I don't know a single school that has 100% of their foreign teachers all legally working on work permits

It is interesting that as the crackdown on foreign teachers took hold a few years back how Thailands standings in English ability began to steadily fall. There is an ignorance at the top of the ladder

  • If they are working without permits then there is obviously a demand for their services. Why not give them permits? Surely improving English standards would be beneficial for Thailand and it

  • Keep diggin yer own grave, Thailand.   You are about as attractive a destination to the average westerner now as Syria.

Check out government schools and EP programs. While some might fudge. most have been all legal for decades. Yes, its true.

Of course if they really wanted to sort the problem they would simply fine the schools rather than the teacher. Don't think its ever happened has it!? Strange.

Well that will do Thai English skills a real boost, really make teachers want to come here to help them not, wish this lot would wake up to the real world one day...

I am British and I would never work here again as  teacher  even for 200k. All the Brit Headteachers in the International Schools are nasty bullies... Who have never taught in the UK or if they did where never gualified. 555

Yes true but their pay has been decreased for 90k a month down nothing so why would you bother to work here.

Based on your logic, if there is a high demand for dentists, everyone should be able to be a dentist.

Looks like that in my area.

It shows there is a demand for cheap English teachers.

Cheap English teachers don’t improve English standards.

There’s a reason why work permits come with certain requirements.

If you remember the Thai PM - in one of his amazing predictions - predicted that Thai would be the number one language spoken in the world one day. So, really the world should be learning Thai to improve the economy.

Why not make the schools responsible? If they want to employ someone as a teacher then make them (the school) apply for the work permit. Surely if they think that is the person for them and they are happy to employ that person then the choice should be theirs and not the government.

Yes indeed .....but teaching requires also skills and it is not enough to have English as mother tongue to qualify as a teacher

How is it that Thailand is able to announce new programs with conflicting priorities on an almost daily basis. This morning's newspaper carried an article that there was a new initiative to improve English among students....the plan is to train the teachers better, who will then teach the kids better. OK, I'll go along with that although the details will contain hundreds of thousands of errors.

Now this article in which the Labour Ministry announce are going to crack dow on foreign teachers, the vast majority are here to teach English. If you round all the teachers with improper documents you just might be able to blame the anticipated poor result of the teaching English to English teacher on the crackdown of foreign teachers.....now that is what I call forward planning.

Hopefully foreign leader will take notice how elite and forward thinking Thai politicians are.

The kingdom is under severe attack from farang worker leaching off the Thai society. This has to stop now.

Kick the farangs OUT.

Yes its very important, thats why there are minimum standards and permits for who can teach.

I can speak about my proficiency in English, however concerning dentistry, I will keep my mouth shut.

I though it was because the PI teachers were cheap.

Don't they get their rounds in like everyone else?!

Some would argue that may not be entirely accurate and the majority are in fact teaching mainly to stay in Thailand.

The thing is, i don't think that the majority of these English teachers are properly qualified teachers. Just being a native speaker alone does not make someone a good teacher.
Secondly i believe that the reason why most don't have a work permit is due to the fact that they are required  to hold a degree in order for them to apply for one, which many of them don't have. But the blame really should be shifted to the schools for hiring these so called teachers in the first place...

In a perfect world English language should be taught by native English speakers, and NOT Scottish, Welsh, Irish, and especially Geordies, who even the English cannot understand, but let’s face it, the powers that be do not want their subjects to learn ????

Knowing English and teaching English are two different things. Many people think that if they know English, they can teach English which is wrong.

Many students in Thailand end up not understanding what the native teacher said because the teacher just can't teach to second language learners.

I've seen many native teachers teaching like the students are first language learners back home.

A good teacher should apply for non-O visa first and not go in as a tourist.

Stop dubbing foreign movies first..let people get used to listen english and maybe they learn too

Another brutal Crackdown - dont worry all you illegal workers - it will be forgotten in 5 days time and everyone will be onto the next Crackdown ????

As, one imagines, will anyone on whom you may attempt to operate!

Try working in Australia without the correct permit. Illegal is illegal here as it is there.

You are so right. However, I do not believe it is ignorance at all. It´s not humanly possible to be that stupid! I believe it is that the ruling elite, does not see it as beneficial for their economical profit to educate the grass roots. That´s also why they take most of the teachers from the Philippines, even as they know studies and test already proven their language skills are worse than in Thailand.

Can't agree with that last statement. All the Philippians I have known, both here and in the UK, have spoken very good English.
