A recent story about a Korean national in Thailand who had begun working as a barber sparked much debate among Thai netizens.

The barber, who cut hair in the style of stars from hit Korean TV shows, ever popular in Thailand, went viral on the social media platform TikTok.

His sudden popularity led scores of comments from users informing the barber that he was actually breaking the law.

In response to the incident, the Department of Employment issued a statement to clarify that under Thai employment law, foreigners are prohibited from engaging in certain occupations.

Someone needs to drag Thailand into the 21st century

  • I wonder if Thai people overseas are barred from certain professions and treated with bias and prejudice as foreigners are here...

Yes they are.  You think a Thai person can go on holiday to UK or American and then get a job there or start their own business?

When I arrived here 19 years ago, I remember reading this and the reason was that Thais were not yet ready to compete.

Roll on almost 2 decades later and they still ...... are not ready to compete. LOL ????

Nah, they'd hire migrant labor for that thankless job.

I know many Thais that went to the US, picked up jobs, and even opened up their own businesses, many of them opened up Thai Restaurants and then bought houses and land.....try again

A few Thai millionaires did just that in Australia. Started on student visas mainly.

Well they can't in the UK, I can't speak for the US

Until Thais are able to compete they will always be protected.  That is the problem with ASEAN one of it's premise is that member countries will allow people to compete equally for jobs.

As long jobs are protected people will think that they are safe and do not have to improve.

I think from what I've read it is one of those things that is against the law but they turn a blind eye to it presumably because it promotes Thailand (mainly). They should be paying taxes as well ?

Thailand 4.0 - only colours, fonts and design of the landing page changed. Everything else including algorithm, logic, navigation, UI and UX remain same same like Thailand 1.0 'beta version' krub pom

Of course they are.  If a foreigner wants to work in the UK they need a work permit and to get a work permit they have to be skilled and, almost exactly like here:

To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you must:

- work for a UK employer that’s been approved by the Home Office

- have a ‘certificate of sponsorship’ from your employer with information about the role you’ve been offered in the UK

- do a job that’s on the list of eligible occupations

-be paid a minimum salary - how much depends on the type of work you do

And, guess what, hair dresser is not one of the eligible occupations in the UK either.

Seriously what kind of reality do you live in when you think we are discriminated against for needing to be highly skilled in a specialist industry to be granted a work permit?  It is normal.
