Proposal to legalise porn in Thailand suffers setback

A proposal to legalise pornography in Thailand has suffered a major setback.

On Friday, the country’s MPs were warned that by supporting the proposal they could be in breach of the ethical code for all members of parliament.

Sonthiya Sawasdee from Thailand’s House committee on law, justice and human rights said he will submit a formal letter to parliament president Chuan Leekpai to oppose the proposal.

The proposal would see legislators amend Section 287 of the country’s Criminal Code, which prohibits the trade, distribution or advertising of obscene material.

People found in breach of Section 287 face fines of up to 6,000 baht and/or up to three years in jail.

However, Mr Sonthiya warned that any MP who supports the proposal could be in breach of parliamentary ethics.

The move to legalise pornography was brought about earlier this month by a group of content creators who said that Section 287 prevents them from legally earning money from sexual or adult content.

The group said the existing law prevents people from being free to choose what they do with their own bodies.

The group are calling for pornography, along with sex toys, to be legalise and the industry regulated by the Ministries of Culture and Public Health.

Just have to wait until those in power work out how they can make mullions out of it, then like cannabis it will suddenly be OK

Thailand has no room for smut... after all it is a pious, devout, pure, reverent,  Buddha fearing people where all women are fully covered and men don't look at them, and what with the bars parlors and brothels and every abomination in between you ask? good question...

What a circus of hypocrisy.
I feel sad. Maybe I shall go console myself by inviting a couple of girls from Patong to a movie night using a VPN with a boat load of booze I can't buy from a bar, followed by high quality conversation into the small hours.

Sounds like a plan.

Good point.

Something similar could be said about Victorian England.

I presume that a Rule-Book has been written on "Thai Parliamentary-Ethics".

And I presume that Mr Sonthiya is a Lawyer.

--  If he is, then I would have expected that he would *know* whether or not an MP's support for the Proposal is in breach of Parliamentary-Ethics.

But MP's not having to declare criminal backgrounds, where their money comes from etc is not a problem.

Protect the soapy and vip hostess pub culture.

Poor guys just need a Delete.

What a different world it would be if "ethical code" was always followed rigorously!

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind also.  I don't think the holdup has anything to do with ethics.  I suspect that the reason witnesses have not been asked to come forward is that no one in parliament will bar fine them out.

I could be quite embarrassing if some of the witnesses actually recognised and found they were on a first name basis with some honorable members of parliament.

Perhaps a flight of fancy but I can just imagine "HI POOPSIE" ringing across the hallowed halls of justice.

Thailand as a whole,...

even as a hole ...

is suffering a setback.

It won't get better until there is political change of vulcanic proportions, .... and that's a long way off.

I was going to Photoshop a yellow shirt onto this chick, but will leave that to your imaginations. Cheers.

Parliament serves no independent function in a military dictatorship. Why does it exist. Threatening MPs who are already unelected, docile and compliant with criminal action if they vote differently than the executive demands is a loss of face for the MP, for Parliament and what's more a humiliation for the Thai people

Parliament has ethics... I never knew that.

Seems strange that you can't watch at home what you can easily go out and buy on the street.

Is being a convicted drug smuggler not a breach of parliamentary ethics?

So, MPs can't debate anything that Mr Sonthiya disagrees with as it would be breach of parliamentary ethics? Can he show the public the relevant section of the law that supports his hypothesis? Would it be against the 'parliamentary ethics' (a classic example of an oxymoron) if MPs debated whether he should be removed from his post?

The ridiculous gets more ridiculous.

Simple rule: everything visible is forebidden. Why do you think Thai cars have blackened windows?

Simple rule: everyrhing that goes against make-believe ethics is forbidden, but don't look behind the screens.

Same same government/corporate ethics.

Contradiction of terms.

Ironic in a country where you can rent a "sex toy" in all but the tiniest villages - and I'm not sure about them.
