seems to me that all banking fraud is linked to mobile apps. Sop none of that for me. If I have to make a payment in a store, over the phone etc I use AMEX where I can and VISA (baht account) where they don't.

Debit card occasionally, otherwise CASH.  For me, none of this app payment stupidity.

My choice - no further comment from me.

Weekly shop and online I scan, otherwise cash.

Need smaller notes? Withdraw from ATM in multiples of 400 or 900 baht. Alternatively, withdraw several amounts of 900 baht. (Obviously from Thai bank account).

Normally I avoid that place. But sometimes I want an espresso and there is no other shop.

So, I go there, order it, take my cash out, and then they tell me they don't want cash.

And in two or three months I forgot about that and try again.

In Bangkok city no cash seems to be their usual policy.

In BKK and Hua Hin most of the business & merchants including market and street shops/food are cashless since covid.

Personally i pay via qr code or scan. Just ask if they have qr or scan?

Surprising most do qr or scan  EXCEPT: taxi, motorbike, some massage shops, toktok and small back soi vendors

I pay direct from my thai bank and prompt pay. Noticed last week a lady pay the bus fare too, but I usually have some coin.

Cashless is very handy too as most banks allow you to make notes/classify items bought to identify what your buying like food, supplies, desk & sofa from homepro etc.

Why would you pay 685 USD to be able to pay, when you can have cash for a lot less?

Because. The benefits of the card are higher value than the yearly fee

Only thing I still pay for in cash is short-time.

You made my day 🤣

Debit card in 7-11?? Well maybe the odd one or two.

Always cash , Worgeordie  A.K.A. Johnny Cash , don't have a phone

or want one, places like Makro ,Bic C , always have the amount of

reckoned up ,have money ready to nearest amount ,hand money

over get change ,pisses me off when someone in front of my ,pulls

their phone out when told the amount , fiddles about with it ,then

pays , defiantly takes longer .

99 % of people just pay what the cashier tells them ,they don't know

value of goods their asked to pay for ,over the years the times I have

been overcharged , from 20 B to 545 B , Makro is the worse ,when

they ring up same item twice , BUT , I have never been undercharged

for anything....

regards worgeordie

No, cash only is not the normal policy.

Cash is all I ever use.

Tourists with QR codes maybe not but When I see a Frang at Topps market I steer clear.
Them what pay with their dirty  bills.

It is faster to line up behind a Thai woman who appears to be shopping for her family, always  with a card. Faster.

Not because it is necessarily, but they know what they are doing.

The farnag often comes back (bellowing, claiming to be overcharged) These are the Chiang Beer vest drunk at 11 AM types, easily avoided.

A mix of cash, credit card and QR. Whatever is most convenient or gives benefit.

Maybe so in Thailand, but here in Siem Reap all the bills (notes) I use are clean ones from my bank's ATM's.

Capital One MasterCard from the USA. No fees...including no foreign transaction fee. Good exchange rate, 30 day grace period to pay + 1.5% unlimited cash back on all purchases. If the merchant charges a percentage 2-3%, then cash or Bangkok Bank Debit Card...or bank app transfer.

Why do I need to do that?

This is why..

I always carry a few thousand baht in cash with me, even though I normally pay my bills in supermarkets by scanning QR codes.

However. Twice this week, Makro and Tops, those QR codes would not work, (This payee cannot currently receive payment. Or something like that), and I had to pay in cash.

Also this week I did some haggling for cash and got over 40% reduction in price. I knew they were asking far too much (THB110), as I currently had the same things on order on Lazada for THB40. Cash is still king in my book.

I don't know how true this is, but my GF told me there are always problems paying by QR codes at the end of the month in Makro.

My wife’s nagging me not bother with Debit card just scan everything even when at the atm.
Isn’t that more faff logging in, accessing the scan mode, logging out every time.

99.5% PromptPay/TrueMoney (~ 49.5%), foreign credit cards (~50%) (always pay in THB, no local fees, no issues, my credit cards do not charge any foreign transaction fees).

rarely pay in cash, maybe motorbike taxis.
