Thailand on Monday (July 26) reported 15,376 new COVID-19 cases and 87 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

● 14,335 new infections

● 1041 prison / prison infections

Monday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 512,678 with 4,146 deaths.

(Total infections since April 1: 483,815)

The news comes as Zuellig Pharma, the sole distributor of Moderna vaccine in Thailand, has informed the Thai Red Cross Society (TRCS) that the company has already notified the manufacturer of the order for an additional five million doses, to be delivered next year.

Thailand on Monday reported another record high of 15,376 new COVID cases along with 87 deaths for the past day, the second straight day of 15,000+ cases and surpassing 500,000 total cases for the first time. Monday’s daily cases count set Thailand’s fifth record high in the past seven days.

Monday’s 15,376 new cases mark edged past the prior record 15,335 case total set on Sunday, as daily cases in Thailand have rocketed upward from the 11,000+ range just a week ago. Monday’s 87 deaths total marked a decline from the 129 deaths recorded on Sunday and was the first daily total below 100 in the past four days.

Monday’s new case count included 14,335 among the general public and 1,041 from Thailand’s prisons. Thailand has now totaled 512,678 COVID cases and 4,146 COVID deaths since the start of the pandemic in January 2020, though most of those have occurred just since this April.

Now in the worst of a so-called third wave that began in April, Thailand’s COVID outbreak has spread lately from its original center in Bangkok and several adjoining provinces to the entire nation. All or almost all of Thailand’s 77 provinces lately have been reporting new COVID cases on a daily basis.

Health experts said the rising COVID case and death tolls in Thailand have been driven by the highly contagious Delta (India) variant of the coronavirus that’s now become dominant in the country. Its toll has been worsened by Thailand’s lagging COVID vaccination program that has only fully vaccinated about 5 percent of the population after months of effort, partly due to limited supplies of government procured vaccines.

The country’s health care system has been hit to the breaking point by the broadening pandemic. Thailand on Monday again reported new record highs for active COVID cases hospitalized (167,057), the share of those in critical condition (4,289), and the share of critical patients on ventilators (967).

Total COVID hospitalizations have almost doubled in the past two weeks, and the share of those in critical condition has doubled in the past month. As of Monday, Thailand's tally of critical condition COVID patients had risen to new daily records for the past 37 days in a row.

In other developments:

--38 of Thailand’s 77 provinces on Sunday reported more than 100 new COVID cases for the day, and Samut Prakan (with 1,056 new cases) became the third Thai province, after Bangkok and Samut Sakhon, to report more than 1,000 new cases in a day.

--COVID vaccination online registration opportunities continue to be available to foreign nationals age 60 and above who live in Bangkok and five adjoining provinces at the Central Vaccination Center, Bang Sue Grand Station in Bangkok. Those age 75 and above are eligible for limited walk-in vaccinations daily. For details, see https://www.thailandintervac.com/

--Bangkok province’s new case count of 2,700 on Sunday marked the second consecutive day of decline and remained below the province daily high of 3,191 cases earlier in July. However, the province, with 66 new deaths on Sunday, now has passed the 2,000 deaths mark with 2,095 total.

Earlier I was shown a graphic sheet that indicated todays numbers were 20,776 cases with 100 deaths.  I wonder what happened to that graphic and why the numbers now are lower, the graph I saw was at 6:45 am this morning.  One has to wonder if they removed it and adjusted the numbers accordingly and if the graphic I saw was including the 3k+ cases from the Phetchabun chicken factory.  Now I wish I has taken a screenshot of that graphic. I now wonder if it was a faked graphic.

Those numbers looks similar to the graphic I saw earlier, without the top column, and the calendar sides, so someone must have used those numbers and created a fake graphic for all of Thailand.  I apologize as I now see where it possibly came from.

The numbers in the Graphic I saw @smedly appear to have come from the Chonburi graphic above, with columns removed by someone.  I need to do a better job of reviewing the actual graphic to ensure it is not a fabrication.

I didn't see that kind of graphic. But, I was wondering about today's total, in that it presumably includes few if any of the Phetchabun chicken plant cases reported over the weekend. One of these days soon, I'd presume, there's going to be a big spike for a day or two as those cases get rolled into the national totals.

The Thai National Taekwondo Team will arrive at Phuket International Airport at 09:25am by Singapore Airlines. They will be tested for COVID-19 before transferring to their hotel. They have to then stay on the island for at least 14 nights

I wish I had taken a screen shot of it and kept it, my bad for not doing it.  After looking at the Chonburi Graphic I see the number I stated earlier in different spots and definitely someone created that graphic and now it has been removed.  On the other topic, I do not see the Phetchabun Factor numbers yet added and one wonders if they will be or if they will just be lost somewhere.  If you look at the totals for that province, they are well shy of the numbers spilled out yesterday.

I can’t read the Thai. Is there any info on what the last five years average deaths were for May and June?

I’m trying to work out what the 12% and 17.5% might represent as an absolute number. So then I can compare it to the actual number of Covid deaths reported in May and June.

Cumulatively they have announced 50 million Moderna for next year. Trouble is it’s the same 5 mil 10 times.

If this trend continues, they will announce the intent to consider entering into negotiations to buy a gazillion doses in 2025.

Yes it will be very interesting to see Phetchabun case figures reported today.

Went there yesterday. Went pretty smoothly and took just over an hour and that includes the compulsory 30 minutes you have have to wait before you can leave. It was AZ but I forgot to ask if it was home grown or from the donation from Japan. Nurses aspirated the syringe before plunging. There were alot of people but I wouldn't call it overly crowded or choatic as it was spread over quite a large area and ran pretty well. Bit of a headache today (may not be juice related), a bit more tired than usual and my arm ached a little bit when I woke up during the night but nothing really.

On another point a local 200 bed field hosptital is in chaos I have been told. Entire families turning up but it's full as is the local hospital. The system is about to burst.

The figures seem to vary quite a bit

December 2020 13%

January 2021 8%

February - 1%

March 17%

April 2%

May 12%

June 18%

If Thailand has say 40,000 normal deaths a month this "excess" equates to about 27,600 in 7 months !

One might surmise that the bubble and seal until herd immunity method of containing the pandemic is the preferred option for the whole country.Good to see the numbers have stabilised.

I would like to see daily statistic to include how many needed hospitalisation and how many were only positive without any symptoms

On a population adjusted basis,  Chonburi appears to have around 30% more cases than Bangkok.  Would be nice if we had even one facility where ALL our "elderly" residents could get a jab.
