Omicron set to delay reopening of bars and pubs

Daily News Thai caption: Delay to opening pubs - bars

A key figure at the Thai Ministry of Public Healthy indicated yesterday that pubs, bars and nightlife entertainment were likely to remain shut after the middle of this month.

The sector was expected to open on January 16th but Dr Kiatphum Wongjarit indicated to Daily News that this is unlikely to happen.

Meetings are taking place today between the MoPH and the CCSA, Thailand's Covid-19 response committee.

Health Minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul had confirmed that the Test and Go scheme - suspended until today - will be delayed in restarting until the end of January.

On the matter of pubs and bars he said it had not been discussed but intimated somewhat cryptically  that infections in the sector would drive a decision.

The opening of Thailand's entertainment industry has already been put back from December with the sector warning of more permanent closures if they are unable to open in January, notes ASEAN NOW.

The emergence of the Omicron variant is the driver of the expected further delays.

Today's decision will be anxiously awaited with many tourists abroad also using it to inform their decision about whether to come to Thailand - or delay once again.

Hate to say it, but that might be wise..... even wonder if the current free for all in Pattaya needs to be addressed. Too many places seem to be getting infections and Banglamung infection numbers are a concern.

Bar staff had to be vaccinated  but their owners and managers, often covid cynics, anti mask and anti vax did not have to be vaccinated.

I got covid on New Years Eve after getting the Pfizer jabs last year.  Don't know what flavor because I self tested, not wanting to end up in a Gulag (or even a Stalag) by being officially tested by the local Commissars.

Anyway, I've done the right thing and stayed home like a good little Comrade and done my best to prevent myself from initiating the destruction of mankind.

Now day 5 or 6, a runny nose, the odd sneeze, healthy appetite, and restful unbroken sleep.  If I had to rate it against my worst case of influenza in about 1995 that laid me up for a fortnight and I lost 15kg in weight, the covid I'm experiencing doesn't even rate as a mild Cold.  I'm actually disappointed.

Only the ones I know, or heard talking.  The anti vax mob are vociferously  loud and self  righteous in their views. I certainly  did not see foreign bar owners setting an example in getting vaccinated or helping their staff get vaccinated. Did you?

And what % of bars would you guess this is for the whole of Pattaya?

I never checked nor do i know any people that are remotely interested in owning bars etc in this country.

The couple of examples I can think of have sadly since been infected nevertheless.

Friend was over for beers yesterday afternoon and he said massage shops were being closed again from Today.

Anyone heard about this ?

It's just a spring clean for the May Queen.

I wonder when the muppets will decide that Omicron is being spread by the swimming pools and beaches, and so they all need to be closed again? Plus ca change, etc.

On that basis bars won't open all 2022. Omicron is just getting started and will spread easily upto June at least.

That would seem to be the next step.  Followed by closure of restaurants except to takeaways.

Government officials like to "reset" things back to their last known position of maximum power and authority, a bit like system restore on Windows

Expecting to peak in Europe late January, early February..... I hope Thailand is not that far behind.

Sad really when Omicron symptoms are mostly those of the common cold (makes sense as they're both Corona viruses) and from what I can gather, the mortality rate is basically nil. (In fact, some are saying infection with Omicron is a good thing as it acts like a non-lethal live virus Covid-19 vaccine.)

I am hoping the situation in my more rural area is not impacted.... the smaller eateries tended to do their own thing.... but it will impact the bigger (and better) ones nearby.

I suspect bars and nightlife, particularly alcohol sales, will be looked at first.  Let's face it, looking at the headline, many bars and pubs are open now anyhow, so the 'reopening' date is a moot point!

Omicron set to delay reopening of bars and pubs.

Rubbish.

It is the old, fearful medicine men who have been pursuing the policy of scare tactics for many, many months and are responsible for it. How many of the population are actually infected with Omikron and how much of them have already recovered from a C19 virus infection, they don't even know.

The ability of those responsible to judge a complex situation in a balanced way with the data from the past is obviously not there.

No, the continued ignorant bureaucratic embeciles in government are the driver for further delays and causing businesses to shut down permanently, all part of the bigger plan.

Blame it on the virus, any virus, take your pick, oh that's right, Omicron this time, what will the next one be ?

you got Covid and you didn't tell anyone     ?

Was in USA to  visit family. The wife and I received our first jab of Moderna Nov 1, second jab Nov 29.We were both fully vaccinated with one of the strongest Vaccines we know of. We both wore our mask constantly except for when eating. Went out to eat Monday night . This is where we think we both were exposed to Covid. Wife Symptoms started Wednesday. no symptoms for me then. We did our pre flight PCR test Friday. We were both negative. I thought my wife had caught something was because we were in the mountains in minus 7c during  a snow storm.. Couple of hours before we landed in Bangkok my  throat felt scratchy. But that was it. Tested positive the next day. Sitting in a Hospital spending the first of 10 days. My advice to anyone is dont take your mask off when people are there with you sitting very close to you. Eat alone , order out but dont fall for this BS that its ok to take your mask off when you eat especially indoors. Also Boosters WILL NOT SPOP omicron. We were at the highest level of antibodies and still got Covid. Still get the booster to keep your level up so it can fight this infection. My scratchy throat lasted 2 days but I think if We were not vaccinated , it would be a different story. I am 64 and doing fine. My wife is much better and 40. Be safe out there. Thailand would be smart to wait before opening and any Government official that says they have Omicron under control is a liar. This strain evades all vaccines

Why should he?  Many people have minor or no symptoms at all.

He doesn't really need to disclose it to anyone unless he is hanging around very old people with some late stage illness.

I've informed The International Association of Nosophobics.  They were very sympathetic.

So every time you cough,  sneeze or feel under the weather I am sure you will rush to the nearest hospital and get tested. Every other day

Infection number are not important at all. the amount of people getting real sick and need to got to a hospital are. There are less than 600 people in Thailand with a serious problem.

I really dont think so many are waiting on a decision.

They have all heard so many decisions that they are sick of it.

Omicron peaks very quickly and subsides quickly.

South Africa and globally.

It has sweep through Pattaya already even though the Thai authorities are cooking the testing books.

I'm thinking I would do the same thing! Can I just ask your general age bracket?
