Public health minister confirms Sinovac vaccines to arrive on Wednesday

The first lot of Sinovac vaccine from China will arrive in Bangkok on Wednesday at 10am at Suvarnabhumi international airport, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Sunday.

To confirm that the COVID-19 vaccine will definitely arrive on schedule, the minister showed a three and a half minute video clip to the media, showing Chinese workers moving stacks of boxes, containing the vaccine, from a warehouse and loading them onto a container to be flown to Thailand by Thai Airways International.

The consignment carries a message, reading:  “Hello Sinovac Vaccines.  Have a safe flight.  See you on Wednesday!” More doses will arrive through to April, amounting to two million doses.

I hope Thailand plans on vaccinating more than 3.3% of its population....

2 million Sinovac vaccines is a better number than the 150,000 AstraZeneca vaccines ordered.

Importantly, better information beyond the ‘Brazil report’ on the efficacy of the Sinovac vaccine is also important, while better than nothing, 50% is not yet good enough.

Hopefully the promised 26 million vaccines promised by May by the AstraZeneca-Siam Bioscience bilateral production will come through, things have gone very quiet on that front.

The Sinovac vaccine is a lot more important than many of us have given credit for.

Vaccines in wealthy countries are useless if the virus elsewhere is not controlled and antigenic drift results in such evolution of the virus that existing vaccines have limited efficacy.

The Sinovac vaccine fills a gap, it can be distributed more readily, doesn’t need refrigeration.

Thailand is apparently also developing its own vaccine.

Interesting times, ultimately times where the whole world needs to come together to ensure that primarily those in high risk groups are vaccinated, as soon as they are, we can surely all get back to normal.

2 million Sinovac vaccines

2 million Sinovac doses vaccinate 1 million people, so 1/70 = 1.43% of the population.

I think until ALL nations start publishing infections AFTER vaccination by each maker then its pot luck, though I would trust western vaccines more - and if the chinese data is anything like their covid infection data most information will be withheld

Anutin has learnt that he needs proof when he says something now.

It would also be good to see a video clip of the AZ vaccine being manufactured at the Siam Bioscience labs, who have refused the media any access. Wonder why?

the one made by Pfizer — needs to be kept extremely cold: minus 70 degrees Celsius, which is colder than winter in Antarctica!  Moderna has said that its vaccine needs to be frozen too, but  only at -20 Celsius more like a regular freezer.

But these Sinovac vaccines from China ?? No problem...throw on a pallet & saran wrap leave in sun on the dock then float over to Thailand no problemo ????

Thai government sitting on its hands on this issue with their ‘mai bpen arai, we have COVID-19 under control’ attitude. .... clowns.

Astra Zenica took 6 months to formulate, create, test and manufacture a vaccine from scratch.

Even with the recipe, Siam Bioscience can't manufacture the vaccine within 8 months of signing the agreement.

Good choice AZ.

All the endless non-stop talk talk talk about such a tiny amount of vaccine.  Finally maybe possibly perhaps arriving, but way too late and too little.

Just another example of Thailand kissing China's .... Thailand seems hell bent on doing what it can to please China and form some sort of misguided bond with the hope that if enough Chinese tourist come to Thailand, and soon, it will sort out their decimated tourist industry which of course it will not...

It actually took 10 months for the University of Oxford to develop the AZ vaccine, not 6. And just how quickly could YOU build, or adapt a production plant to produce millions of doses per month?

The sinovac vaccine reduces the severity of covid 19 . That makes the 50 percent effective rate look far more sense . Added with the cost per vaccine ,  the ease of transport and availability all must make  sinovak  to be a wise choice of vaccine for developing countries like Thailand.

2 million doses by end of April... the country is holding on by threads and that's the best they can do?

Then what?

Plan du jour?

Odds Prayuth, Prawit or Anutin are first up?

The huge consignment of 200,000 doses will arrive on Wednesday for sure .. 100%

The banners have been made, all the balloons are being blown up as we speak, and the Brass Band is practicing, so they are in perfect time with the Dancing Girls.

Any guesses as to why more urgency is not being attached to this vaccination drive?

And other than the storage issues, why go with the vaccine with one of the lowest efficacy rates? Strictly cost?

But the vaccin will only be given to people above 18y=53 million. There are probably many ongoing studies regarding children so the recommendations might change.

At least one thing that does give cause for optimism is that, in the 'Western' countries that are now well in to the vax campaign (eg US, UK, Israel), within 3 or 4 weeks of the campaign starting the numbers of new infections start to fall dramatically. And will presumably continue to fall, which is exactly what we all need.

It was a misunderstanding.

I agree entirely with apetryxx above. The most serious threat is that a vaccine which does not have total efficacy will allow the virus to become immune to the vaccine thereby making it totally useless.

I, for one, will continue to observe the restrictions and wait for the Astrozenica version as this has been properly tested.

Where has it been shown that a lower efficacy vaccine will allow the virus to become immune?

Please share any further details on this comment.

Its a positive start the sooner the Thai population starts to  get vaccinated

The sooner the Tourist industry can open up and welcome back the Foreign Tourist plus remove the Quarantine measures as well

as said the general and his crew are sitting on their hands with fingers crossed, they are going to need much more than that
