It is a general "rule" that vehicles made by European manufacturers have the indicater on the left but those from Japanese are on the right.   Do not think that varies by Country of manufacture, just Country of maker.

Generally found that vehicles manufactured in the East are on the right. We also have a Merc which is on the opposite side and to confuse things even more there is the usual Washers+cruise control+indicators on the steering wheel plus the gear select as there is no gear lever mounted  in the centre floor.

Fun when you try indicating and the wipers spring into action, then in an attempt to correct it you follow up by dropping  down a gear or worse still flicking it into park mode.

In UK, all UK spec cars have the indicator lever on the left side of the steering column. In Dubai, where cars are right hand drive, all UAE spec cars also have the indicator lever on the left hand side! As we know, most vehicles here in Thailand, where driving should be on the same side of the road as in UK, indicator levers or on the right side ????.

Can be either side in my experience.

We have vehicles in the US and here.....

No matter which way I go I hit the damn wiper switch a few times when signaling - so, don't ask me.....

I guess it make sense to put the indicator on a right hand drive vehicle on the RHS, but then the Brits have always had different ideas.

Perhaps it's because in the UK, the windscreen wipers get far more use than the turn indicators.

+1 This has been my experience driving left or right hand drive cars around the world.

When I put my intermittant wipers on, I always assume drivers know I will be making a left turn

Japanese ... are on the right...

Not true in North America. As someone said above, the Japanese makes put them next to the driver's window. I have a Toyota and an MG here in Chiang Mai. They're opposite each other. MG likes to think of themselves as a  European brand. My friend has an Opel with the signals on the left.

Coming from the US when I first starting driving here I was frequently turning on the windshield wipers when I meant to signal a turn.

Every vehicle I have seen here they are on the right side.

I think you’ll find it could be based on the make of vehicle, not what hand drive it is.

Right Chevy Colorado.

If all things were equal, the indicator stalk should be on the drivers window side. The reasoning being that drivers of manual gearbox cars can operate the indicator and still be able to change gear.  Hence most cars that are designed and built in a RHD country have their indicator stalks on the right whilst on LHD cars they are generally on the left.

However, motor manufacturers try to save money and usualy only make one switchgear set so for example, most European cars that are exported to the UK still have their indicator stalks on the left (because Europe is LHD) - even though we are RHD whereas it is normally the case that Japanese cars in the UK have their indicator on the right (because Japan is RHD) - that also being the correct side for the UK.

However, I believe that some Japanese manufacturers have started building LHD cars with the indicator on the left which has then overlapped onto the UK market because the rest of the car's spec is Euro.

When I spend my usual 2 weeks in Thailand I spend most of that time turning the wipers on by mistake. I've just about got used to it by the time I'm ready to go home where I spend the next 2 weeks doing the same in my UK car.????

No, it is imposed on us - see my previous post. If you go back to where we actually designed and built cars in the UK instead of being just an assembly plant for Europe, you will find that British cars have their stalks on the right.

turn indictors are an optional extra in Thailand. Most Thais don't go for that option apparently.
