Thailand’s prime minister asked to reconsider another national lockdown

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha / AFP

A group of Thai medical professionals has issued a statement, asking the country’s prime minster to reconsider locking down the country again as a matter of urgency, citing the rapid spread of the latest wave of COVID-19 infections and fears that the medical system will collapse.

The statement also criticizes the government’s management ability, saying the 1668 hotline, which is supposed to help find beds for COVID-19 patients, is an indicator that management is failing. It also said that people do not have equal access to treatment, and some are paying for that with their lives.

The group also recommends that the government lift the mandate requiring any hospital detecting a new case to admit the patient. It said the order is impractical, resulting in too many people waiting for beds.

Too late for a lockdown, the virus is everywhere, due to the stupidity of people travelling for songkran, and Prayuts mob for allowing it to happen.

You know the wheels are starting to come off when you get burgeoning criticism from the Doctors and medical staff at the pointy end...

Multiple different news reports from medics stating that people are dying and the system is failing, unfortunately I fear things are gonna get much worse

Oh it's coming regardless of what he wants to do.

The rumor du jour is that the government is going to extend quarantine for all incoming Farangs to 14 days again. There is a Reuters report that claims its a done deal. No fun.

One might think that with a "lockdown" they might just shut down incoming disease infested foreigners altogether ...

Cheer up some boxes with vaccines probably coming in November/December.

While the country being locked down is imminent, the clowns running this debacle should be locked up!

Ridiculous.  No testing wouldn't stop the sick from filling up the hospitals.  Jeez.

Yeah, won't be happening.

He will just say again that it is all under control and there will be no need for a lockdown. His smiley face plan is at work at bringing happiness back to the people.

Your absolutely right, it would just stop the asymptomatics from filling the beds.

Our school is scheduled to restart new year 12 May, I'm guessing that won't happen and we'll be back to online for our kids.

I think we have passed that stage now.

People dying and requiring ICU and ventilator care is much harder to ignore.

And wouldn't stop the asymptomatic from spreading the virus around even more, helping to fill even more hospital beds.

All in all, Thailand has done OK with regards to the virus.  Just screwed up big time with this Songkran debacle.

Did anyone read that people are not getting equal access to health care and are dying because of it?

Not surprising.

Agree with closing borders but Thailand now has more cases per day than many others.  The UK had less yesterday and Burma far less so it is not the foreigners that are disease infested anymore.

Thailand became too complacent by opening up  entertainment venues and travelling during extended Songkran holidays. Lockdown is imminent and every effort should be made to expedite  vaccination entire population starting with most vulnerable and health workers not young in tourist Islands.

I will be vaccined today in home country no lockdowns and life back to normal. I've been waiting for a window to go back to Thailand but even vaccinated why would I an expat or any tourist want to fly into a country with so much chaos.

No thanks Im happy right were I am for the near future.

The virus can't be stopped with silly lockdowns. Health authorities can manage the situation better by ceasing all asymptomatic testing, treating patients before they are admitted with cheap, widely available repurposed drugs like Ivermectin, and protecting older people and unhealthy people.

And still you do not get the fact that asymptomatic people spread the virus causing the disease, and why all should be tested if they have had contact with a person who was tested and found positive.  Yes testing those that show symptoms is needed but so is testing those not showing symptoms.  I am at a loss for words on your response.
