Cold snap and alcohol easing: Thai doctor warns that booze doesn't keep you warm, can kill you

A Thai doctor said that drinking alcohol doesn't keep you warm.

In fact it can kill you.

Fall asleep in the cold after a bender and get dehydrated and that's your lot, said rehab medic Dr Sarayuth Bunchaiphanichwattana.

He told Bangkok Business News - who suggested it was an old wives' tale about getting warm after a drink - that he was concerned that the government's easing of the Covid rules would lead to a spike in boozing.

He recommended putting on a coat if you're cold or doing some exercise.

And quitting altogether was easily the best option.

The revelations come as Thailand enters a cold snap and PM Prayuth ponders further easing on the rules on drinking.

Yeah, and try saying that name whilst under the influence.

Well they are right . It's perfectly fine to drink alcohol , but not if you are cold and trying a drink to heat you up , since in fact it does just the opposite . Alcohol widens your veins and by that more blood goes to your skin . This makes you feel warmer , but in fact it is cooling your core temp .

Nobody said you can't do , only give the recommendation for people who do try such thing .There are people dying many times in Thailand from undercooling , and many Thais do not have the knowledge that in fact the lao khao just does the opposite .

Nothing like religious or teetotaler mentality to ruin objectivity when commenting on alcohol consumption.

Oh, hot sake and hot buttered rum certainly warm things up on a cold day; so be careful when you generalize.

If it gets cold here, I'll just wear a thicker T-shirt and drink room temp beer, 555.????

Is hypothermia a common cause of death in Thailand?

Some of my office staff have the A/C on lowest setting, and wear jackets, so I suppose it's plausible. ????

Smart people. But then...????

Alcohol burns, they fire your car with it. What is this guy talking about? ????

Waouh !

You need to be a doctor to know that ???

I learn this 40 years ago in school (about alcohol on Saint Bernard dog was not a good idea) !

Another one who has no idea about reality ????

The alternative, keep us all locked up and take away all alcohol so that we can survive Covid no doubt, as someone said in an earlier post, f/o and leave us children alone.

If alcohol don't keep them warm, then they obviously have not been drinking enough of it.

I think everyone knew this. i only read the article to see if there was something else to know.

I could probably only say it if I WAS under the influence.

On the contrary, a large tot just before I go to seep works wonders at keeping me toasty.

I do have ample empirical evidence of the contrary.

Flashback: Ukraine, January 1999. Temperature around -12, I was feeling cold even inside the room.

Andrei took out the garilka.

Shto gram after shto gram, 2 bottles had been emptied, we ran out into the snow in our underwear after that.

Felt like a beach in Phuket.

Not that I would have been able to tell the difference.

So can crossing the road, but my chances of dying after a whisky to keep the chill off is less likely to end in death.

I do exercise at home, but would love to get out of the village without the motorcycle or car.

If the good doctor could recommend how to avoid the soi dogs, I could interact more with the local community.

She must be very clean! ????

Put you coat on AND have a beer!

Of course it's not the booze keeps me warm. It's the L̶B̶F̶M̶! Er sorry, LBBW (bed warmer)! ????

Who cares about warmth. Beer tastes great and makes me so mellow. Get a life doctor.
