Foreigner criticized after taxi attack over 10 baht - claimed driver took a detour

PPTV 36 reported with a video on an incident in downtown Bangkok after a taxi driver allegedly attacked a foreigner over 10 baht.

The foreigner - a long term resident of Thailand who could speak Thai according to a witness - only paid 40 baht for a trip from Ekkamai to Phrakhanong.

He walked off owing the taxi driver 10 baht more and a violent confrontation ensued as the driver chased him.

The foreigner claimed the driver had gone the long way round.

On a video people called for security to intervene.

The foreigner reported the alleged attack to Phrakhanong police who are investigating and refused to comment on the case.

A "win" or motorcycle taxi driver told the media that the foreigner had been staying at a hotel for dozens of years and could speak Thai.

But people did not like him because of his rude behavior and often refused him service.

What did it say on the meter? If a mocy taxi they have unidentified fare boundaries which he should have known,  if he is a long term resident.

What a cheapskate? And then had the temerity to report the aggrieved party to the police. Scum?

So he can speak the lingo meaning he has been here for quite a while and he STILL think it's a good idea to start an argument over 10 baht? he may speak the language but he learned nothing of living and assimilating in this country and to let go when letting go is the best thing to do...

Some people are just incredibly stupid and cheap. They seem to think they are superior and can do as they please. 10bt is nothing not worth the trouble. What the taxi driver did was wrong but foreigners like that will be in trouble when given enough time.

I seen guys like that too think they know best think everything is a scam and the Thais are the enemies. Utterly useless people still violence is a step too far. But its almost unavoidable if you behave like that.

Yes, I've sees this many times over the years. If someone is ripping me off I tend to make a noise, pay them if it's not overly high and then don't use them again. If I get a fair bill and what I ordered that's where the tips come in.

I'm known to be quite a generous tipper by everyone who deals with me on a regular basis and believe me, this policy always more than pays off in the long run.

I've been doing this for decades even though I come from the UK where tipping is not (or wasn't) generally much of a thing - this policy works well everywhere.

I don't go over the top, to me it's pocket change but I know it makes a difference to service people.

When I order something online from a local store, even something like a sandwich, the delivery people all know me well, I'm the guy who buys them a cheap lunch for good service - and surprisingly enough I always get good service - they tend to go the extra mile when I place an order.

If someone rips me off and its not overly high then yes like you i let them know i caught on or whatever but am not going into discussion or anger. If its a lot 1000's then i would stand my ground.

I tip good too but with the grab app its a bit hard to get the same driver all the time. But really those overly aggressive superior foreigners that make a problem over 10 baht are bound to get in trouble with the wrong crowd.

Someone i know claimed he always got aggressive with the police and that made them back off not fine him. I find it hard to believe especially given how criminal some police can be.

Taxi drivers often know the quickest way to go , rather than the shortest way to go , like avoiding traffic lights and traffic jams

What about the taxi driver - using violence for the sake of 10 baht. How stupid and cheap is that?

It's hard to say who's right and who's wrong as we where not there. But if it was over 10 baht their both wrong.

Just pay the price next time.

Maybe 10 baht was the the straw that broke the camel's back. May have been at the back end of a day that kept going wrong for him. Under normal circumstances you wouldn't think he'd bother with all the rigmarole.

Farang? The guy looks more like a malaysian. Fyi thais aren’t known for being decent tippers themselves.

What was the agreed price ?

Was it a metered taxi ?

Did the meter show 50 Baht and the passenger gave himself a discount ?

Whatever way , 50 Baht is very cheap for a Taxi , 40 Baht is extremely  cheap

If ekamai to pra khanong BTS why not just walk. It's like 5-10 min walk. But depending where in pra khanong impossible could be only 40 baht as the starting price is 35. I could see around 40 baht just from BTS to BTS on sukumvit because of traffic. If it really is BTS to BTS then the real problem is the forienger is too lazy to spend a few mins walking. Unfortunately we don't know where in ekamai picked up and where in pra khanong dropped off at. But 50 baht dose not sound unreasonable for that area for that distance based on traffic.

Same here, I usually tip even if going short distance on motorcy or regular taxi. Has beeen repaid as I have been waiting sometime in the rain and taxi has pulled over for me without me waving them down and with Thai standing around me becuase they recognise me as the guy who always give them a tip. Even in resturant, cashier and waitress know I tip so when they had lockdown and had to call for take out had a waitrees in Foodland follow me into their supurmarket and said if you want something Tony just tell me and we will bring it over to  you when you finish shopping.

Maybe you should have read the last sentence of my first post better. But in general most farangs are better of financially then Thai taxi drivers. Especially around this time with lockdowns.

Yes I have often found you reap what you sow both negative and positive.

That foreigner is probably a cheapskate retiree , giving 10 baht less and risking injuries is a no-no.

We don't know in the case in question, if he was being ripped off or was just being a jerk.

I used to walk from Ekamai bus station to Phra Kanong quiet often. I liked to pick out some vehicle in traffic and see if I'd beat them to Soi 71...

If faced with a bit of overcharge, try a little humor. "Oh, you already put in the tip: 10 baht. Gee, I was going to give you 20, but I guess it was up to you."

The exchange rate and average salary in western countries is several times higher than the people in Thailand.

10 baht to Americans is only 0.30 cents US, it's like nothing but to a Thai, it can bring in food to their family.

At the end of my Soi is a win taxi station, around 5-6 guys and one lady rider.

They've been there for a long time and I know them well.

A quick trip to the local Big C is a 40 baht charge, one new guy wants 50 baht.

The first time he asked for that I gave him 50 baht... now if he's next in-line I just refuse to go with him and wait for the next turn.

Easy.

Wow ... bet you that investigation would cost more than 10baht ...lol !

Many I know who speak Thai are the tightest. A lot of them think everything should be 30-40 thb and survive on food carts.
