What’s in a name? Tesco Lotus in Thailand rebrands to “Lotus’s” (no, really)

As it is written

Good idea, but sadly meaningless!

One cannot “pronounce as it is written’ since written English gives little guidance on pronunciation.

So ask once again: how do you, personally yourself alone, pronounce the following?

minute

brass

route

Bumrungrad

(My naughty screen reader started that last off with a slang word for my posterior and finished with a short-form word for a postgraduate (student).  But I use neither of those pronunciations.)

Yes, I get it, really funny! ????

I teach English here and have lived here for along time. Just saying final sounds of words are problematic for Thais. Lotus's is at the extreme end of difficult. Of course when one is using the possessive s and the proper noun ends in s there are two acceptable forms. Example: Jesus's and Jesus'. Both have the same sound and are difficult for second language learners. As is Lotus's. No Thai will say this.

Wrong. The CP Group bought-out Tesco Lotus in a controversial deal. It is CP renaming their acquisition not Tesco.

They could have rebranded Tesco Lotus as " Lotus C "

I will leave you to guess what the "C " stands for.

And in real English it would be 'Cor Blimey' not Well..........LOL

Is the plural of Lotus not Loti?   LOL

That's blatant declensionism, assuming it's second declension.

It could be third declension, in which case the plural would be Lotora (as in corpus/corpora), or even fourth declension, Lotūs (as in manus/manūs).

Not sure the intent behind "Lotus's"

As an English word it's grammatical nonsense.

If it is to be a possessive form, then "Lotus'. "

If to be plural and unique, then "Lotuses."

Given CP's vast commercial monopoly that eats competition, "Tesco Locust" makes more sense.

What is Sainsbury's and why are the grammar Nazis not protesting?

Old man Sainsbury long gone, replaced by a PLC board of directors.

Just think of it as a chain of shops owned by a pretty lady named Lotus.

According to OED, as Lotus is from Latin, the plural is Loti. But it can be Anglicised into Lotuses, unless you are referring to the car where the company has said that Lotus is their plural.

Have a good year Oxx.

And most folk in UK say they are going to Tesco'S anyway. But Lotus'S looks and sounds daft, to me.

Please explain what Nazis have to do with a person correcting someone else's grammar please.

They're the sort of people who would complain about starting a sentence with a conjunction. ????
