Thailand on Saturday (May 29) reported 4,803 new COVID-19 cases and 34 additional deaths.

● 2,101 new infections
● 2,702 prison / prison infections
 
Saturday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 149,779 with 988 deaths.

 

The news comes as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha reassured all Thais that they will be inoculated with COVID-19 vaccines this year.

Not so good...but 60% are prison cases so easier to contain.

Thailand on Saturday reported its third highest daily total ever of new COVID cases at 4,803, a tally largely driven by bulk reporting of 2,702 new infections among prison inmates, bringing the nation’s cumulative total of COVID prison infections to more than 22,000.

 

Saturday’s report, which also included a basically flatline number of 2,101 new cases in the general population and 34 new deaths, brought the nation’s COVID totals since the start of the pandemic to nearly 150,000 cases (149,779) and nearly 1,000 deaths (988).

 

The only higher total new COVID case counts Thailand had experienced since the start of the pandemic also were driven by bulk reporting of prison cases – a total of 9,635 cases with 6,853 from prisons on May 17, and 4,887 cases with 2,835 from prisons on May 13.

 

Representing Saturday’s newly reported 2,702 prison infections as a single day total is somewhat misleading though, because in fact, the prison cases reported by the Ministry of Public Health on Saturday had been previously reported by corrections officials, but not yet by MoPH, over the past two days.

 

Whereas the Ministry of Public Health has been relatively timely in reporting new COVID cases found among the general public, Thailand’s corrections officials thus far in the pandemic have tended to combine days or weeks of test results and then bulk report them on single days, skewing the daily reporting statistics.

 

The 2,101 new general population COVID cases reported Saturday was a decline of 364 from the 2,465 reported the prior day, but remained within the 2,000+ new daily cases range that has been common for Thailand since the start of May. Thailand’s single day peak of general population cases was 2,922 on May 23.

 

The new cases reported on Saturday also added to Thailand’s new record population of 46,480 COVID positive cases being held in mandatory quarantine in various kinds of hospital facilities. As of Saturday, 1,221 (-5) of those were listed in critical condition, and 406 (+1) of those were requiring ventilators to breathe.

 

I'm looking forward to the university that publishes the study "how not to handle a new year holiday during a global pandemic". Let's hope it names and shames.

Why is it useful to look at biweekly changes in confirmed cases?

 

For all global data sources on the pandemic, daily data does not necessarily refer to the number of new confirmed cases on that day – but to the cases reported on that day.

Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day – irrespectively of any actual variation of cases – it is helpful to look at a longer time span that is less affected by the daily variation in reporting. This provides a clearer picture of where the pandemic is accelerating, staying the same, or reducing.

Not the point. These people have covid. The authorities should have been on top of this from the very beginning last year. They need to test each and every prisoner not just for a positive or negative result but also for antibodies. How there appears to be no spread from the prisons to the outside community is an interesting question.

Yes a little to close, what happened to social distancing. Maybe they will put plastic barriers up between bunks.

Majority of cases from the prison population . Hope is in sight for the inmates . The Thai Government has allocated 300 million baht to tackle the covid infection rate in prisons . approximately   300,000 inmates in total . 1000 baht to each prisoner should make a difference .

But then how do you explain the still relatively low numbers of cases and deaths?  Surely the disastrous handling of the crisis in countries like the UK, USA, Italy, India, Brazil are far more worthy of study of what not to do.

Cheap is when you treat the whole country like a migrant worker camp and rely on natural herd immunity to solve the problem with some window dressing.

Why there are every day, for a month now, the same number of new cases, excluding the inmates, I think doesn't need any further explanation as it is too obvious.

Yea maybe but we're on a Thai forum and the thread is about cases here not abroad. If we were on a forum in the UK, USA, Italy India or Brazil then you'd have a valid point.

Again with this arguement. Fairly obvious to all but the stupid that the countries you list monumentally messed up their initial approach to this pandemic. Some have done much better since. India allowed a huge festival in a country of 1.4 billion. Bolsanaro called it the flu as did Trump. Low numbers here I believe is more due to people wearing masks than anything the govt is doing. The govt that has let this virus run. The initial lockdown appeared to work. Not cracking down after the Thong Lor spread and allowing Songkran clearly hasn't.

You could well be right.  But I think social media would be ablaze if people were dying in their thousands every day.  I really don't think it could be concealed.

Obviously it hasn't worked perfectly, but how do you explain the relatively low numbers.  Surely by now a huge rise in infections and deaths post-Songkran would have been seen?

People die in this country - cause of death is generally not investigated or verified by a doctor unless the person was in a hospital - get the western head off - this is Thailand.

The myth of the Songkran spread is not dead yet.

 

The number of cases spread to the provinces during Songkran was tiny. And there were cases throughout the provinces before Songkran.
