Associate Professor Dr. Nitipana Chierakul, chief of the respiratory disease and tuberculosis division

A prominent doctor has suggested a seven-day lockdown of Bangkok, to curb the spread of COVID-19 as the number of new infections is increasing.

Describing the situation as “desperate, without many options,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nitipatana Chierakul, chief of the respiratory disease and tuberculosis division of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, posted on Facebook today (Wednesday) that daily new infections keep increasing in the capital, with a likelihood they will rise well beyond the thousands per day.

He also stated that the discovery of new cases in hospitals accounts for over 10%, and that more children, elderly and those with high-risk diseases are being found infected during this wave than during previous outbreaks, signaling that the pandemic has spread further into communities.

Seven days, then seven weeks then seven months.    Lockdowns don’t work.    Stop this nonsense now and open the world.

    At last someone with sense!!!!

  • Too late, far too late, it's already in the wild.   The only way out of it now is to vaccinate the entire population which will likely take the best part of a full year.

it's getting worse and signs they've given up and considering opening. A tsunami 3rd\4th wave is possible. If only there were vaccines

Think I read that India had managed to vaccinate 8 million in a couple of days, perhaps Thailand could manage 60 million in 3 months.

Would of course involve buying enough vaccines seemingly a major hurdle for Pinnochio!

Bangkok cannot be properly locked down; the collateral damage would be catastrophic.

They could and probably should, however, re-impose some of the measures they had in place during the 1st wave, such as no interprovincial train and bus travel.

I also have to question the wisdom of easing the dine-in restrictions - every single day, I see groups of 5-6 idiots holding what looks like business meetings in coffee shops, without masks obviously, since it's difficult to stuff your face with cake wearing one.

The government might want a lockdown to prevent the resumption of the protests, which are due to resume tomorrow! But moving backwards after relaxing restrictions over the last few weeks seems unlikely.

Yes, it would be helpful if "lockdown" could be defined. We have in a sense been in a lockdown since the aftermath of Songkran travel, with restrictions on the essentially important shopping mall experience???? exempted. Please, dear God, let's not close all the exercise facilities we just reopened on 21 June. More than ever, unvaccinated people need to build up their immune systems through exercise and diet, and exposure to the sun. They do not need nails painted, and feet massaged, or dinner with a glass of water. The "temporary closure" rules implemented are inane, and it's always the sledgehammer to a nut approach. Critical thinking sorely missed.

A week now, a week next month, two weeks later and so on until the end of the world. What a mistake it was to ever follow the lead of CCP that gives whatever numbers they want. It is now a neverending cycle.

New rule...

Any public official advocating a lockdown should donate his salary (and perks and brown envelopes) to those who get put out of work, until the lockdown is over.

See how they like them apples.

...... who still gets a salary during lockdowns

Maybe full reopening with a one week full lockdown per month will keep COVID at bay without a decent vaccine program ????

Think you mean 3 million in 60 months

I agree.

lockdown, cases fall, open, cases rise,

lockdown, cases fall, open, cases rise,

lockdown, cases fall, open, cases rise,

lockdown, cases fall, open, cases rise,

................

Some point you have to take the risk and run with it, BUT, I get the feeling they cannot say lockdowns don't work as they would be opening up to claims of mishandling and destroying the economy needlessly.

I'm just waiting for Boris to say July 19th 'freedom day' wont happen and give it another 2 months

Pretty obvious that the virus can be substantially controlled via mass vaccinations.

Lockdowns, anti vaxers, bleach, bright lights. natural immunity,  and posturing politicians have not done very well in getting it under control.  Shots are the answer.  Get on with it.

It's all a misunderstanding, it'll be sorted out later in a phone call.

Depends on what you mean by work.

Any fool can see they do work so why anyone would say they don't is hard to understand. They do bring down the infection rate which in turn saves lives. This is a fact. The problem is how good a lockdown can be imposed. China did it very well but would Thailand go to the same extremes? The Delta (Indian) variant is extremely contagious. It is getting out of control in the UK even with an effective vaccination programme. Luckily the vaccines are working and keeping most of us alive and out of hospitals. It's the young and unvaccinated who are dying now but at a much lower rate.

Until more people are vaccinated, lockdowns are the only option to give Thailand more time. Unfortunately a week is far too short to make much difference. Of course, if you think lockdowns are nonsense and lives are expendable, then Brazil shows us how bad it can get - .25% of the whole population dead and growing. Doesn't sound too bad until you realise that that is over half a million people but still not as bad as the US thanks to another leader who thought weak people are worthless.

Hey you know what does work?  Vaccines! - but its hard to buy vaccines or get more IUI for hospitals when you are busy spending your money on the latest military bling!

It's late, not "too late", there are still lives to save. But a week is not going to do much. One or two months with targeted vaccination is needed.

Children get infected and spread covid but are far less likely to show any symptoms. That is why schools get closed during lockdowns.

I'm sorry my friend but lock-downs DO work ! Here in Laos, as soon as we had one or two people infected we locked down, within weeks, no more infections, we held a maximum of 42 virus cases and no deaths for over a year until several illegal entry Thai people with the virus crossed the Mekong and started our worst wave ... we ran into hundreds of cases per day ... so ... we locked down ... within weeks our cases dropped to 1 or 2 a day with '0' being recorded n Sunday ... we now opening up again ... of course, lock downs only work if you have the cooperation of the people !

At last, somebody with some sense. This is the only sensible option. There has to be some pain before there can be gain.

One of my friends was in a quarantine hotel for two weeks and watched from his hotel window as herds of construction workers piled into the back of a pickup every afternoon. No masks, no social distancing. What do you expect other than the rapid spread of the virus.
