Having read all the comments I am alarmed by the hatred towards this guy from foreigners/ex pats I arrived in Thailand when he was PM had he remained in that post we might have been witnessing a Thailand that had gone forward rather than backwards it’s time for the old guard to accept the people’s choice of government.

Do you think he made a deal with the current government when he saw the election result?  Could they offer him more than the coalition could?

Is it possible that you are only looking at the fact that he "did so much for the people", rather than what his actual political/business practices were?

Thaksin trying to divide and conquer, so he can fill his pockets again. 

He's confident Pita cannot be PM, not enough votes from the Senate and/ or banned from standing as PM.

So PT will have a crack at gaining the PM vote. To get the Senators' votes, they'll have to ditch MF and bring on the usual tired suspects, Bhumjaithai, Palang Pracharat, etc.

Here's how it will play out imo 

PT- 141 votes

Bhumjaithai - 71

Chart Thai Pattana- 10

There's a few more single digit parties that would join so let's add another 10 votes, total 231.  I guess Wan Noor's Pracharat join so now 240 MPs

Yes Pravit and his Palang Pracharat with his 40 MPs, some ex-PT MPs) plus all his senators to vote himself or Settha as PM.

Part of the deal is to let Thaksin come home.

So, imo, PT will betray MF and their 'reputation' as progressive, democracy lovers will go down in flames. 

Left in Opposition - MF, Thai Sang Thai, possibly Prayuth's UTNP, possibly Democrats, rough total:

Focus on the facts, prior to the election Taksin said he would come back, Taksin always the power behind PT, e.g. Daughter made leader of the party. Number 1 party objective win election form govt/PM give Taksin get out of jail free card. Problem, PT didnt win, cant get MFP to agree to PT number 1 objective, solution, form a majority without MFP, problem solved. What about the will of the people? What's that in Thai politics?

Thaksin’s popularity has waned with unexpected seats loss in traditionally strongholds in the North and North East. The losses in party lists are also significant. Thaksin has acknowledged that MFP has better policies and personalities. I don’t think he can do much for the party and he has thrown in the towel for politics.
 

He has talk about returning before the election. I think he is determined to return and enter the legal process. MFP wining the election and forming the government will deflect a lot of accusation of collusion for his return if PTP is to be the government.

 

He know that he will be returning with Prayut still the caretaker government. Lots of bad blood between them but not sure Prayut still have the appetite to go after Thaksin. In fact, I don’t see the yellow shirts have the appetite to demonstrate in numbers. So it will left to be seen, how the authority will handle his return in accordance to the legal process. He keep saying about waiting for permission. Think that is a cryptic message.

He could do exactly the same thing in poorer parts of Thailand and be just as popular? Remember that Thailand's still a relatively poor country. Part of why he was so unpopular with some in Thailand was because he was seen to be a champion of the poor?

Only the land case has expired. Others convictions tallied more than 10 years and there are also pending cases. Good point why the “boss” got away with their corruptions and seizing power from a legit elected government.

I don't think "Boss" has ever been sentenced to anything has he?

 

The statute of limitations applies to charging him and bringing him to trial.

 

Thaksin was brought to trial and found guilty so as far as I am aware, he still has to serve his time, there are no statute of limitations once you've been convicted.

 

(At least that's the way I understand it).

I've often had the same thought.  The thing is, super rich people aren't rich because they're such good people and want to help others.  They're rich because they want to be rich, to have business empires, to have huge amounts of wealth.  They reach the point where they could provide a good life for them and their families, but they keep going because they want more money, more than they could possibly spend. 

 

The chances are he simply wouldn't get the same feeling some people would from helping others.  ????‍♂️

In answering a question, Pita said former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has the right to return to Thailand from his exile and given a fair legal trial.
