Where would you choose to be for the next 12 months? If you could be Whisked Off on a Magic Carpet, all expenses paid, Where would you Be?

Recently, during these Delta Covid times, I have found myself dreaming about places I might like to be during the next 12 months. I now dream of being on Ellesmere Island, 80 Degrees North, for example. Just me and the internet and a small telescope.

Ellesmere Island is not so easy to get to, without a magic carpet.  And, the internet there cannot be accessed without a satellite connection, is my guess.

Checking Wikipedia, there are about 191 people living on Ellesmere Island. I have dreamed of someday going to Ellesmere, off and on, since I was young, back when no one, other than Peary caribou, even knew this island existed.

Beginning January of 2020, I have been dealing with life in Thailand under various lockdowns, quite well.  And, I have been blessed at being here in Thailand, for sure.  I have no complaints, whatsoever, or extremely few, at least.

However, these days, the drum roll of cases and variants continues without letup.  And now, I am beginning to dream of life on Ellesmere Island, just as I once did in my youth.

So, what about most of us. Do almost all of us feel rather the same, given our similar and common circumstances, while living under pandemic conditions? Do we each have our own Ellesmere Islands that we periodically fantasize about visiting during our lockdown days?

Do we similarly dream about beautiful places, less populated, where there is plenty of natural beauty, and almost no news, and no potential scaremongering?

Ellesmere Island is a beautiful place. I just wish I could find one amenable and happy go lucky soul on ThaiVisa to travel with me to Ellesmere Island, by Magic Carpet. Once there, we could glory in the beauty of the place, under the stars with no pollution, and in a desert environment in which breathing would be easy, and not so full of risk.

Take a look at the image below this text, and you will see what I mean.

Otherwise, what is the place you dream about being whisked off to in your moments of daydreaming, day after day?

No worries, of course, because, after the virus has been conquered, we can always return to Thailand, in our dreams.

Am I allowed to change the magic carpet to an airplane , its just I am afraid of heights and I think I could easily fall off a magic carpet.......even if it seat belts.  ???? thank you.

  • I'd stay in Bangkok, if only because I wouldn't want to miss the reopening, which will be spectacular.

  • The reopening. Two coups and five years later.    ????

Little island size of a cricket pitch, Just outside Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Hideaway Island.

Closest to heaven I have ever been and I have been there many times.

Awesome place, lovely people. (Mostly!)

Seriously could do a Tom Hanks survival here in luxury.

What will improve in 12 months? The virus is not going away. I am vaccinated and have passed 17 or 18 PCR tests. Stop the nonsense and open international  travel with digital health passports and depending on the country preflight and post flight PCR testing and contact tracing.

I have never been anywhere I wanted to stay 12 months straight. I follow the seasons, and my whims.

12 months of RVing the US would make up for the 6 months planned for last year + 6 months, hopefully, for the next trip....

Initially Oregon & Washington + taking an Alaskan cruise, then working through to the Dakotas & Yellowstone,  then meandering southwards exploring some of the old indian settlements & Utah taking our own sweet time....The wife wants to see Graceland so that, then seeing family in Texas &  Florida....

Our own time and itinerary....

I'm actually pretty content with where I'm at in the US right now.  Seems like the whole world is a mess at present.

I'm actually quite happy where I am right now (Luang Prabang in north Laos).  But if I were able to be whisked away for a 'break', then I'd choose the Pyrenean mountains, where I used to live way back in the 90's.

I dont mind being here nowhere else i would want to be. Maybe the French island of Reunion and do some shark fishing.

Still i hate moving around I certainly would not want to be back in the Netherlands.

I can survive pretty ok in BKK, pool available home gym so most things are ok. Would feel better if i was vaccinated though.

interesting subject and some interesting responses.. I am losing days of my life to the virus and losing hope that the mutations will not outpace the vax... but I am pretty content here at the moment as we have a nice spot... though the idea of being able to carpet to other locales for a while is charming...

Maybe this paragraph from a favorite work of fiction captures some old dreams from my early days...

"... I sit on the couch in front of the TV and think about going away to a quiet beach somewhere. It’s not a beach you can find today. It’s a beach from two- hundred-years ago, a beach in the South Pacific, a Melville atoll. The air is thick with salt, filling my senses as I inhale the warm breeze that drifts off the ocean, coating the atmosphere in a timeless, humid haze. Brown-skinned ladies with athletic bodies and gleaming white teeth that sparkle in the sunshine swim out to meet our boat. I am a champion daydreamer. Walter Mitty has nothing on me."

Soi Cowboy please. Not too interested in the magic carpet as I get half price senior rate on the sky train, but help with the expenses would be useful.

Actually, just waiting to be vaxed, then I can book the big magic carpet for the family to go to the snow at Mount Perisher NSW Australia, i.e. if they lift the 14 days quarantine as well.

As you can see, I don't dream, I plan and execute.

Skiing is all about the beautiful execution.
