People aged 60 or over in Thailand now have the option of having the Chinese-made Sinovac, instead of just AstraZeneca’s vaccine, in a sudden change of policy by the National Communicable Disease Committee (NCDC).

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said today, after a meeting of the NCDC, that the committee had received an updated report on the efficacy and safety of Sinovac vaccine and agreed that it could be given to people over 60.

He said inoculation with Sinovac for the over 60s will begin after clearance of a legal issue by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

I definitely would prefer Astra Zeneca over this Chinese placebo with its negligible efficiency and unknowns side effects.

It’s unlikely when you actually show up to be vaccinated that there will be a choice of vaccines on hand.

That Thailand is betting on the SInovac, with an efficiency, based on Brazil, at around 50%, is telling. Backing the wrong horse. in a life or death situation.

Now he's been done it's suddenly OK for the over 60s.

Even at 50% it's much better than nothing, but >80% is much, much better than nothing.

Even with 1% efficiency, Sinovac would be trusted by the Thais.

This Chinese Vaccine again in the news ?

I suspect this has something to do with the WHO reviewing Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines.

Yup, but isn’t there an issue that Sinovac might also restrict travel options later. ?

I think many of us looking to have a vaccine , despite the obvious health reasons, are also thinking about travel to our home countries for leisure or emergency purposes .

Chinese duff one has got to be a last resort?

At the moment it's all they got to offer... so try to <deleted> people that it's now safe for the over 60's [unless you're a government official who can decline the offer] as approved by a Thai agency.

And the governor of WHO is in bed with China so I have less confidence in that report than Sinovac itself.

About the same odds as with the government then?

About 1% efficiency but in power.

That's all it's good for.

Please do not discuss / hint / allude to or anything else, in any way, shape or form ownership of Siam Bioscience. We all know by now (and if we don't Google is our friend).

This is a big blow to those who have made appointments. Sinovac has not been tested on over 60s and results of stage 3 trials have not been published anyway. Next the corrupt Thai FDA will announce in is good for new born babies too.

it is obvious they are covering up for an impending failure of Siam Biosciences to produce the AZ on time.

I thought Prayut [not Thailand] was betting on Siam Bioscience producing the AZ vaccine?

He has only purchased a minimal supply of Sinovac to apese the press until the Thai lab comes on-stream.

Should that programme falter in any way the PM will be "you-know-where without a paddle".

Sinovac for over 60 yo? That is strange, as it is not yet approved for over 60 yo here in China.

Sinopharm has been approved by WHO. Sinovac awaiting approval.

Hopefully, further down the line, there will a vaccine choice option on the booking system, as in some other countries. As you might expect, there will be a longer wait for your appointment if your choose a popular vaccine ????

Not the common Thais.  The ones I know don't want the chinese one.
