Phuket: 3,000 - 4,000 tourists arriving daily - about 20-30 with Omicron

Dr Kusak Kukiatkul of the Phuket health authority told Thai business media that around 3-4,000 foreign tourists were arriving in Phuket daily.

He admitted that Covid-19 cases detected among them were on the rise but still only 0.3% of arrivals.

At the moment there are about 20-30 cases of Omicron detected in Phuket daily.

So far the total is 92.

Checks on high risk areas like Bangla/Patong indicated relatively low instances of infection.

As I stated in another post, I don't believe the stats.............as an example, if the owner of a large bar in Bangla, who is supposed to regularly test his staff, finds one who is Covid/Omicron positive, do you really think they are going to report it to the authorities and risk being closed down and losing whatever income they were getting??

OR, do they send the positive staff member home and carry on regardless (or if the staff member is a particularly good one, get them to wear a mask and just carry on)?

Food for thought.

Once you catch Covid - it takes a while to show itself in a test.

We have had guests be negative before they leave their home country, negative after the one day Test and Go but positive on day 5.

That is why Thailand has stopped the Test and Go - it is not long enough for quarantine.

Honestly do not see this as a valid argument. If its in Thailand already you need to be testing the entire populace every five days. The chances per head count of incoming tourists having covid after being vaccinated maybe 3 times and having 2 tests i think is far less than a random amount of thais in the public domain not taking any tests.

It's in Thailand already, and looking at how quickly it's spread in other countries there's nothing that can realistically be done to stop it. I'd suggest the vulnerable try to stay at home and avoid contact as much as possible and wait it out. Everyone else should just get on with their lives, it's silly to get terrified about a virus that causes symptoms similar to the common cold in most people. If the Gauteng experience is anything to go by, the worst will be over quite quickly, and then the vulnerable can come out of hiding.

If they only made quarantine free they would have many more tourist coming here and it would be safer for all.

So all the latest data (so called) is Phuket how come Samui never gets a mention are they  keeping it quite? as it stands Samui has many tourists arriving I take it the little island is completely free from Covid whatever the variant. i have to say the vaccine program is top notch.

So they are going positive on the plane or the paperwork isn’t being checked on departure

That headline is a disgrace - it makes it look like 20-30 tourists come in daily with omicron which sounds like a huge number of tourists spreading the plague.

The article says however that 20-30 are found in Phuket daily.

Certainly interesting to see you pointing out infection are up but not pointing out deaths have been falling for the past couple months

Agree with the previous variants such as delta but Omicron has changed the parameters to that and all estimates and studies say you develop symptoms in 3 days not the previous 5.

Spoke to a mate earlier who arrived on Samui yesterday and he said it’s dead?

So they’ve only been counting for about 4 days then? ????

Spot on.  You would think they might think about checking the numbers and math.  The 20-30 day does not equate to 92 total.  It is really hard to believe the numbers posted regarding COVID.  And this is unfortunate as it affects how I spend my time.  I just want to know the truth.

Bingo.

Plus is also begs the question, how much longer will sandbox be allowed to continue as it's likely some Omicroners will be slipping through the net.

Follow the evidence…

with 99% plus being negative with the 2 PCR tests, it didn’t make medical sense for those negative people to be in quarantine be it 5 or 7 days….

a totally unnecessary policy and         $ cost to the passenger

there is no evidence to justify other than gov fear

Maybe no testing in Samui no infections... that works.

I can't find the part of the announcement that says that everyone in an arriving plane with a passenger who tests positive for Covid has been quarantined.

I wonder why that's missing ????

Thailand may have an issue of greater dimensions….lets wait for Dr Yongs opinion about that in 4 months.

Most in Phuket who had two sinovac jabs were given AZ as the booster

So according to this wisdom, every person who comes into Thailand should be in quarantine for as log as it takes to make 100% sure they'are not infected? and do you really see tourists agree to it?...

I think we all know the answer to that question.

The Sandbox will remain open, as it did when cases on Phuket were rising in dramatic fashion earlier in the Year.

Now the " High Season " has all but been decimated, the need for a little Tourist money, and the even more important " face " will become even stronger.
