Wise: Transfer delayed - never experienced this before

Featured Replies

This early morning , after 03:00 AM, I made a transfer from Germany to Thailand with Wise. It said that my money would be sent 10:00 and arrive in my Bangkok Bank account at 14:13 today.

At 14:15 I checked my balance, but no transfer had arrived. Upon checking my emails, I saw an email from Wise which had arrived at 10:50 saying: Your transfer of EUR to THB will arrive later than expected. A lot of people are using Wise at the moment, so it's taking us longer to process transfers. Your transfer should now arrive on 21 January at 07 07 UTC.

When I checked on my Wise account it says Your money is being processed. Wednesday, 21 January at 10:00 we pay out your THB. Wednesday, 21 January at 14:13 you receive your THB.

This has never ever happened to me before.

Are there any other Wise users who have experienced this? It is not a problem for me at this very moment, But I fear that this could repeat itself again in the future or that Wise could become insolvent. This has happened to me before with a company I used, named Xendpay.

The thing I hate about this company is their overly personal way of communication and the lies they happily tell to excuse their incompetence...."A lot of people are using Wise at the moment", total BS.

I dumped Wise a few months' ago after they threatened to close my account unless I could prove to their satisfaction my right to reside in Thailand, which, in practice, I could only do with a non-existent Thai driving licence in my case! This was in addition to requests for proof of my ID and address, which I was able to satisfy with my passport and latest UK bank statement.

Honestly, it makes perfect sense to me that such a delay can happen from time to time, if one considers how Wise manage their currency transfers.

Based on my understanding, for most countries (but not Thailand) , for a Wise transaction of funds between country-A (currency-A) and country-B (currency-B), Wise keeps an account in both countries with lots of money in the country's respective currencies. Nominally when one instructs Wise to transfer money from A to B, Wise does not actually do an international transfer. Instead Wise takes one's money given in country-A, and Wise keeps that money in country-A (currency-A) , and Wise takes the money from the Wise bank account in country-B (in currency-B) and sends that money to the person who wanted the transfer.

Now if the currency only was transferred in one direction, (ie from A to B), eventually Wise would run out of money in their bank account in Country-B's currency-B.

But Wise nominally plan (hope) there are currency transfers in both directions. This keeps both Country-A and Country-B accounts topped up with enough money to handle transactions.

BUT if there are a large amount of transactions in one direction, and NOT in the other direction, eventually Country-B's currency-B Wise account will run out of money. So Wise then has to go to a bank, and do a massive Swift transfer of funds, where Wise negotiate a very very low transfer rate with the bank. And hence Wise top up the Country-B's currency-B.

Now Thailand? Thailand IMHO presents a problem for Wise, as money transfers out of Thailand are relatively smaller than those going in to Thailand. Further Wise has not a system setup to transfer money out of Thailand, so the Wise bank account in Thailand is NEVER topped up by money from Thailand.

Instead, this means the Wise bank account of Thai baht, is constantly running low on money. And it means Wise has to keep doing Swift transfers of money from Europe (?) or from elsewhere, into Thailand, and buying Thai baht, to replenish the Wise Thai bank account(s).

It happens from time to time, that one wants Wise to transfer money from (say Australia or say from Europe) to Thailand. But the Wise Thai baht account is close to zero. So Wise accept one's money (in Australia or Europe), but in the meantime Wise quickly negotiate with some bank a LARGE Swift transfer of funds to Thailand to the Wise Thailand account(s). But Swift transfers can take days, so if one is unlucky, one gets caught in the situation when Wise is topping up their Thai baht account. And that will mean delays.

Hopefully I typed this such as it can be understood. At least that is my understanding as to how this works.

I made a transfer from Germany to my Bangkok Bank account with Wise on Tuesday afternoon and the money arrived in my account on Wednesday 2pm Thai time. So everything as usual.

In the past I transfered EUR from WISE account to Bangkok Bank and it was always next day about 2 PM.

Over many years I had three "incidents" where it took longer.

WISE is not a garantueed instant transfer.

SWIFT transfers are quite unpredictable.

Western Union might garantuee instant transfer but for a price.

Since November I do my monthly transfer to Kasikorn and always received same minute.

Last one on 21st this month.

But I still won't wait until last 2/3 days of the month with the transfer.

Or until they threaten you with account closure, like they did me. Personally I would be very wary of relying on their services for monthly ฿40k or ฿65k IMM transfers.

Why would they ask for proof of your "right to reside in Thailand"?

My Wise account is registered in the UK and the funds are transferred to a Thai bank account that's in my name.

Been with them maybe three years now. No issues apart from a period last year when the transfers would arrive the following day. I recall that was possibly due to changes in intermediary banks or their procedures. More recently, if I set up a transfer before 8 am Thai time, it's in my Thai account between 2 pm and 3 pm, same day or roughly 6 hours later.

I did a transfer on 22nd. I transferred the money at 0730 Thai time and it arrived at 1402 same day, It was from Australia to my Bangkok bank and coded as FTT. If it is a public holiday in Thailand or if Wise send the money after 1000 it will arrive the next day. Also weekends it will not go in your account until the first working day. This if you wanted it coded as foreign transfer in Bangkok bank.

No. Thailand is still peer to peer, the money stays in the country of origin, but instead of Wise having a Thai bank account or transferring money in, it uses its partners in Thailand currently Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank and Tranglo who match reciprocal Baht transfers to the currency Wise has. If you look at any Wise transfer confirmation pdf at the bottom under paid out from it names the banking partner who made the payment on behalf of Wise and the transaction reference number. It still faces the problem of more demand for Baht the currency they have to trade.

Because not everyone has a Wise account registered in the UK like you? For that you need to have an address in the UK. Some UK expats might only have an address in Thailand?

Pretty much do all transfers to kbank and stopped transferring to bbl anymore, nothing like having a few grand of usd swirling around out there in digital land for a few days.

I opened my UK Wise account while here in Thailand. Did Revolut at the same time. I think I may have used a vpn just in case, but I don't recall exactly, but I do have a UK address and that's the same address my UK bank has.

My understanding was that you couldn't open a Wise account if you weren't resident in one of their designated approved countries. Is Thailand one of those now? Or is this request for "proof of right to reside in Thailand" due to the fact it's still not an approved country?

I would assume that sending Wise an upload of your long-stay entitlement such as a Non-O and the extensions thereof, be it married or retired, would satisfy their query. No need to close the account unless one likes to harrumph a bit.

I opened my Wise account in 2017 in Thailand.

First transfer in Jan 2018.

Opened account living in Thailand and provide proof of residence here. Have no address in any home country.

Proof of residence by some unrelated letter from pension office.

As written, in 8 years very few incidents/delays.

Likewise 2018, using my Thai address and Singapore bank statement as proof of Thai address. Subsequently in 2020 I needed to transfer monies out of the UK, so furnished them with my UK address and bank details too, so I'm double registered.

Transferred funds to my Kbank account 1 hour ago.

Australian Commbank account, used Pay ID.

Arrived in less than 5 seconds.

My previous transfer 4 days ago and that transfer arrive in under 5 seconds.

Both transfers under ฿50,000

Please see various posts (in particular mine) in the following threads:

https://aseannow.com/topic/1374328-proof-of-address-for-wise/

https://aseannow.com/topic/1374688-beware-if-you-use-wise-for-your-monthly-imm-transfers/

It would appear that either I have been alone on Asean Now in being required to prove my (non-existent as a non-immigrant) Thai residency to Wise, or those who have received similar requests have been able to do so on the basis of their Thai driving licences (of one of which I am not the proud possessor).

I have, however, come across a Reddit thread initiated by someone who seemingly received from Wise a similar request to mine. Google "Issue wth Wise residency verification in Thailand", and it should be the first result which appears.

Yes a UK expat can open Wise in Thailand. They just need to prove their address, so someone with only a Thai address having no address back home in the UK could show Wise a current bank statement with the address on it for example. T&C can differ, for example the expat with a Thai address cannot get a Wise Debit card as things stand at the moment.

I had to wait a couple of hours over this weekend. I didn't need the funds, so I wasn't in a bind.

Not only that, but I love Wise as a rule; great exchange rates and lightning-fast transfers are the norm.

Late receipt of funds into a Thai bank is not always the sender at fault. In most, but not all cases, it is the Thai bank withholding the funds.

I transferred money from Revolut to Kasikorn on Tuesday at 09:10. Revolut stated within minutes it had been received by Kasikorn. However, it was not transferred into my account until Wednesday at 12:15pm. This has happened on one or two occasions with Kasikorn and with KrungThai.

I can't speak for Wise as I have never used them, but did have similar instances with Nationwide Building Society UK in the past.

Yes and it seems to be the only bank that the transfers are instant is green.

There have been loads of posts on a Wise Facebook page about delayed transfers using Wise but it appears to it only affects transfers to Bangkok Bank. My transfers to Krungsri from my U.K. Bank takes seconds but upto a day depending on what time I transfer to Bangkok Bank. Early morning transfer it usually the same day at 2.13pm at but at a later time it’s the day after at 2.13pm, before it was seconds. After after all the reports about scam bank accounts about BB it now takes longer, as it has been reported agents can’t deal BB either in Pattaya.

My last xfer, 2 weeks ago, too 7 days from the US to here. I saw on my US bank the funds were removed the same business day. Then 7 days to get to Wise. I am looking for other options now.

I find from Australia if I do it weekdays, during business hours of both Australia and Thailand it’s instant. Revolut the same. The one time I did it on a weekend took nearly 24 hours.

And WISE give a reduced exchange rate at weekends (-0.2bht/GBP).

Best to wait for a weekday.

All my transfers until now from Revolut, has gone in seconds to Krungsri Bank. Less than 50k each. Never an issue. Did my last one on Sunday. Took 10 seconds.

Okay, you're saying WISE is incompetent.

I use it too.

What do you recommend for transfers from Germany to Thailand?
