In Thailand Rule #1/ never invest in or buy property. Rule #2/ ( applies in any country ) never employ ( or work for ) friends or relations.

Yes many of those as well. There are some though as long as you have the right format and business brain who own successfull bars, some even a chain of them.

" threatened by a policeman in plain clothes who he believes may have been fake " ...it gets more and more ridiculous . A classic example of why not to invest in the nightlife scene in Patts .

Welcome to Thailand where you will own nothing but be happy. Straight out of the handbook of the World Economic forum.

Where is Flowers, to help this guy.. He thinks he knows all about bars and all the important people, he's a genius, surely he can help to sort this out..

Get the hell out of there ! a bullet in the head you end up dead is that really worth it NO cut your losses and learn from the experience Thais are the wrong people to upset if they lose face anything can happen .

I wonder what type of Visa he has?

Does it matter what visa he has I don’t think so if he’s got people running it on his behalf he’s just the investor he’s only 49 so he won’t have retirement ( extension of stay )

For a man that had frequented Thailand for Years, and then moved here permanently in Sept 2021, this Guy learned absolutely nothing.

Self inflicted wounds have little sympathy

Don't buy properties? As in condo's? Why is that?

Buy a house, condo, etc and stuck with it when it goes wrong.

All night karaokes move next door to houses, condos let the horde rent by the night etc.

In LOS a farang basically has no rights when it goes wrong. Pay a lawyer to sort it 555555555555

As always in LOS, it's great till it's not.

I've read too many tales of woe on this forum ( and TVF ) from people that left their brains at the airport.

I learned the lesson very early on. I stayed at a nice resort on Chaweng Beach where a farang had built a lovely teak room for yoga classes.

Went back next holiday and both farang and yoga room had vanished.

Never did find out what happened, but I'll bet he didn't go voluntarily.

BS, bought property, setup businesses, employed family and never had a problem.

Most foreigners who go into business in Thailand have never run a business in their life, don't have any business sense and don't do proper research. Signing a lease for only a year is a NOGO to start with.

Always an exception to the rule, but get back to us in 10 years and let us know how it's going.

What defines a successful bar owner in your mind. Bar can be full every day but the total cost can be higher than the revenue.

Yes, one can make a small fortune, if you start with a large one! Not going well for this guy,

All barstool wisdom from somebody who doesn't live here anymore.

Been here 40 years

So what if I don't live there now? Is that supposed to impress me?

I lived there long enough to know how it is.

If you had a valid point ( you don't ) the forum wouldn't have regular stories of woe such as the OP.

This sounds like he has taken a sub lease for 12 months from the leaseholder and doesn't own anything.

I think it looks as though he just paid for his trusted mate to sign the lease from the landlord and, obviously, doesn't own anything.

I've often been asked about how to start a business in Thailand. They've usually already been reading and start going off about the minimum number of Thai hires to get a work permit, leasing a location, the paperwork, etc.

I tell them to forget all that. Get a good Thai lady. Make sure she's up to the job, i.e., not of college age and glued to the phone. Find a spot in a busy local market. Find whatever food's not already being served, and get your lady started on that. I've done it on two occasions with my wife so far. 300-800 baht daily rent. 30-40k start up cash for materials and the first batch of food. She's made it back after the first month. Not as exciting as a bar, but a lot safer.

Was it Washington bar area in Bangkok where owners were forced out, the bully boys were sent in at nighttime.

I think you're describing Chuvit's Sukhumvit Square, Soi 10, bar area that was cleared during the night in 2003.  Definitely not Washington Square, Soi 22.
