Are Pfizer shots the cure for Thailand’s COVID crisis?

Featured Replies

By Thai PBS World’s General Desk

Despite being the most talked about and sought-after vaccine in Thailand, not a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech has been administered here to date. The Pfizer jab’s efficacy is impressively high thanks to its innovative mRNA technology.

Unsurprisingly, calls for mRNA vaccines to be made available are growing louder in Thailand. Adding to the sense of urgency is the Delta variant, which has pushed the country’s daily COVID-19 count close to 100 deaths and close to 10,000 cases.

This ongoing wave is rising fast despite last month’s launch of mass vaccination. Hence, many Thais believe Pfizer jabs are the only way the country can escape its COVID-19 nightmare.

Forget Pfizer. Why wasn't Moderna brought in for mass distribution, instead of relying on Pfizer? Why was Moderna left to be an "alternative" vaccine, held up from being purchased for months. Thailand

Thailand could have had Moderna much faster and more easily than Pfizer, which, as the article states, is yet to arrive--even the gifted donations. It all makes no sense. You get equal coverage from Moderna plus Moderna's storage and distribution is more viable than Pfizer.

Blame the disappeared Pfizer on the US. The US apparently put no verifiable restrictions on its donation, which very well might fall down into the vortex.

These important decisions are made  autocratically  by the only one that matters in the Thailand system of governance. There are no explanations  required.

Wait. Wut?

U.S. Embassy staff, family and friends got Pfizer close to three months ago.

Am guessing other doses have been administered as well.

Everyone can Google this headline on the BK Post website dated May 6th ---> Pfizer jab not here yet: FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has dismissed a claim made online by ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in which he said the Pfizer vaccine was already in Thailand for emergency and exclusive use among a certain group of people.

Seems someone is "LYING"....

No more than any other.  The point is there aren't enough vaccines end of.  And the roll out has been dismal.

To quote Homer Simpson: Duh!

Why no Pfizer/Moderna?  I think we all know why.

Why has Pfizer not been approved for use yet in Thailand. Sinopharm was done in record time...4 days wasn't it and over a weekend?

I think you will find it's something to do with the pricing per dose.

If they stood up en-masse and got a different leader they might get some.

There is no cure. The vaccine only helps you if you are infected with covid.

The symptoms are less and you ll live. You are vaccinated, but you still can have covid and get sick.

Many cases like this already.

Now you can also have ALL the types of covid at the same time.

Cases known, also recently in Thailand. You can have the a-virus, but at the same time one of the other letter virus(b,c,d), English, African, Indian virus. Or any other combination then.

Last week i red they were trying to make a MEDICINE against covid, first i ever red about that.

Killing the virus is with alcohol or UV-c light. There are "robots" made for it. As humans we cant cope with UV-c light. Of course they cost a lot, but i think they dont have to cost that much. It s just an electric car with the lights on it, remote controlled. But ok it s developed in crisis time, so it cost you.

Unless we havent killed all viruses, or they died as they are outside a host, we will have covid for longer time. In mean time it showed the virus is mutating every time and we may hope the vaccine is working for all and you dont die on it. Hope not all letters in alphabet will be used and eventually the virus goes down.

I think still important is to keep distance. Maybe also stop talking too much. The virus is in your spit and can travel even 6 metres. Be aware where your hands are and clean them regularry. You are wise enough and you were taught by your parents once. Well i was.

We opened here and within 2 weeks time we went from 500 cases/day to 7000. D-virus .

But ok England already went up to 32000 and they also opened. You could see in final EC, 60000 people packed together, most English and Italians. New outbreak again in EU?

Not really. Chinese made Sinopharm (I know it's not the same as Sinovac) turned out to be the most expensive vaccine compared to all the rest eg. Pfizer, Moderna, Sputnik, AZ, JnJ. (data is based on hungarian state media)

It's hard to tell the real price for each vaccine, since this data is pretty confidential.

1,

Thailand however is a different story. Why Sinovac was approved and purchased first? It might have samthing to do with a fact that CP group (Thai Giant) is a 15% stakeholder in Sinovac.

2, Siam Bio who supposed to be producing AStra Zeneca locally is owned by guess who?

Why would you purchase or approve dirty farang vaccines and pay the fair market price, if you could keep all this money in the inner circle?

Yes.  Pfizer and Moderna and J&J.  Anything but what we now have.

I've got a vision of ropes tied around the poor nag and it being hauled up a wooden ramp.

Cute but as the US donated vaccine was reported to be donated through the World Health Organization, putting the blame on the US is misplaced.

Actually the Biontech Pfizer vaccine was approved by Thailand on June 23rd.

75% of the donation is through COVAX.  25%......."will be sent directly to countries experiencing surges, including Canada, Mexico, India and South Korea."

Thailand is experiencing a surge; it could have been sent directly, particularly as Thailand is not signed up to COVAX and therefore isn't the "donation" (Through COVAX) therefore a loan to be repaid in kind? I'm sure I read that vaccines need to be returned to COVAX when able to.

Oh! Thanks.

As I have said in other topics Pfizer is at the bottom of my list because of the irrational temperature control needed if you want to get it in Thailand. Not to mention myocarditis and pericarditis.

I was under the impression that 20% of the donated vaccines were to be given to eligible American expats, or was that something else ?

Your source and date. Thailand certainly is experiencing a surge, as is the US. I am an American Expat, out priced in my own country for retirement and am very aware of my country’s shortcomings, however … I also recognize when something is done consistent with the ideals of helping others.

Those parameters have long since been eased. Now the Pfizer vaccine can be stored at temperatures attainable by a home freezer. And can be stored in the refrigerator at temperatures ranging from 2 degrees Celsius to 8 degrees Celsius for up to 1 month.

As most are aware, many things have been “said”. I am thinking the source of such statements is critical. As an American Expat, I’ll let you know if I am contacted by the Embassy. Over 70 and under care of my Cardiologist … no news yet.
