Swiss tourist dead, believed raped, murdered in Phuket Sandbox

Featured Replies

I am NOT an armchair sleuth, an amateur Sherlock. But perhaps we should examine other possibilities, something out of the box, maybe.

What occurs to me, simplistically maybe, is that the Swiss lady was befriended in or around her resort accommodation, by, possibly, a Westerner.

They choose to go for a walk together to the waterfall area, and he decides to try his luck. She refuses his advances and one thing leads to another. Once the guy has raped her, there is a kind of no turning back . . .

Would the perp have hung around, or hopped on the first flight out of Phuket? Possibly the RTP should start examining those who checked out of their hotels early, or examine the passenger manifests on flights over the past few days, to narrow the search down?

Phuket is not, has never been a paradise island. In fact it's full of weirdos who pray on innocent tourists, just like Pattaya.

What measures do you think should be taken to stop this kind of thing from happening ?

Well of course there is no single fix or group of measures that can fix a sick society (for example the 'rape pandemic/culture' in India).   In practical terms, it'll be unpopular, but highly visible campaigns for locals and visitors along the lines of what you'd see in a lot of train stations or bus stations around the world : frequent and in your face signage *to be wary of pickpockets/solicitors/etc.* (beware of murderers/rapists/don't hitchhike here/watch your beverage signs here as needed).   Also, right at the airport and at all hotels, yearly crime stats (I recall seeing a rather public sign on Orchard Rd. in SG years ago that announced a 'crime alert' that included the date and location of the incident (although that was just a petty crime type announcement).   This way you get a mix of putting the onus on locals to hopefully change/prevent things if they can and also putting visitors on guard right out of the arrivals hall.

Lt Gen Kitrat deplored the woman’s death as “shocking”.

“This may affect the image of the safety of foreign tourists,”

What was that image before?  People already know Thailand is dangerous.  I don't know any country where so many foreigners fall from a balcony. And according to the local authorities in many cases suicide by depression, drugs or alcohol are the cause. If so then why don't we see this in any other country as much as in Thailand. The land of smiles has many faces and smiles.

That is a rather sexist macho remark.....

Being raped does not happen often to men ... so , as a woman , she is in a ' risk group ' men simply are not in .

Don't know what is sexist or macho about this ...?

I don't follow the logic in this statement.

Problem is: they will be under extreme pressure to close this case as fast as possible, how many Burmese, Vietnamese or Cambodians live around that area? because according to the police "Thais would not possible do anything like this".

exactly, if i were one of those migrants living there right now, i'd be traveling back to my country ASAP!

Back in the 1980’s I showed a picture of a young Aussie girl walking through a rain Forrest in Aust to my Thai gf she said “You can do this in Australia, if you do this in Phuket you can die”, (I did explain about someone taking the photo), but it was a a warning that I passed on to others over the years.

Well Ivan curtailed a lot of that for any young person.

So your view is women shouldn’t travel alone…perhaps you’d also like to see the introduction of guardianship laws and the outlawing of women travelling without the consent of their husbands or family

BS .

Being a woman and traveling alone , ( especially to places where there is nobody else around  ) , may just attract those mentally disturbed rapists , you deny this ?

We are living in times where it is better to be careful , that crime proves it .

The penalty may still be on the books but it hasn't been carried out in more than a decade to my knowledge. I remember an interesting article in the BP 10-15 years ago that profiled "Thailand's Last Executioner" about the man who supervised the firing squad that carried out the death penalty. Usually after all appeals are exhausted, a Royal commutation to life imprisonment is issued.

The last time it was carried out in Thailand was in 2018. They use lethal injection now.

Only a matter of time before they find a couple of blokes from Myanmar to pin it on.

Interesting...thanks for the update.

She may have been Geocaching. There's a Geocache box around that waterfall. I been meaning to go there and find it myself.

The post I commented upon was victim blaming, hence my post.

I guess that you refer to my post where I said that she should not have gone there alone ...?

That would have been a simple matter of precaution and does not have anything to do with  ' victim blaming ' .

but more expensive

Because it’s a quarantine island, a rapist/murderer is now running free on Phuket and all tourists are stuck there for at least two weeks after they arrive

I think it's a little naive to think there are no rapist/murderers on the island. It's quite a big place with many people. There more nutcases walking on the island. Just one nutcase just went off. Ofcourse people will be aware and catious now.

Last year August. But many murders happen in Pattaya (excluding the rape).

Edit; Apologies, I didn't see you meant only tourist. In that case, April 2019. German school teacher.

This story is so sad and tragic and, hopefully, the perpetrator(s) are found swiftly.

Unfortunately, it also highlights that the Thai authorities want to be seen as actively and swiftly responding  to capital crimes, when there is an international ‘face’ issue, but do not appear to allocate the same resources or urgency to the progression and investigation of the plethora of local murders, that are daily news items.

Hopefully, in the future, the public will eventually wake up and prompt the authorities into addressing the root cause of capital crimes (and corruption) in Thailand and motivate societal change based on the premise that prevention is better than cure ... a pipe dream ????

With the Investigation into this wholly repugnant and savage crime, I only hope that the RTP will conduct themselves with some kind of dignity, and not turn the whole thing into something the same as the Kho Tao murders of the Two young British backpackers a while back.

Dignity from the RTP will show dignity to the deceased and Her family, something that was very sadly missing in the Kho Tao case.

The whole thing was a complete Circus, and even to this day there are many that believe the Two young Burmese Lads that were convicted were used to cover up the real culprits of the crime and were made scapegoats.

This poor Woman deserves at least some respect from the RTP, as would all victims of such a dreadful crime.

No it's not, any woman who is not built like a WWE femzon or is skilled  in self defense should not walk around strange or even known areas alone.  Doesn't have to be in the company of a man but should not travel alone.  Guys  may be beaten and robbed but  punks  will take adavantage and opourtunity to rape a womam.

I don't drink and as  a martial artist was always aware of my suroundings ,now even more so as I am in 70's and not as strong/fast or tough as I used to be.
