BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has affirmed that it will not take sides in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as the kingdom prepares to join a high-level U.S.-ASEAN meeting next week in Washington, D.C.

On Sunday (8 May), Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha briefed the press on Thailand’s position as he announced his participation in the meeting scheduled for May 12-13 in the United States.

According to the premier, the Russia-Ukraine crisis could be discussed between ASEAN leaders and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden during the meeting. However, he said he believed there were more pressing issues, such as the economy, trade and investment, as well as situations in the region that must be resolved immediately.

Gen Prayut made clear Thailand’s support for the ASEAN position on the conflict, which promotes the need for peaceful dialogue between the parties involved. In addition, he said his seven years as prime minister guaranteed his understanding of international affairs and the kingdom’s proper stance on the issue.

Usana Berananda, director-general of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, said the Russia-Ukraine war, as well as tensions in the South China Sea and the crisis in Myanmar, could be discussed at the summit.

According to officials, Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon will be in charge of national affairs while the Thai prime minister is in the United States.

What this small, timid man is saying is that Thailand continues to be a cowardly nation, and demonstrates it's ever increasing irrelevance in world affairs and on the world stage.

If China ever tries to take over Thailand I hope the west does nothing and remains  ¨neutral¨.

Well when he has similar principles as Putin it would surprise me if he said anything different.

Ah bless his little cotton socks!

"He"! may well believe it..................I certainly dont!

I think, unofficially, Thailand is on Russia's side, but they can't risk saying so.

Thailand is always on the 'money-side', and Ukraine is economically insignificant for Thailand. (Plus, Thailand's best buddy's ????????

best buddy is Russia.)

You have to give him marks for his ignorance.

His understanding of international affairs amounts to

the soft power of sticky rice and mango.

Not too sure about this worldwide majority business.

Might do some real research and checking.

Others might suggest that the world isn't imbibing in this particular flavour of Kool-Aid.

Actually, the majority might side with neutrality, indifference and don't give a rat's backside to ever-present Anglophone manipulating propaganda and atrocious empire building.

Putin is the empire builder in this war.

That affirms how the  world views Thailand.

Bet he may have a hard time looking into 'Vice President' Biden's eyes with that spineless stance on the Russia-Ukraine. Discuss the crisis in Myanmar at the summit possibly ? I would imagine a neutral stance, Military minds think alike.....

  • Popular Post

Cha Cha is just a big pus....y that belive him actualy are in power.

  • Popular Post

The neutral stance is as worthy as his statement on his seven years as leader understanding international affairs .

He only understands non democratic means of holding on to power .

  • Popular Post

So he wants to talk trade and investment, instead of Ukraine, does he? Okee-dokee. How about reciprocal tariffs, investments tied to human rights standards, increased inspection times of Thai exports at American ports. In other words a "neutral" stance on economic ties, instead of special access and allowances.

Why don't you explain it for us mere mortals who are very sure we actually do know the back story? Do you think we are all illiterate fools because we speak English?

  • Popular Post

Anyone who can be neutral on the Ukraine thing in the light of what Putin is inflicting on Ukraine has to be a brainless dolt.

I guess that explains the government position pretty well.

I hope Prayut doesn't waste any of his precious time and wisdom speaking with the Vice President and holds out until granted time with the President himself.

Thailand's leaders would likely remain neutral too.

  • Popular Post

This clown has no moral compass. He can't see right from wrong. Only money and control sway's his opinion. Let's hope Thailand is never invaded, and if it was then other countries don't take a "neutral stance".

I mentioned this earlier but, IMO all aid to Thailand should be cut and routed to Ukraine.

That includes all foreign investments in Thailand. Japan and the US are the two biggest FI in Thailand to my knowledge. All US investments should be put on a 5 year withdrawal.

Problem is that would hurt the Thai people more than the generals. We all know the generals don't give a shiny s.h.i.t.e about the Thai populace.

Like a policeman at the scene of an accident, he remains neutral regarding both sides, meaning he will be receptive to gratuities from either.

he said he believed there were more pressing issues, such as the economy, trade and investment

Now we're talkin'!

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden

Hey, give some credit to the guy who edited the speech, it originally said Harry Truman.

Wise decision. The Ukraine war is none of Thailand’s business, so why get involved?

It's none of the Western world's business either, but the West never can resist preaching and meddling.
