I have a friend , whose wife was just popping out to 7-11 down the road, thought she did not need to wear a helmet as was only 5 mins away, and fate struck, well a pick up truck, she

had head injuries ,and 2 years later she is still been taken care of in a care home, which is costing my friend a lot of money every month, so you should always wear a helmet, EVEN if you are just popping out around the corner,

Spot on.  If I see ferlung riding around with no hat on I just feel I couldn't care if they have an accident regardless who is at fault. Most likely the country where they come from the law would say wear a hat and likely the driving is so much better there.

Looking around i see them all wear a mask,yes i know,almost funny.

Yep like the policeman who pulled over someone on a bike as he was not wearing a mask.

Oh and no crash hat but that didn't matter.

What chance to the general public have to save them from themselves.

Everyone can make assessments of the scoot or motorbike journey where they live it's not rocket science.

Lack of training and skills in using machines is what is lacking IMHO.

It's interesting to see those on motorbikes with no helmet yet wearing the face diaper.

That's risk assessment for you. ....

I don't know how to ride a motorcycle. But I do track cars and have completed a bunch of performance driving courses. Would consider myself a pretty skilled driver, but I still wear a seat belt every time I'm in a vehicle.

It's a low effort habit that protects against asymmetric downside risk. Would think putting on a motorcycle helmet is the same situation - and it can look cool too!

Rode for decades....Had everything from Gold Wings, Ducatis, and others.....

I won't ride a bike here....Just a casual observation of riders & vehicle drivers persuaded me it isn't worth the risk....My buddies that have big bikes all seem to have a fatal ambivalence towards it....

My uni daughter has a Click - however, when home on visits she, along with my wife or daughter #2 jump on for a local store run without helmets before I can catch them....

Given that I've lost one daughter (26) to a car crash, I just shudder....

Wear your fkng helmets boys.... Won't keep you from possibly sawing off a leg, shoulder, or arm should you go down = but you'll likely survive....

Only use seat belt in my truck going into the city I don't have a seat belt on my bike, knocking about in my truck locally I don't wear a seat belt, my truck is not performance related.

As they say "Up to you"  that's what I like about where I live in Thailand.

I always wear my seat belt... there really is no reason not it, its not an inconvenience at all.

I understand ‘why’ people would want to ride without a helmet, its just more pleasant. But, I can’t understand why people do ride without a helmet (if that makes any sense).

As very bare minimum ALL times - Helmet, gloves, trainers (even when popping 700m down the road to the 7-11).

I may or may not wear the full face helmet.

IF hitting a major road..... ALWAYS - Full Face Helmet, Gloves (with skid guard), Motorcycle boots (causal sort), riding pants (with knee and hip impact projection)...

If not going too far I don’t use the jacket.

If going further than 20mins away, I’ll also use the Jacket with back protection.

I like riding without the gear, but also, I don’t like riding without the gear !!!

What is this obsession of people worrying about what others are doing.

6 months ago I was forced off the road and took a spill doing only about 15 kph. My head hit the tarmac but luckily the helmet took the blow at the back. Received cuts and scrapes.

3 months ago my bike went from under me doing about the same speed, 15 kph. Helmet slammed against the concrete road breaking off the peak and the visor on one side. Received a broken collar bone. 101k+ in medical bills.

On both occasions the helmet probably saved me 15-20k each time in fees for head scans.

This is a common argument but it lacks a bigger thinking approach....

If a motorcycle pulls out in front of someone who is driving 30kmh, the motorcyclist comes off and smashes their head... the outcome is...

- Very lucky, a minor bump

- Head injury, very lucky full recovery after hospital treatment.

- Severe damage - metal disability

- Death

Consequences:

- Medical bills are costly (either privately, or the state)

- A family could loose an earner

- Drivers guilt of hurting / killing someone

If that motorcyclist was wearing a helmet in the chances of a traumatic brain injury are 65% less, the chances of death are 37% less... Those are huge odds.

This idea that not wearing a helmet does not impact a third party is simply incorrect.

His medical bills, his brain injury, his choice that potentially his family will lose an earner and worst case his death.

The driver doesn’t need to feel guilt as the motorcyclist chose to take the risk against the odds.

Anything else is just other people trying to make themselves sound morally superior as if they always do everything by the book.

……..and even if they do, that’s your choice not theirs.

The world would be a better place if other people spent their time and energy looking after themselves and the people that depend on them and leave others to do the same.

In the event of an accident the decision of a motorcyclist not to wear a helmet impacts more than just the motorcyclist.

Helmets prevent avoidable brain injuries...   Not wearing a helmet is simply stupid, not understanding that not wearing helmet impacts others is also stupid.....

When such stupid people are around who don’t wear helmets, their common sense, intelligence and decision making is clearly questionable.....   and we have to share the roads with these fools.

It becomes an issue when tax payers foot the bill for medical expenses. Not sure how much it applies to Thailand. My biggest problem is with children as passengers or riders. Adults including government are expected to look after them.

Calling other people stupid who may have a different view to yours or make different decisions shows even less intelligence imo.

We have to share the world with many people whom we disagree with in many different scenarios. Resorting to the everyone who doesn’t agree with me is stupid argument just shows frustration that they cannot control other individuals.

Fair call and as I said I wear a seat belt or helmet laws aside and it's a choice I can make here,  in UK no choice.

I'm not trying be clever or dis-courage anyone that does things in a sensible way.

I enjoy the freedom where I live I no doubt in places like Bangkok and all other big Cities in Thailand safety is a priority.

I wonder if people who create signs and stupid text like that take everything so serious.

Sure, it's a good idea to wear a helmet to protect ourselves. And personally I do this most of the time.

But not all the time. Because a helmet is hot and it's a nice feeling to feel the wind without helmet.

Does that make me stupid or all those other terms mentioned above?

How many people ride bicycle without helmet? The risk is high.

How many pedestrians dare to cross any street in Thailand - and without helmet and protective clothes? Why do they do that?

And why are there people who think amulets will protect them?

This list goes on and on. Most of us are not always in the mood to protect us as much as we can. Sometimes we take a risk. That's life.

No mask = 20,000bht fine, no helmet = 100bht fine.

It's an easy choice to make.

Exactly life would simply become so mundane, so regulated it would become boring and the people also. Don't believe me well look at the Norwegian men.????

What a stupid statement, you cannot assess whether on a 2 minute or a 2hour journey whether some Neanderthal in a pickup is going to plough into you whilst arguing with the wife on his phone. This has nothing to do with your assessment of the journey.
