Thailand’s Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has denied posting derogatory comments about westerners on Twitter.

According to the BBC’s Southeast Asia Correspondent, Jonathan Head, Anutin said he didn’t post the comments and doesn’t know who did.

It was also claimed that the Twitter profile had been run by a member of Anutin’s staff and not Anutin himself.

Anutin also said he has no negative feelings towards westerners and is focussing all his efforts on tackling COVID-19.

Anutin stressed that the authorities are being completely transparent with regard to the number of cases officially reported in Thailand.

Earlier this week, a Twitter account in the name of the health minister posted derogatory comments about westerners in Thailand.

The Tweet, which has since been deleted, along with the Twitter profile, called "farangs" dirty people who don't shower and blamed them for fleeing Europe and coming to Thailand potentially spreading the COVID-19 virus.

He also urged people to avoid foreigners as "not a single one was wearing a mask".

The controversial Tweet came a month after he launched a similar attack on foreigners in Bangkok who refused his offer of a free mask.

Speaking to Thai media, Anutin, called on foreigners who don’t wear face masks “to be kicked out of Thailand”.

He later apologised to Thai media for losing his temper.

The news comes as Thailand continues to battle against the spread of COVID-19 - a battle that according to the relatively low number of cases officially reported, suggests Thailand is winning.

While the number of cases in countries such as South Korea (8,086), United States (2,174), Italy (17,660), Spain (4,231), France (3,661), Germany (3,062), Sweden (775) and the United Kingdom (707) have surged rapidly in recent weeks, the number of confirmed infections in Thailand stands at 82, with 35 of those having already made a full recovery. 46 patients remain in hospital and there has been one death from coronavirus in Thailand.

*Stats on number of cases from European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and TAT via Ministry of Public Health - correct as of 14 March 2020.

  • So, if I write really mean and nasty <deleted> in this forum, then delete my account, it didn't happen, right?

  • That's nice; guaranteed it's not reciprocated

So, Trump bans UK travellers, a place 200% safer than the USA by diagnosed cases ?

Cannot hope that the entire world bans USA travellers when they hit 10,000 !

I think he's getting worried because Thai people are angry with what he said and are starting to circulate his quotes and picture mocking him for his racist remarks.

Not really, famous/powerful people tend to have staff running their social media.

Anutin you make me want to puke!!

When you open your mouth its just lies & B/S that comes out.

Why are you hiding the real numbers of Coronavirus in Thailand????????

Well, Norway with a population of barely 5 million has over 1100 cases officially and has said they stopped testing people 3 days ago that are not in critical condition, risk groups and important work groups, admitting the numbers of infected to be far higher than the official numbers.

Ok, was not him.

Any reason why he has not filed charges with police to find and arrest someone who is impersonating him ?

Any reason why computer crime division has not gone into action to find who is responsible for spreading fake news and hate speech?
