Pattaya to become the next Miami and on a par with Singapore and Dubai, says mayor

I wonder how long would it take to fix a kilometre of 3rd Road in Miami, Dubai or Singapore? Pattaya has been at it for over 18 months, and after each rainfall they must start again... No further comment

I don't live in Thailand now and wasn't even planning to come back before cv as such I don't really come to this site much. But I am thinking of making it my second go-to place for a laugh to take the boredom during lockdown after cat videos .

Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Khunplume has revealed ambitious plans to transform the resort into a truly world class tourist destination, on a par with the likes of Dubai, Singapore and Miami.

Speaking to Sophon Cable TV on Tuesday, Mr Sonthaya said that the project to develop the resort (dubbed Neo Pattaya) will play an important role in the Eastern Economic Corridor, which aims to spur business, investment and development throughout the eastern seaboard.

When tourism finally resumes, more quality tourists, generating even more income will visit the resort, Mr Sonthaya predicted.

Eventually, Pattaya will become not only a better place for tourists, but will be much improved for people living and working in the city.

The mayor cited Singapore, Dubai and Miami as examples for Pattaya to follow in its bid to become a world class resort, which eventually would include an exciting nightlife, lots of activities for families and a diverse economy.

The mayor added that Old Town Naklua, Koh Larn, Bali Hai Pier, Khao Thap Phraya, Pattaya Beach Walk and Jomtien Beach have all been earmarked for redevelopment, in addition to the upgrades planned for Walking Street.

The news comes as local officials and business leaders, including the mayor himself, were told Pattaya must end its reliance on foreign tourism.

Even the supposed 5 star hotels can't compete with other upmarket destinations.    Forget it, it cannot happen, unless you knock the whole place down and start again.

5 star hotels were a bit thin on the ground 20 years ago, if it wasn't for the knocking down that started years ago there wouldn't be what there is now.

Soi Bukhao used to be a dirt track with bamboo huts and then the bulldozers came and flattened huge area for the LK Metropole and Soi LK. My mate had a bar across the road from the police station, then they bulldozed from beach road to second road for Central and the Hilton. Pattaya has come a long way in recent years, can't remember the last time I heard of all the toilets being locked up due to a water shortage.

I was stationed near Dubai in 1970, that was a sewer, they never had tourists so nobody ever knew how bad it was. I am not disputing the claim may be a bit ambitious, at the end of day it is all about money but there is no reason why the improving position shouldn't continue. There is an old saying about Rome.

As things improve, the  reputation will improve, natural progression. Despite what some may think, current opinion does have a shelf life.

Whatever Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Khunplume is smoking, he needs to distribute it to all the citizens in Pattaya.

I'm guessing he’s never been to

Miami, Singapore or Dubai and probably Bangkok either otherwise he would never make such an absurd statement.

And just in case you’re reading this post,

the photo posted in this article is not Miami. It’s the Miami Cruise Terminal. Miami Beach is nothing but High Rises. Try watching a 1980’s version of Miami Vice and you’ll get a better idea of the layout of the area

Mr Mayor, have you been out in the last year?

Do you know how big Miami, Dubai and Singapore are?

If you look up(outside) you will see lots of pies and pigs.

Far, far too late for that.  They should have planned that 35 years ago, when they just took the cash and sod the future.  It has been 'planned' atrociously and is a nightmare to walk around, drive around, or get around using what laughingly  passes for public transport.  The services are appallingly bad and the place floods regularly.  The sea is dirty and polluted, as is the atmosphere. Even the supposed 5 star hotels can't compete with other upmarket destinations.    Forget it, it cannot happen, unless you knock the whole place down and start again.

Public transport is the best thing about the place. What a shame though the greedy politicians stole all the billions of tourist baht instead of reinvesting in infrastructure. Last time I was in Miami it didn't flood to knee deep after 20 mins of rain

Never been to Dubai but Singapore is at the bottom of my list.

Way over priced concrete jungle with no natural character.  Found the people stuck up and rude, especially the women.

No worries it never will, but would hate to see this place ever go that direction.

Awesome comment by the mayor and always a priceless source of entertainment.

Anyways i still do believe Pattaya has huge potential IF the government finally legalizes gambling.

Casinos will be a perfect fit and just like in Singapore the whole gambling indusrty can be regulated to fleece only foreigners and protect locals from losing all their money.

Totally agree.
The whole resort is crying out for some big casinos and once they arrice, the tax revenues alone (if they ever reach the right place that is) would constitute a complete change of a VERY tired face.
Sex, gambling & drinking - the perfect trifecta for Pattaya!

RE - Pattaya to become the next Dubai, says mayor

*  That one should be easy to achieve - transform all former pubs, beer bars and go-go bars into Halal shops and Halal restaurants topped with alcohol bans and hijab injunctions - mission completed - next ...

Who works in Pattaya except those directly involved in the tourism industry or building the infrastructure for same ?

I said "work" not retired !!!

All joking aside it’s a very delusional thing to say, but in some regards it’s also a bit lacking in confidence.

-Singapore is a borefest, it’s max 2-3 days of doing the zoo, Universal Studios and a couple of other touristy things.

-You can’t swim in Singapore and not expect to get coated in oil and end up with a skin reaction. The water is filthy

-Singapore is a major financial, business and travel hub - that’s why most people go there, not for holidays (and maybe casinos)

-Pattaya has probably got more going for it - better hotels, better spa’s, better water parks, more attractions, better shopping, better nightlife

I haven’t been to Dubai but imagine that is similar to Singapore, but more expensive.

I’m sure there are lots of things that could be developed in Pattaya to make it better but trying to emulate other cities is rubbish.

Tax revenues will go straight to the so called Elite and Military, and that's bloody obvious to most.
