The disturbing part of this story is that the police gave the rider's name and nationality to the Phuket Express to publish.

People ride the wrong way on one-streets all day long everywhere in Thailand, but I must say, his riding was a step too far as far as wrong way riding is concerned LOL. Normally they do it when there's plenty of clearance.

I'd like to thank all the Thais who ride on sidewalks and go wrong way all the time for likely saving my life...after surviving in Thailand i never ever ever cross a street or make a turn or anything similar without looking both ways 3 times...came in handy a few times in usa where running red lights and stop signs is a daily occurrence.  Thailand, if you survive, prepares you well for other countries.

Or it was 'Driving against traffic'' at 2,000 Baht and 500 Baht for something else?

Could be a number of charges as well

wrong way

No helmet

dangerous driving/ without due care/a danger to others

Ignoring a road sign

No license

No tax .+=

No insurance.

The interesting thing is that he got ticketed and paid at the cop shop.

In a market area near me there is a one-way road, and my observation while waiting there is that at least one vehicle, usually a motorcycle, every minute drives by going the wrong way. And that is a very conservative estimate. Probably close to 100 an hour. It's crowded with little space and people and other vehicles often have to squeeze by those going the wrong way. But they are Thai so it's allowed (ignored). The vital rule in Thailand is to always, always look both ways when crossing a one-way street.
