allanos Posted August 6, 2021 Posted August 6, 2021 I am NOT an armchair sleuth, an amateur Sherlock. But perhaps we should examine other possibilities, something out of the box, maybe. What occurs to me, simplistically maybe, is that the Swiss lady was befriended in or around her resort accommodation, by, possibly, a Westerner. They choose to go for a walk together to the waterfall area, and he decides to try his luck. She refuses his advances and one thing leads to another. Once the guy has raped her, there is a kind of no turning back . . . Would the perp have hung around, or hopped on the first flight out of Phuket? Possibly the RTP should start examining those who checked out of their hotels early, or examine the passenger manifests on flights over the past few days, to narrow the search down? 1 1 1

Well of course there is no single fix or group of measures that can fix a sick society (for example the 'rape pandemic/culture' in India). In practical terms, it'll be unpopular, but highly visible campaigns for locals and visitors along the lines of what you'd see in a lot of train stations or bus stations around the world : frequent and in your face signage *to be wary of pickpockets/solicitors/etc.* (beware of murderers/rapists/don't hitchhike here/watch your beverage signs here as needed). Also, right at the airport and at all hotels, yearly crime stats (I recall seeing a rather public sign on Orchard Rd. in SG years ago that announced a 'crime alert' that included the date and location of the incident (although that was just a petty crime type announcement). This way you get a mix of putting the onus on locals to hopefully change/prevent things if they can and also putting visitors on guard right out of the arrivals hall. 2
Popular Post ThailandGuy Posted August 6, 2021 Popular Post Posted August 6, 2021 Quote Lt Gen Kitrat deplored the woman’s death as “shocking”. “This may affect the image of the safety of foreign tourists,” What was that image before? People already know Thailand is dangerous. I don't know any country where so many foreigners fall from a balcony. And according to the local authorities in many cases suicide by depression, drugs or alcohol are the cause. If so then why don't we see this in any other country as much as in Thailand. The land of smiles has many faces and smiles. 4 2

Being a woman and traveling alone , ( especially to places where there is nobody else around ) , may just attract those mentally disturbed rapists , you deny this ? We are living in times where it is better to be careful , that crime proves it . 3 1

I remember an interesting article in the BP 10-15 years ago that profiled "Thailand's Last Executioner" about the man who supervised the firing squad that carried out the death penalty. Usually after all appeals are exhausted, a Royal commutation to life imprisonment is issued. The last time it was carried out in Thailand was in 2018. They use lethal injection now. 2 1

Popular Post Encore Posted August 6, 2021 Popular Post Posted August 6, 2021 This story is so sad and tragic and, hopefully, the perpetrator(s) are found swiftly. Unfortunately, it also highlights that the Thai authorities want to be seen as actively and swiftly responding to capital crimes, when there is an international ‘face’ issue, but do not appear to allocate the same resources or urgency to the progression and investigation of the plethora of local murders, that are daily news items. Hopefully, in the future, the public will eventually wake up and prompt the authorities into addressing the root cause of capital crimes (and corruption) in Thailand and motivate societal change based on the premise that prevention is better than cure ... a pipe dream ???? 1 2
Popular Post Cake Monster Posted August 6, 2021 Popular Post Posted August 6, 2021 With the Investigation into this wholly repugnant and savage crime, I only hope that the RTP will conduct themselves with some kind of dignity, and not turn the whole thing into something the same as the Kho Tao murders of the Two young British backpackers a while back. Dignity from the RTP will show dignity to the deceased and Her family, something that was very sadly missing in the Kho Tao case. The whole thing was a complete Circus, and even to this day there are many that believe the Two young Burmese Lads that were convicted were used to cover up the real culprits of the crime and were made scapegoats. This poor Woman deserves at least some respect from the RTP, as would all victims of such a dreadful crime. 3
