Death of trespasser: Swiss man's Thai wife was having affair with victim, say family

Further lurid details have emerged in the case of Rudolf J.R. , 63, the Swiss pensioner who attacked and killed an intruder at his home who was armed with a gun.

He fought with Sathian, 53, got the gun and knocked him unconscious then tied him up.

But Sathian died in a kitchen behind the Swiss man's house.

It was originally thought that the motive was robbery but this has now been dismissed as nonsense by relatives of the deceased.

He had been having a sexual relationship with the Swiss man's wife for years and was in fact loaded with cash after she gave him money and he sold land.

In earlier reports the wife had admitted to knowing Sathian and drinking with him but said they were just friends.

Sanook went to Udon to get the latest and published two stories.

In the first they reported that Lak Sariroop, 44, had gone to the local police to bail out Rudolf for 300,000 baht.

He faces a charge of assault causing death.

Conditions of bail are that he stays in the area and doesn't try to flee abroad.

Lak told the media she had had the monks round to the house to hold a ceremony to assuage bad karma as a person had died there.

She said she had apologized to Sathian's family but said that she was drunk and asleep when the incident happened. When she woke up she thought he was just unconscious.

Reporters went to Phen where the cremation was being held and spoke to his mother Khan, 74, who said that all the locals and relatives knew that the "mia farang" (foreigner's wife) was carrying on with her son behind his back.

It had been going on for 2 - 3 years.

Three or four times he had brought her to her house to pay her respects and they had slept togther in a shack in the fields.

She claimed he had already got 40,000 baht from her and didn't go to the house to rob the Swiss man but that she had phoned him up to get him to go over to see her.

She wanted the news corrected denying that her departed son was a thief.

An uncle of the victim called Thaworn, 65, said that Sathian had a wife and children and had split up with his wife because of the farang's wife.

He described Sathian as a playboy. He bought the gun second hand a year ago and had just sold two rai of land for 500,000 baht and had no need of money.

In the other article Sanook spoke to the ex wife of Sathian called Noothian who came from Chiang Rai to attend the cremation.

She said she had been married to Sathian for 30 years and they had two children and had lived very happily.

Until a few years ago when he struck up a relationship with the Swiss man's wife.

She said that he had asked "Can I have you both? She said "no, you have to choose".

He chose the "mia farang".

She finally had enough in February of this year and moved away.

She reiterated that there was no way this was an attempt to steal. She said that her ex had 290,000 baht in cash on his person after the sale of one rai of land to a relative.

She claimed that money was now missing.

Sanook then headed for the foreigner's house where he was walking outside. He waved the reporters away and scurried inside refusing to talk.

On Monday suspecting that the latest revelations were in fact the case ASEAN NOW had attempted to contact the wife of the Swiss man online but had received no answer.

What is believed to be her Facebook page has a happy picture of him and her in hammocks though posts are infrequent and there is no mention of him.

Calling BS on this !!!! - lying family in attempt to try and get money.

That said, as many posters mentioned in the ‘original thread’ - it does seem that the Wife and diseased were having an affair - Did the Swiss man know ? (they often say the partner is the last to know).

BUT... It has been admitted by the family that the deceased owned the gun - WHY did he take the gun to the Swiss mans house ????

IF they are admitting there was no reason (or attempt) to steal... What was the deceased doing at the house with a gun ?????

Was the deceased going to the house for a bit of ‘nookie’ after he received a phone call from the wife (as the family claimed) - Phone records will prove that - but why take a gun ????

Now that ownership of the Gun has been made - the self defence claim of the Swiss man seems more firm.

And the gun was obviously drawn on him, a round fired. Seems to make sense.

Even if the Thai man was having an affair with the wife (which is sounding like a strong possibility now), he should not have jumped the wall, late at night, waiving a gun in the Swiss man's face saying "Money! Money!."

The wife has a lot of explaining to do to her husband, the police and the Thai man's family.

Did he say "money , money"  or mean  'Maa Nee , Maa Nee' - come here?

I can't wait for further instalments from this ripping yarn.

It has now been reported that the deceased guy was invited to the house , so its questionable as to whether he jumped over the wall and highly unlikely that he demanded any money

From the looks pf it , more than two. As said my other, why was he at the foreigners house? and why did he have a loaded gun with him?

In the end it seems that the story resumes that the wife had a brother who in addition to having sex with his "sister" wanted money from the stupid farang who did not pay him enough to have sex with his wife called sister.

The first rule in Thailand is to always check and re check the brother of .....

I hope that the Swiss Embassy gets involved in this to make sure that the Swiss guy doesn't get railroaded for defending himself and his property because this sounds potentially unjust to me. Fair enough that they need to make sure this hasn't been a murder of passion over the wife's affair. I can see that this isn't a simple case of robber jumps the fence.

Assume innocent unless proven guilty would be appreciated by the Swiss guy I'm sure.

The crime seems to be: being farang while being attacked by Thai man with gun". Obviously a law that fits in every country.

Why? Have you committed an offense? Even the RTP are clever enough to provide their Immigration branch with details of a detainees passport.

So the story gets twisted Thai style.

The wife has a boy-friend who jumps the fence and threatens the Swiss farang with a deadly weapon - a revolver.  The Swiss farang defends himself, disarms the attacker, and ties him up for the police.  Attacker dies.  Swiss farang is now a terrible person deserving of jail and whatever hell the Thai legal system can throw at him while cheered on by the attacker's family and the Thai public.  He's obviously a guilty bad-man because his wife and the attacker were screwing behind his back and ripping off his wealth.  So the entire affair is the Swiss farang's fault and he should be thrown into a prison for the rest of his life - or pay the family his life savings.  Anyway you cut it, the Swiss farang is guilty as hell and the authorities will find something to pin on him in the name of "justice."
Does that sound about right?  Yeah?
Why do I think he was the only victim?

Are security cams legal in Thailand? (I assume yes). In this case it would've made a world of difference in proving his innocence (or guilt). Sadly even if he is innocent - his chances of walking away from this are slim. In a normal country if a man walks into your property with a loaded gun it's pretty much self-defense by default, but TIT and he's a foreigner.

If you apply Thai-logic to the whole thing, the Farang guy could very easy end up in jail and with nothing left, when this is over.

No matter what really happened.

I think the crime started earlier than that - buying a house and marrying the type of woman who'd bang other men behind his back. She's obviously exactly the type of woman who'd ruin his life, one way or another.

The deceased guy had just received a 400 000 Baht cash from a land sale , maybe he carried the gun everywhere for protection just in case someone tried to steal his money

Yeah, we have them all around the house.  Only good for after the fact, but they do leave a visual record of events.

He carries 400,000baht around everywhere? Right.

No, but the robbers may take him to the location of where the money was kept

Although legally licensed firearms as more common than you'd think in Thailand, a conceal carry permit is not.  Most firearms are for home defense.  Carrying a firearm in public is a serious offense.

Reason why I got security cams all over my house (inside and out). I want to be able to protect myself if ever any problems.

Installed after my now former lazy bipolar 24 year old step-son punched me in the face in my house, when I asked him to clean his room.

Of course he lied and claimed self-defense, which could have resulted in trouble for me, had I punched him back. Thank god I did not do that.

Now should he ever turn up again, I can beat the <deleted> out of him, without worries.

How about this :

The deceased has been reported to have received 40 000 Baht from the Wife , maybe that was a loan and the Swiss guy wanted the money back .

The deceased had sold his land and went to the guys house to return the money ?

As we all know, the truth has little or no value in Thailand.
