Bars, pubs, nightclubs and other entertainment venues in Thailand could remain closed until 2022, according to a proposal due to be considered by the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

A report surfaced in Thai media on Wednesday (Nov 10) that Cabinet ministers have proposed keeping entertainment venues closed until after the new year.

However, countdown events in five locations across the country, presumably in key tourism areas, are set to be given the green light to go ahead.

The report also said that Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-Cha called on business owners within the entertainment industry “not to be selfish” with regards to reopening.

The proposals to keep entertainment venues, as well as possible easing of restrictions in Thailand, are set to be announced on Friday (Nov 11) following the conclusion of a CCSA meeting, which the PM chairs.

Despite restrictions surrounding alcohol sales in restaurants being eased in some locations earlier this month, namely Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Phang Nga, bars, pubs and nightclubs across the country remain closed.

“not to be selfish”

When one appears to be the only group being restricted to beyond poverty, they are feeling victimized more than being selfish.

'They should not be selfish'? As a well known activist said "How dare he? How dare he?" Many people in the entertainment business rely on being able to serve alcohol which is part and parcel of the industry. Due to the restrictions imposed on them, they and their families are without jobs and wanting for food and lifes essentials. How dare he call them selfish when he and his gang of self serving cronies are looking forward to their banquet where they can pat each other on the back and say what a good job they have done in bringing the country to its knees? Hipocricy is rampant in this leadership. How dare he!!? ????

I basically gave up even trying to find logic in Thailand.

But sometimes I still think: Why?

What do they think is the point of this? Do they want to make sure fewer people visit Thailand? Do they think more people will get infected when more places, with close contact, will open?

Is it just to pi@$ off people? What is the real reason for this?

I think even those people who make the decisions must be aware that nightlife is a major attraction for people who live in Thailand and who visit Thailand.

Hopefully they open pubs/bars in Pattaya soon. I saw loads of "Pattaya looking" types in Bangkok last weekend. I think we are being invaded. There will be rows of Pattaya plated Fortuners jamming up Soi 4 soon, bringing their unvaccinated brethren with them, Chang vests, cargo shorts and all. Sunburnt shaved heads everywhere. Please lord, open a few bars down there - this has to stop ????.

There is a negative sentiment about that... maybe not this year.

Plus most of the country..............some beer served in coffee mugs, but many restaurants (formerly pubs) openly serving bottles

Prayut and his oppos need to get out of the office and participate in real life in Thailand.

I feel the need to stir the pot. Does anyone else believe this is a DELIBERATE effort to kill the red-light venues, as an indirect way to actualize the xenophobia of the current “administration.” They hate foreigners, they want them out, and this is an effective way to do it without overtly declaring so; similar to the retirement alterations

There is no other logic behind these specific closures, considering that places like tree town are blatantly selling alcohol and the place is packed with people every night. there is no logic in closing open air bars if this is allowed max

True, but people don't hang around for 2 or 3 hours in 7-11 chugging back their bottle of 100 Pipers????

This PM is unbelievable! He asks business owners that he has shut down and not helped at all for what would be at least 8 months not to be selfish all the while he hasn't lost or sacrificed a thing

Not personally seen any of the big clubs open around Nana open, but there are plenty of bars operating. Soi 7 was rammed last Saturday.

Only select people have rights to be selfish!

Saved about half a million this year, less last year. My girls will spend it in Oz once they are ready to move to the free world.

Errr... I not talking about Covid times.
