DEPUTY Prime Minister-cum-Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said yesterday (Dec. 6) that he disagrees with a proposal of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to extend the closing time of entertainment venues to 4 a.m., Amarin TV said.

 

Shutting night venues at 2 a.m. is probably appropriate in light of the Covid-19 outbreak and to prevent accidents that may occur through excessive drinking, he said, adding that it is essential to maintain balance in all dimensions.

 

Meanwhile Mr. Thanakorn Kuptachit, an adviser to the Thai Alcohol Business Association, told Matichon newspaper that if night venue closing time is not extended from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. before the Christmas and New Year festive season it would lead to big loss of opportunity to earn additional revenue.

Thai Public Health Minister says he disagrees with 4 AM nightspot closing, says it can spread Covid

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he disagreed with allowing nightspots in certain tourism spots to stay open until 4 AM because it could spread Covid-19.

Anutin, who is the main proponent of cannabis legalization, gave an interview with the Thai media before attending the cabinet meeting today, saying the Public Health Ministry was concerned that the nightlife closing hour extension to 4 AM from 2 AM could lead to the spread of Covid-19 and road accidents.

 

He stated that closing at 2 AM was already appropriate for the nightlife sector. However, the minister added that he was willing to respect the majority in the cabinet.

He probably based his decision on a scientific report providing evidence that the COVID virus tends to be more aggressive between 02.00 am and 04.00am.

Can't disagree entirely, who needs to out after 2am? I can remember my guide in Iceland going out trout fishing after midnight but it was full daylight early July.  

 

Boomboom is better in the afternoon anyhow.

There is a small sporting event on at the moment where the games (50% of the quarter finals and 100% of the semi finals) kick off at 2am.   So there is that.   

This parasitic dog should be sent to concentration camp for guaranteeing, maybe China or North Korea, he'll do perfectly fine there.

The problem is Thai Raak Thai, so I think they will choose him instead.

If the argument was to close at 6pm or even 8pm to avoid COVID spreading, i could understand.  But 2 vs 4 am will not make a difference.  It is not likely that at 2am one finally decides to unmask and snog, but not do that at 1am.

 

I would like to see his data to backup this claim.

 

Making baseless claims here diminishes credibility when he tries to claim marijuana is safe.

I agree with him that 2am should be enough, although his reasoning seems not right. Covid has not much to do with closing hours... but how the "Alcohol-Business Association" spins it is appalling as well!

most trouble and/or traffic accidents are at night or at least when it's dark. I also like to watch soccer but I watch it in daytime, much easier, no disruption of my daily routine! 

Covid works wonders for the command and control of nations.

Couldn't agree more! He is blatantly anti farang, yet wants them here to boost the economy? Doh! His only educational qualification is in Engineering, but he is Minister of Health? Doh! Everybody should wear a mask - no they shouldn't - yes they should - OK, up to you! Doh! He goes to WHO  Summit meetings and doesn't know what certificates or visas he needs to attend? Doh!
