Anutin: What happens in a Sandbox stays in a Sandbox

Thailand's DPM and Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul speaking in Bangkok on Sunday told the Thai media what a sandbox is. 

 

It is a "graba sai", he said helpfully. 

 

A sandbox. 

 

And what happens in a sandbox stays in a sandbox. 

 

The embattled minister was responding to Daily News questions after a rise of infections in Phuket following the start of the much heralded reopening of Thailand to foreign tourists on Thursday. 

 

"If there's a mess, it stays in the sandbox," he said while reassuring the public that everything was under control.

 

"It won't spread to anyone else's sandbox", he added. 

 

He expressed confidence in the Phuket governor, provincial administration, the tourism industry and the people themselves to handle everything well.

 

He also commented on news that came out of Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital that overworked medical staff had fainted on the job through exhaustion. 

 

He said he had made a visit on Saturday to the 49 staff working on the Covid ward there. 

 

Despite being under pressure he expressed his confidence in their work saying medical workers needed everyone's support at this time.

It could be the minister hopes that the time is when the ”sandbox guests” run out of money and they leave for the airport to exit the country.

I'm not sure he understands what a sandbox is (either the IT definition, or the children's playground definition). He probably thinks it's a box to carry sand.

What medical education does the Thai health minister have? What enables him to hold such an important position? Did he study medicine at an university? How many years has he practiced in health care?

So it's the usual bombardment of TV/Asean insults to the PM and Health minister and I'm not here to say they are not deserved. But I would guess  -- if they pay any attention at all --their attitude is

Yep, and all the TVF screamers who think that every minister in the government must have a degree in that subject just like in no other country at all.

Not sticking up for Anutin as I think he's a berk, but just being realistic about how the world works unlike most on here who seem to think Western countries are a utopia of goodness and perfection.

Considering his lot are worried about the efficacy of Sinovac that they have been rushing to inject 70% of Phuket populace with, any disaster stemming from it should fall square on his shoulders

If the answer you are looking for is "education, experience, skill" as to why Anutin is in charge and not someone else, the answer you will get is "corruption, cronyism, money".

 

"Incompetent" in Anutin's case is a compliment...that's just how...well...incompetent he truly is.

The problem is so much what's already inside a sandbox, it's rather what's coming into the sandbox from outside; i.e. letting healthy foreign tourists inside and mingle with high risk domestic arrivals...????

People who arrive in Phuket visa the Sandbox and leave to enter the rest of Thailand are:  fully-vaccinated, have passed an RT-PCR test 72 hours before departing for Phuket, have spent 14 days in a SHA Plus accommodation (where at a minimum 70% of the staff has been fully vaccinated) and have passed 3 (three) RT-PCR tests while in Phuket.

Why would a billionaire want to do such a low paid thankless job? Travelling around the country to COVID hotspots and being pilloried all the time. Can't even have a mask less coffee break without someone having a pop at him.
