Karon –A Swedish man was arrested after he was found allegedly working at a bar in Karon.

The Karon Police told the Phuket Express that on Wednesday (March 6th) at 5:00 P.M. they and the Phuket Immigration arrested a suspect identified only as MR. STEN, 57, a Swedish national. He was arrested at a bar on the Tai Na Road in Karon.

The arrest follows Phuket Immigration cracking down on illegally working foreigners in Phuket. The Swedish man was found allegedly recommending beverages to customers at the bar.

He was unable to prevent a legal work permit and was taken to the Karon Police Station to face charges of working without permission.

What's the penalty for working without permission ?

The outdated laws of Thailand and the xenophobia will ruin the country... But they pretend aiming for tourists or better the money from the tourists...  Maybe a boycot by the tourists could things change in Thailand.. Expats and retirees are already avoiding to come here

What is outdated about the law? Working without a work permit is forbidden for good reasons.

Outdated laws that nobody can do anything that a Thai can't do.. And as Thailand pretend they can do everything it is almost impossible to get a workpermit. What happens is that people start to work without a permit. So amend this law. Only if it is work that Thais don't like to do they hire Burmese and no problem for that. Thailand needs to enter the 21st century\.

And why are so many Thais working illegally in other countries?? So here foreigners have to something that their own people doesn't do in other countries

knew of a Belgian guy in Pattaya who owned a popular bar, he fell out with his missis and she ended up with a Thai cop who obviously had intentions of becoming involved. one day they "caught" him talking to a customer,  the charge was "entertaining"

There has been a few mad things like that over the years here in Phuket, One farang guy who's wife had a travel shop and he had it advertised on his truck, he got stopped, another guy got stopped driving a mini van, not allowed said the police luckly for him he didnt have any passengers i the minivan, maybe he had just dropped them off at the airport, the list goes on.

Nothing outdated in the law. Guy probably thought the same as you that tourists could just start working.

Foreigners in the UK, just like Thailand, have to have the appropriate visa and get permission via an NI number before working.

Obviously you are in full agreement with the poster, most foreigners want things to suit them.

I don't think that tourists can work...and where did you read he is a tourist?? Besides how many backpackers are travelling around the world and can get small temporarily jobs before travveling further?? Once Thailand had these backpackers too and that was good for the economy as the money they earned was spend mostly here. The backpackers wanted to see the country, but no the army and the governments wanted them out...No wonder that tourism went down since than
