Assassination plot against UN Ambassador to Myanmar linked to arms dealer in Thailand

A plot to assassinate UN Ambassador to Myanmar Kyaw Moe Tun has been foiled with two men already detained. The attempt allegedly also involved an arms dealer in Thailand.

Court documents, filed in a US federal court in New Jersey, say that 28-year-old Phyo Hein Htut and 20-year-old Ye Hein Zaw were arrested on charges of plotting in the US to cause bodily harm by tampering with the tyres of the ambassador’s car to cause an accident, followed by more lethal action if necessary.

The FBI also alleges that Phyo Hein Htut revealed the plans to them. Ye Hein Zaw initially contacted an alleged arms dealer living in Thailand with links to the Myanmar military and US$2,000 was transferred to him as a down payment with US$2,000 more to follow, with a final payment of another $US1,000 when the mission was completed. Ye Hein Zaw later contacted Phyo Hein Htut.

You don't get much of an assassin for $2000 these days.

There you go! LOL. Next will be "only known with the initial B". (I made that initial up, mods).

Apparently reading further one of the arrested was the Ambassadors security volunteers and informed another volunteer of the plot.

Sometimes folk need to remember where they are.

Stories like this help us to do just that.

The next PM could well be a convicted heroin smuggler.

So, another feather in the hat then.

The plot was to assassinate Myanmar's ambassador to the UN...not the UN's ambassador to Myanmar ????????

Maybe the thread title should be corrected.

the "governments" of Myanmar and Thailand are looking like peas in a pod.

So..Mission Impossible ????

He is a vocal critic of Myanmar's military rulers, who seized power in a coup on 1 February.

The junta later fired him - but he continues to represent the country's civilian government at the world body.

--------------------------------

This is ridiculous.....how can he remain Myanmar's ambassador to the UN if he was fired by them?

Is the UN still keeping ambassadors appointed by Idi Amin, Saddam Hussain etc...?

Still more than enough for a contract hit in Thailand or Burma though.

All filthy rich generals who are only looking out for themselves and will do anything to remain in power. Birds of a feather…..

Well they both have military governments and the mentality will be similar. I wish other countries would refuse to deal with countries who have governments ruling by force and against the wishes of the people.

Perhaps you forgot that Khmer Rouge continued to hold the Cambodia seat at the UN until 1993, even though Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1979 to oust the Khmer Rouge regime. The UN is still recognizing the Suu Kyi government of Burma a/k/a Myanmar.

Yes the Khmer Rouge seat was kept in the UN because those wanting to remove their ambassador were the USSR and its supporters and they were in the minority....but I do not understand who decides which regime its legitimate : the Security Council or the General Assembly.

I just looked at the UN Charter but couldn't find the answer there. In the case of a country already a UN member, I believe that it involves a majority vote of the General Assembly. However, most of the their important decisions seem to be "upon the recommendation of the Security Council".
