Banglamung/Pattaya – A foreign bicycle rider, believed to be a local ex-pat, has been pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a pickup truck driver in the Banglamung area this morning.

Police and emergency responders were notified of the accident on Number 331 Road (Sattahip – Korat) in the Huayyai sub-district before noon today (February 21st).

Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the foreign man lying unconscious on the road. He was later, despite the best efforts of first responders, pronounced dead at the scene. His heavily damaged bicycle was lying nearby and was later taken as evidence by Banglamung police.

The foreign man, who appeared to be in his late 60’s or early 70’s, was not fully identified by law enforcement, only releasing partial information. However, The Pattaya News is witholding his name pending embassy and family notification.

  • Has it already been confirmed the pickup driver was at fault ? Or is that a given because a farang/foreigner would never  be at fault ?

Cycling in groups has got to be less risk, Pickups more likely to see

Worrying... I know a few guys who cycle around .

Cycling has become more popular and I often see  groups of Thais on bikes out for a ride, well I did on the Railway Line Bypass, until they turned it into a construction and assault course. Even farang families... once saw 2 adults and their very young kids each on bikes coming down Sukhumvit and thinking I would not do that.

Just too much danger on regular roads.

I ride every morning starting around 05:00, lights front and back to make sure I can be seen.

Most crossroads at that time are quiet with traffic lights favouring the primary direction flashing amber with flashing red lights for the secondary... I always cross with caution as early morning pick-ups with deliveries to make to the local markets never slow down for them or give-way even if they see me.

Pick-ups will over-take a line of cyclists forcing them into the near-side.

Having a near run down experience in an inner soi mooban of CM apart from Russian roulette cycling is just about the most dangerous thing you can do here in the land of danger ????Rip

When I moved from Bangkok to a MooBaan in Nonthaburi, I bought a nice sturdy Adult Trycycle with big shopping baskets so I could traverse the local roads and at least get some produce and small grocery items from nearby shops because I did not have a car yet. Went out one time...almost forced into a ditch adjoining a rice field by a massive horn blaring truck (barely able to fit on our narrow road here)...made it home and never took it out again. Bought a car instead....another  form of danger but at least it has 6 airbags...

It was why when I bought my bike, I also would only ride around the park or drive out to Suvarnabhumi from the house and ride around the perimeter.  I would never attempt to ride around town.  RIP to the individual and hopefully the driver who hit and killed him is prosecuted fully.

Without knowing the full facts of the incident?

The driver was later identified as Mr. Samreang Unan, age not given. He told police, “I was in the right lane. There was a truck in the left lane. The bicycle rider changed his own direction suddenly and I was unable to avoid the collision.”

So, was the cyclist trying to avoid a threatening behind truck too ? I can't see a cyclist swerving out into the right lane with a truck behind him

Pure speculation. Did you read the associated article? Sounds like the bike rider may well have not been paying attention to the traffic.

I remember a pickup driving off the road on to a hard shoulder in Thailand killing two foreigners cycling. The reason was I dropped my hat and bent down to pick it up.

My wife and I were too close to a pick up truck last year when out cycling. Heard it's engine screaming and it came flying out of a side road straight onto Sukhumvit Rd where we were cycling, missed everything amazingly and got stuck in the ditch in the central reservation opposite the Navy base near Bang Saray. God knows what he was doing, full revs low gear not braking, on drugs or drunk perhaps but early morning.

The standard of driving here in Thailand is simply appalling and nothing ever changes. How many Thais would pass a driving test in Europe or North America.

RIP to the unfortunate cyclist.

Absolutely....I am terrified every time I take the car out. I had a moto taxi guy blast his horn and make threatening gestures to me just yesterday as I was driving on the roadway and he thought he had the right of way pulling out in front me me from a parked position. I was about to turn left into Big-C (with my signal on of course) but he had to get out in front of me .....<deleted> idiots.

Assumptions ... always the Thai's fault ...

... maybe the cyclist was at fault, it happens.

Yet the driver has made a statement, and it only indicates that the rider changed his direction, not a speed of the driver that hit him nor how far ahead the bicycle rider was ahead when he changed direction, which my supposition would say was into the lane completely.  31 years as a Traffic investigator lends to my supposition.  I would want to see where the damage on the truck that hit him was located.  Impact damage tells a pretty good story, from looking at the bicycle it was a horrific impact. From the picture it looks to be a direct rear impact that folded the bike up.

From the article

"The driver was later identified as Mr. Samreang Unan, age not given. He told police, “I was in the right lane. There was a truck in the left lane. The bicycle rider changed his own direction suddenly and I was unable to avoid the collision.”

A fairly safe one to make.

I think one is supposed to concentrate when on the roads. It is the relaxing that causes accidents.

Eh? My take on reading this was pickup driver was overtaking the truck in right side lane of road and did a head on with cyclist going other way.

Correct. The simple fact is there are way too many morons on these roads who are not capable or qualified to be driving a road vehicle. They wouldn't last 5 minutes on roads in my country. They'd get nicked by the police, who actually do police work and enforce the law, or beaten up in a road rage incident for driving like a retard,

A correct assumption to make considering the standard of driving here.

Maybe. They'll also fall like skittles if the driver is drunk or speeding.

They're always swerving out to avoid the smallest of pot holes, debris etc.

Have you ever seen a bicycle with rear view mirrors? Riders usually just move their heads 45 degrees when overtaking or swerving as though they're just using their peripheral vision to see what's behind them.
