Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha remains non-committal on the proposal to lockdown Bangkok for seven days, to contain the ongoing spread of COVID-19, saying that he has to consider the issue very carefully and hear the opinions of all stakeholders, including people in the capital, about the impacts from such drastic action.

“How can we be sure that, after the lockdown, it will be over? If it is not, what should we do? I think that, if we get hurt but it will be over, then we should do it but, if we get hurt and it does not work, then we should explore other means,” said the prime minister, as he advised everyone in Bangkok to consider it their duty to look after themselves.

He also made clear that he will not seek tougher laws to contain the spread of the virus, noting that the current law is enough, but there are still people who defy it, apparently alluding to the various political groups which staged protests on Thursday in the capital.

Unsure and non-commital.

A good positive stance to deal with the current crisis-not!

Kind of underlines his unsuitability does that .. Politicians have to make decisions that by and large are to benefit the population however unpopular they might be in making those choices .. he did not think twice about opinions of all stakeholders or everyone living in BKK in overthrowing a legitimately elected Gov' 7 years ago but now leans it that as an excuse .. this will not end well as they are clearly pulling in different directions while the contradictions and misleading info is going off the scale ..

Just the rumour of a lockdown will create a mass exodus of the infected back to their villages and thus spreading it even more.

The PM should have either said NO lockdown for some time or declared an instant lockdown.

Although I agree with your point in general, Western politicians didn't exactly do great on this front for most of the pandemic either.

21 day lock down will stall things 21 days.

120 day lock down will stall things 120 days.

It is a virus loose in the general population of the world and will run its course until enough are exposed naturally or by vaccine as has every virus or disease has since the evolution of humanity.

Well, they have closed construction camps for a month... where will the labourers go? Out to buy food, or to home provinces? They will still live and breathe for the month, and are maybe even more likely to spread Covid without work.

Unsure about anything that doesn't shoot something he is a national disgrace ????

I really think that it's time that they bit the bullet, lockdown for at least a month, get the vaccination teams mobile and start jabbing everyone ASAP, harsh & unpopular I know but at this moment in time we are fighting a losing battle, I don't feel comfortable with my other half having to run the gauntlet every time she goes shopping, and it's also not good that we expats are no where near vaccination, diabolical shambles to be honest.

Nice thought, but it will be months, maybe years before they have enough doses.  They can't lock down that long without starvation and destitution.

I agree whole heartedly with what you say and your assessment of the situation, but what they are doing now is about as much good as a chocolate teapot, something drastic has to be done and the sooner the better, these clowns have no idea of what they are doing full stop.

What happened to all the AstraZeneca jabs that they were so confident were arriving? The Thai people have been very badly let down by those currently in power, the same can be said for expats, there many on this forum that fall into the vulnerable category, and probably a lot more Thais. I  seriously hope that at some point in the not too distant future we will have been vaccinated so do not risk being seriously ill or even fatefully infected.

Of course I'll be classed as bonkers, and derided but this is now beyond a joke.

This is an interesting possibility.. Why I'm looking to possibly leave in a few years. I too think they will never get a handle on it It's not the virus but the facism I fear.

Maybe it's part of the plan. Jus sayin

Of course if you vaccinated your population; problem what problem. However as that is an ongoing chucklehuck. Sad because unlike other countries Thailand had so much time to get things right, but in the end they didn't.

Lockdowns aren't a panacea. If you're infected you'll definitely infect the people you're locked down with.

This was an unpresidented situation "last year" - here we are 18 months down the line with all the discovery that has gone on and yet - The Thai government is pretty much ignoring all of it - they really don't have to do much as it has all been done for them and yet - we will do it our way

They are playing with peoples lives including mine with thier astounding failures

very simplistic view - I would agree if this was 1890 but that is not were we are - in the past plagues (pandemics) have killed millions upon millions of people - thanks to science we have moved up a step from that but it is still not easy to implement solutions that take time to develope - Thailand current governemt dropped the ball on this for numerous reasons but they are not correcting it even when faced with colossal failure - they will be counted

If you're going to do a lockdown, do it right.....

Go for eight days.

  • Popular Post

7 days would stop Covid as mush as Custer stopped the Indians at Little Big Horn.

You'd need to basically lockdown for 28 days minimum. 14 to see if people had it, and then another 14 to cover those infected by those infected in the same house during lockdown

Now there’s a good idea !

This doofus should have had a one month lockdown about 3 months ago and it will of all gone away again. But he didn't.

It's obvious he's not running the show.

Western countries were in high gear a year or year and a half ago to get effective vaccines, ramp up production and roll it out. They've been jabbing like crazy for 6 months.  Thailand? Sigh.

If we only had more vaccines! Now let me see ,which countries didn't donate vaccines?

Yes, he obviously wasn't alluding to members of his own government playing around in Thonglor.
