no deterrent just get some spare hoses next time you are in, or try another car manufacturer to see if their hose fits your car maybe theirs will not be so delectable to the rats.

I read online that the hoses are made with soya bean to enable them to be bio-degradable.

Had exactly the same issue when the air con stopped !

Honda literally dismantled the front end and caught the little git !

Cost me just 500 baht.

There is a spray you can get on lazada, spray it around the wheel arches and under the bonnet, inner wings etc. Never had the problem repeat.

A water a pepper spray might also do the trick, I know in the US it worked for me in the garden with Squirrels but it washed away every time I watered the garden, You will need something that sticks to it and stays there. For long storage of a car I have read mothballs (Naphthalene) but I don't know if it might also keep you away from the car LOL

. , Google "mix to keep rats away from car " a lot of information out there . I read some place that rats don't like mint, I once had a mint shampoo that I hated because it made my eyes burn Perhaps if you spread some of that it might help, if it does not, at the very least your rats will not have bad breath. LOL

Thanks for all your advice.

I ordered a spray on Lazada last night. Hopefully, that will do the trick. I'm also going to look out for some peppermint essential oil to dilute and spray around the engine bay.

We also had an issue with Roland.

I made some pet-proof bait stations with "rat food" which reduced the issue significantly.

We now seem to have been adopted by a cat (despite having two cat-hating dogs) who no doubt is feasting on any remaining rodents.

This is the rat food.

And this is where we put it.

Yes, and not only the hoses are soy based, also the plastics

Better to get rid of the rat. Go to any hardware shop & purchase a rat trap (catch it live)\

Semi fry 2 bits of bacon. Save the fat. , attach to swinging part of trap & then use the fat rubbing it from under the bait to outside the trap. You have now solved your problem.

Incidently, I had a big buggar in my bar so did the above, & set it behind the cashier while open.

20 minutes done. They know dangerous but cannot resist

My windscreen washers stopped working. The motor was still running but no water!

I took the truck to the MG garage. They lifted the bonnet and found that something had eaten the rubber hose between the washer motor and the jets.

RATS!!

They replaced the missing section of hose FOC. Thanks MG.

3 weeks later, the same thing happened.

I went online and found that it's a common problem. Modern rubbers and plastics are now made partly from soya bean.

Rats like soya bean....yum yum.

Has anyone else had a rat problem? Can you recommend a deterrent?

Friends in Mae Hong Son had a serious rat problem in house and car; then they bought a couple of cats. The rats quickly took the hint and have vanished. They previously tried electronic devices which came with dramatic illustrations of rats, cockroaches et al fleeing the premises in droves. But in reality none of them took any notice. Anyway they now have no rats. But several cats.

Don't mess about getting it out of there. Last March I started my Hilux after sitting unused for only three days. It was running roughly and the dash looked like the light display on the starship enterprise...reds, yellows, and orange icon illuminated everywhere. <deleted>/s ate some electrical wiring. All had to be replaced. Cost my insurance company just over 30k baht and me about 1,300 baht. First claim on car insurance in forty years.

In my Fortuner before I got two squirrels, they were trapped in the fan, after a wile it started to smell, and can't find where it comes from.

Later I found them in the filter behind the glove box.

Toyota told me there are special items to block the way for this kind of animals.

But I sold my car.

I sprayed normal Insect Repellent Spray in the corners around the engine and never saw there a rat again.

Because it is a little bit oily, the smell of the spray stay there long time.

We've had this problem intermittently, despite having nine dogs - unfortunately the chief ratter sleeps indoors. I now routinely keep the car bonnet (hood) open overnight, leave a few mothballs scattered around the engine compartment and use a rat repellant spray every few days. Not such a problem now (except when I forget!).

I'm thinking that one could use a spray that has had some 'blue' coolant mixed into it (bittering agent will give big bad taste)   Also wonder if some could also be mixed into the Reservoir too? - for a nasty shock when next time the rat bites right though...

Our Lab / Retriever cross was a professional rat catcher up until she went to Doggie heaven but many years ago we had a cat and she performed a great rodent reduction duty as well. The rat deterrent sprays look good but I like the sticky rat catcher pads because you can hear them scream when they get stuck. But hey, that's just a personal preference.

You gotta fix that rat that's what you gotta do gotta fix that rat.

Put a baited spring trap in da engine compartment to fix that rat. ( bait it with a little peanut butter or cheese , anything strong smelling )

If you are going to the bother of baiting a trap, could I suggest the following: get a metal trap, bait it and then lift it with something like a pair of tongs or something so that your hands do not touch the cage/trap or bait after you have set it. You place the contraption over an open flame - either an open fire or a gas hob with a couple of gas rings burning. This will burn off your scent and make it more likely that you will catch said rat. Then using the tongs you place the trap into the engine cavity of your vehicle and hope for the best.

That said - don't be surprised if you find that the culprit is not a rat but a pet, like a dog.

I'm pretty sure it's not a pet, because we don't have any pets. There are definitely rats and squirrels around, so my money's on them being the culprits.

it would not be for rats.

Could have been worse.  I had to pull a ground up possum out of my home A/C.  We used to find mice and rats ground up in the cars' blower rotors back when I was a grease monkey.  Usually preceded by customers asking "what is that smell?"
