It has been confirmed for yet another year that Thai Massaman curry is the number one dish in the world.

 

In a 2021 updated list on CNN Travel online of the world's top 50 the Thai dish held onto its crown with CNN calling it the "king of curries", reported Manager.

 

The list was started in 2011 and Massaman has always been tops.

 

Rounding out the top five were #2 Neopolitan pizza, #3 Chocolate from Mexico, #4 Sushi from Japan and #5 Peking Duck from China. 

 

Tom Yum Goong made #8 with the judges calling it a "Thai masterpiece" that "best of all was cheap". 

 

The only other iconic Thai dish to make the top 50 was Som Tam or papaya salad at #46. 

 

The UK's widely regarded "National Dish" of Fish and Chips made #33 while their Buttered Toast with Marmite was #42. UK potato chips (that they call crisps) sneaked in at #48.

 

For the US donuts made #14, ketchup #39 and buttered popcorn #50.

 

France - considered by many to be the home of "haute cuisine" - could only manage #21 for croissants. 

 

Italy got #31 for Parma ham, while the Canadians can celebrate Maple Syrup at #34 and the Australians were named as #37 for Chicken Parm. 

 

Germany was credited with the Hamburger at #6.

Although I do like a good Massaman every so often, I call this complete Hogwash. If this is decided on what the general public popularity of sales being fresh in restaurants and frozen ready meals, then so far from the truth.

Massaman curry with a side portions of chippy chips. No you're talking.

 

Also Massaman curry in a pie as an alternative to the already excellent chicken balti  pie would be good. 

 

Can someone sort  it,  thanks.

I was right and CNN  does stand for Cable Numb Nuts

It is a rehash of a 2011 article. 

 

There is hope? Pizza came second and Rendang came 7th.

Never underrstood this?

 

Massman curry probably doesn't even break the top 10 within Thailand?

Aka mole sauce. I've had this, only at proper Mexican restaurants, with turkey, chicken, stewed dishes and enchiladas. Never seen it with fish. Actually pretty nice.

From my understanding massaman is not even Thai, its Indonesian (Muslim).

 

Ketchup (tomato sauce really) and donuts is something to be culturally proud of lol.

Some people like a burger with their ketchup....

As for fish n chips and marmite that's a very distant memory.

I can recall the  smell of the salt and vinegar on hot chips from the chip shop right now.

Massaman curry is not prevalent in Thailand so how can it be number one? It is only cooked in specialty shops.

 

The bland sushi is #4? What type of survey is this?

Is the BTS office canteen "speciality"? Had a very passable massaman there yesterday.

Massaman is originally a Muslim dish and we know most Thai are Buddhists. I won't call it a 'Thai dish'.
