Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry will request, from the cabinet at its mobile meeting in the southern province of Krabi on November 15th and 16th, a special budget of more than 100 million baht to have Thai-born K-Pop rap idol, Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal, of “BLACKPINK”, and Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli appear during Thailand’s New Year countdowns.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said today (Monday) that the 100 million baht is just the cost of the appearances of the two stars, adding that he expects more details of the appearance contracts to be available on October 30th.

He insisted that the project is worth the investment, estimated at about 200 million baht in total, adding that it will help to boost the economy and the flagging tourism sector.

Here's a novel idea, use the 100 million baht for free 1 day hotel and tests for incoming tourists !

I really do not want to p*ss on his parade but will someone please tell me how this is going to happen? I admit life has to go on and we all have to deal with Covid but with all the hurdles there are to come here and the fact that everything is not under control makes me wonder if this is money well spent. Or is this going to turn into a damp squib and a humongous loss?

Sage idea but how much really, really of the 100 million will be spent on those event do you think? you seems to forget that in this country nothing is happening without someone putting something in their pockets...

Well spending the money on that, will for sure not remove the food-lines with poor people. Wonder what would really be best for tourism?

One muppet talking as if its done and then another stating the proposed cost has not even been tabled for discussion and approval.  Why do these tools spout nonsense before the ducks are all in a row......time to board the submarine me thinks.

This is a grotesque tone deaf waste of money. Or maybe the PM did take a bet the other day that he couldn't make the people even more bitter.

  • Popular Post

How about using the money instead to feed some of its people who are dying of starvation and malnutrition?

Or is that too low a priority compared with image?

  • Popular Post

Why waste money that can be spent on things the country needs, only to crowd people together and risk spreading this virus!?

IDIOTS!

Divide by 33, it's not that much money in the 'endorsement' or 'appearance' world.

Indeed, one hears he will happily appear for a basket full of chicken essence pots tied up with ribbons...

"Sic transit gloria mundi"

Bloomin bizarre as always.

Half of Thailand has never heard of Andrea Bocelli and the other half think he is an Italian footballer or Andrea is a woman.

Seriously, you can count the number of opera lovers in Thailand on one finger, let alone a hand.

Would we not be entertained?

Taking it to new heights - congratulations to all those involved and I am sure that it will be successful to the artists, for the artists and for the organizers as well.

Just make sure that those projected 1,000,000 foreign tourists with an average spending of 75,000 Baht (as per a statement of a TAT executive) will be 1) aware 2) participate at the function and 3) also pay for their attendance.

Good luck and give, whoever had the idea, a solid gold medal, it takes rip-off to seriously new heights where man never had been before ..........

Quite a ludicrous and shallow suggestion.

Arrange a Lalisa concert because her popularity with the masses is very high; hoping that the masses then become happier with the people who arranged it for them.  Also thinking that pictures taken of her and the arrangers will make people think she supports them.

At the same time arrange a Bocelli concert, because that's what the upper echelons would like to see.

I would also be interested to see the attendance figures for other New Year concerts and if it includes hordes of people who actually travel from other countries to attend.  How many of those would be deterred by travel and socialising restrictions that may be in place?

Just because they say it will be used to boost the economy, it does not mean that that is what it will be used for. The usual suspects must be hurting now that so few tourists are available to pluck, so they, IMO, have had to come up with an alternative excuse to enrich themselves.

Whenever large sums of money are mooted, one does well to remember which country we are discussing.

THE ANSWER IS NO BUT HELL NO!  PACK YOUR BAGS YOU ARE FIRED AND DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT! ????

Why has no one told the organisers, the tourists are not coming?  If they want to see packs of wild dogs they will go to a local zoo near a restaurant that serves wine.

Doesn't Thailand have entertainment promoters. Why is the Government getting involved in the entertainment industry or is it just a profit opportunity for certain gov't officials to get a New Year bonus?.

Thai style to a T. I’ve worked at many a school where kids go nuts in the classrooms, and barely understand a word of what they’re copying, which passes for learning. But damn if those buildings aren’t gleaming with fresh paint, and the landscapers don’t have those hedges perfectly trimmed. I’ve even seen directors out there checking them with a meter stick. Hah. If only they gave the students such attn.

Exactly CWS, the government buildings also gleam with sparkling cleanliness.  Yet it's just the lipstick on a pig. Thai society and filth they throw everywhere tells the truth.

Shoe-repairers.

Last week it was 200 million and a done deal.

Phipat has a different agenda to what is really needed.
