Sierra Leone man caught with 3.8 million baht of cocaine - he swallowed it before arrival, say customs

A man from Sierra Leone has been charged with smuggling 3.8 million baht's worth of cocaine into Thailand.

It is believed that he swallowed the drugs weighing 1,280 grams,  contained in 74 capsules, on the journey from Guinea-Bissau in west Africa.

He arrived at Suvarnabhumi on February 12th and was given a luggage check but no irregularities were found.

Customs and other agencies kept tabs on him, however, at his place of quarantine, a hotel in Chan Road, Bangkok.

He was searched on leaving the hotel on Tuesday at 4.30 am and the drugs were found in a shoulder bag.

He has been charged with smuggling a Class 2 narcotic.

The customs department has handled 28 drugs cases since last year with a street price value of 880.6 million baht, reported Thai PBS

Give that man a seat in the Thai parliament

  • Interesting way to earn a long stay in Thailand but he could have just used an agent

  • How can they prove he smuggled it in? The pills may have been left in the quarantine hotel before he got there, or dropped off during his stay. I know how unlikely this is, but surely Customs' job is

Interesting that the authorities knew enough to surveil this guy until "things worked out".

Lends credence the urban legend that some mules get snitched for various/sundry reasons.

There have been a few cocaine busts recently, 15.5 Kg at Suvarnabhumi last week.

I wonder how many more are monitored by customs and other agencies, this is the reason they want to trace and track each arrival.

Probably thought the 3.8 million baht income per year on the airport arrival form was suspicious !

How can they prove he smuggled it in? The pills may have been left in the quarantine hotel before he got there, or dropped off during his stay. I know how unlikely this is, but surely Customs' job is at the border and anything that passes their eagle eyes is their loss. Did they racially profile him?

and when he bought the laxative they just knew what was on its way.

Giving a bad name to the tens of thousands of tourists from Sierra Leone that visit Thailand every year.

Let's hope you're equally smug and judgmental when you see supposedly squeaky clean white men being pulled out of taxis by the police on "Suky".
That's racial profiling too . . . the police know that whitey is the African dealers' number one customer.

Hope he was joking

I'm not saying internal smuggling of drugs has been going on for a long time but at least one entry in the Bible starts......And so it came to pass.....????

Yeah........ by the tooth fairy

Has anyone does the maths. 1280 grams is a lot to swallow with each capsule weighing 17.3 grams.

Bht 3.8M divided by 74 is Bht 51350 EACH capsule. No knowing the going rate, it seems a lot.

Did they see him 'pass the drugs out' of his body, or send the bag shown containing the drugs, for forensic examination. ie vomit or s**t on it. I doubt it.

Please tell me how this man can be charged with a money value on the drugs he has been found to have ?

Surely he can only be charged with the weight of the drugs in his possession .

Not difficult for Customs officers to recognise suspicious people...arriving from suspiciously dodgy places!

He was arrested with the drugs in his possession, doesn't matter how they got into the country and Customs do not have to prove that he smuggled them in but, with the details provided, it's safe to presume that he told them what transpired.

"...surely Customs' job is at the border and anything that passes their eagle eyes is their loss.  ".

555555!  It doesn't work like that.  You really think that if you can get contraband past Customs you're good to go with no consequences?!

Did they racially profile him?

Probably, but so what?   They caught a drug trafficker, didn't they?
