Drinking on a Buddhist Holiday

Featured Replies

Although nowhere will (officially) sell booze today, there are places I know I can buy it of course.

Besides the risk of getting nicked, are the locals generally cool with farangs having a beer on their holy day?

  • No one cares. You're not Buddhist, and many of them enjoy and deserve a few on a day off.

before i found it so stupid that i cannot buy a beer because im not a buddhist but now its not bothering me. I also find it very selfish when someone says 'there is no problem, of course you can drink it'. I believe we are living here and that means we chose to live here again that means you should accept things in here, like it or not. I dont understand why many farangs trying to change things around. This is not your kingdom..

So again a friendly advice, just dont drink 1 day. If you really dying for a drink why dont you drin at home front of TV?!

Again in a couple of days. The saying (in English ) is COULDN'T care less.

Ah, yes, but the saying (in American) ....

"Definition of 'couldn't care less could care less'

couldn't care less could care less

or could care less

PHRASE

If you say that you couldn't care less about someone or something, you are emphasizing that you are not interested in them or worried about them. In American English, you can also say that you could care less, with the same meaning."

Next time, think before posting ... just a suggestion. ????

You are the enlightened one.

It takes time to reach this level of understanding.

True that language is decided by what people say, rather than what grammarians think.

But "could care less" is nonsensical.

Buddhist Holiday.

I think the Thai's are just Buddhist in name only.

The booze ban is just one more control measure over people.

and the people don't care for it any way.

Cheers.

1)  The places I know that sell alcohol on banned days are mainly selling to Thais.

2)  Thai freinds ask me to drink with them.

Plenty of Thais get drunk on these stupid no alcohol days.

They don't worry so why should you?

I did think before posting, as ths incorrect phrase had been used a couple of times this week.

According to this dictionary you quoted, 'couldn't care less' means the same as 'could care less'. What a load of rubbish. The former means that you are at your lowest level of caring, the other does not.

I never think of American English (?) before posting, and couldn't care less if no one did.   LOL

The middle path?

Don't purchase it on the observation day.

Don't drink in public on the observation day.

Feel free to drink at home any day.

Good to hear.

I don't drink a lot but three days without (which isn't unusual) and I'm gagging for one..

It's not so much the alcohol, I just like pubs and bars.

Wow enlightened when you don't drink. I guess I been enlightened for a long time then.

I think its good enough if you don't let alcohol rule your life. No harm in some alcohol problems start when you can't live without it.

There are many things like exercise that are great for the brain and body, eating relatively healthy stuff like that but most people can't be bothered. Does not make them any less they just live their live differently. As long as they don't moan when they suffer the consequences then i think they are great people.

The worst people are those that stopped drinking, smoking or started sports fanatically and now think they are superior or that everyone should do as they do as they see the light. You see it with new religious conversions too.

Just let people live their live and if they don't bring others down with them. Great their choice their life.

None of us are 'trying to change things around', as you put it. We just talk about how silly and pointless the rules are. You know and I know and so does every foreigner know that we can't change anything. Doesn't mean we can't complain about stupid and hypocrisy.

So I think it is more that we question stupid rules. Thais have been taught from a very early age to obey without question, so they do. It's deeply ingrained. Then we come along and ask why do people bow to Buddhist belief that alcohol should not be consumed, but only on a few days of the year. Other days, no problem. If drinking alcohol is a Buddhist no-no on the 16th, why is it okay on the 15th and 17th? Of course it makes no sense and stinks of religious hypocrisy.

No-alcohol days are also pointless as it's yet another unenforceable law, something that is so much a fixture of Thailand. All it does is stop large stores selling on one day and deny certain businesses a day of trade. All to no real purpose.

Went to my local yesterday for a couple of Leo s, no problems as usual and one or two Thais popped in for a swig as well.

I believe this is a one day holiday. If a person can’t be without  drinking alcohol for one day or even a few days.  They might have a problem then.

I have a thing called a refrigerator I put all sorts of foodstuffs in it to keep cold. It really comes in handy to chill beer in and enjoy whenever I want lol ????
